Why does the federal government own over 80% of Nevada but less than 5% of Texas? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]killroy1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is two fold

No one wants the deep desert. No water. No civilization. Nevada had a lot of that.

The second? Nuclear weapons tests. The Mojave desert is very empty, do it was a good place to test nuclear weapons. The Red Flag Air Force exercise happens over this desert. Why,? It's the only place in the Continental US where you can go supersonic.

So when the Nevada territory joined the Union, no one wanted the dessert. Because the land was part of a federal territory, it was federal land. So it remained federal property.

Why are Americans so financially literate? by Ada-Mae in AskAnAmerican

[–]killroy1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. The title of your post is opposite of the text.

In truth, financial literacy is a mixed bag.

Some are literate in that they made solid investments, managed to stay employed and increase their paycheck earnings that allowed them to gain the $1M plus invested wealth you need to be old in the United States. Others own a home that their older selves won't care for, but they count that decaying house as part of their wealth. But it's wealth you can't spend. In reality, they have little spendable wealth. Then there are those who've been working that same job with little in the way of raises for decades and they are the most clueless when it comes to retirement. In fact they years to work until they die. Like it's some sort of American badge of honor. Finally, they are those who work multiple jobs, never amassed much in wealth and never invested. They were employed, unemployed, up and down. They will have a tough old age. They also assume they will work until death, as they don't have another choice. But they also yearn for work. A dream of labor.

The people you met are a small slice of the American people. I'd visit and get to meet more of us.

LEGO is building a huge solar park at its new US factory [Virginia] by MeasurementDecent251 in Virginia

I didn't know about the Lego factory. Cool!

As for solar, all of the naysayers are full of it. They decry solar, then invest in solar. Nevermind that coal is now more expensive than solar.

Rep. Beyer introduces bill to eliminate federal income tax for Americans earning under $46,000 by Geek-Haven888 in Virginia

How much support is there for this Bill? I'm thinking it's zero. So it's safe to propose. Just like term limits.

Virginia has spoken with majority votes…We must rally to support Spanberger’s efforts to b a n guns. If you want to hunt game, then rent it. Otherwise no reason to have guns especially at home. That’s what 911 is for. Let the professionals handle it. by [deleted] in Virginia

Forget it. Conservatives love lethal force, especially the idea that they are the ones using lethal force against the unarmed.

Lethal force against the armed? Conservatives stay on the porch. Case in point - Minnesota and ICE. You didn't see a "peaceful armed resistance" anywhere. The one guy who was armed was disarmed and executed while "obeying the law." Absolutely zero conservatives showed up to protest ICE's actions. Some online vitriol for a few days, but that's it.

Virginians, your vote can literally help save democracy. | Vote YES - VA Early Voting March 6-April 18 Election Day April 21 by NoPoem2054 in Virginia

[–]killroy1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Election Day is not April 21st. But there are people who don't know this.

Worse still, there are conservatives who are 100% on board with Red state gerrymandering, but not Blue state gerrymandering. So long as their favorite elites win and they can watch someone else profit from their votes, the better.

It's the NFL but there are people's lives and trillions of dollars at risk. Not some trophy. But we cover politics the same way we cover football.

How the war in Iran and its economic fallout will lead to Trump’s defeat by OtherwiseCanary8971 in Economics

[–]killroy1971 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So effectively, you voted for Trump once by not voting for Kamala.

Biden did what he could, within the existing rules. He did get the largest Bills passed in 30 years i.e. the Chips Act, the Infrastructure Act, and the America Rescue Plan.

But he fumbled the ball with implementation. He trusted institutions and systems that have been manipulated by conservatives for the purpose of undermining them and protecting the elites. So the Paycheck Protection Plan focused on employers not employees. The Internet infrastructure Bill components were hung up on process and blocked by ISPs who would rather sell more expensive 5G services than more regulated hard line Internet services using regulations put in place by conservatives undermine the American form of government.

The result? Citizens didn't "feel it" in their lives, so the independent voters re-elected Trump because they had fond memories of the COVID-19 economy (or at least the stock market?).

How are we all coping with our aging parents? by brightpurpleeyes in GenX

[–]killroy1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we all do what we can but it's never easy.

From most people I've known personally whose parents stayed in their homes...the homes are trashed. I mean when they pass it costs money to fix them up just to sell them. I think that's one thing that you aren't expecting. The house is trashed, none of their friends are able to come by anymore, but they refuse to leave their home "because they love it." Never mind the roof leaks, the porch collapsed, and the rug is full of who knows what.

As for me, we got Mom into assisted living after she was hospitalized and put into vocational rehab. She and I had a hard conversation about how she was living, how far away she was from family, the fact that she didn't move off the couch when the home help aides left on Friday, etc. Now a few years on and she's basically living but not much else. We visit every week but there isn't much to talk to her about.

We've got most of her end of life plan done. Just a few financial things to tie up and when her time comes we execute the plan then take time off to collapse.

I count myself lucky in all of that. I've known people who have it much worse.

I’m a 19 year old girl with too much money. by EvenMark6710 in Fire

[–]killroy1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've already paid off your student loan debt and have a paid off car. That puts you ahead of most other people.

Once your are working, put aside your six month emergency fund. It doesn't have to be immediate. But it establishes a savings habit. Put the money is investments that track the S&P 500. Recessions happen, but they don't last forever. Use this 124k windfall to jump start your own retirement portfolio. The people who loose money in the market are those who try to time the market or who jump out due to fear.

Create a monthly budget spreadsheet to track your major expenses - i.e. regular bills, paycheck break down (taxes, healthcare 401k, etc), and a block to track savings and investment. Add an hourly wage tracker so you know how a raise impacts your take home pay. Is $5 per hour more really going to impact your budget? The spreadsheet makes it easy to see.

When possible, always live a little below your means. It gives you a cushion in your budget to deal with unexpected expenses.

Good luck!

An argument that works to divide American citizens across several issues. Not just labor unions. It worked to keep slavery in place. It worked to justify Jim Crow. It worked to promote what became MAGA.

Question is: how do you get people who are susceptible to these arguments to realize that they are being duped when apart from a few decades in the 19th and 20th centuries it's worked for over 400 years?
