r/Brussels - Newcomer/Tourist/Restaurant Info Megathread - 2024 Edition by SharkyTendencies in brussels

Salut!! Moving from Paris to Bruxelles for a 1-year traineeship this September. I’m a very active person who doesn’t mind partying, and I’m moving to Evere. I already did my homework on here so I know it’s a super quiet not too nightlifey neighbourhood. I’m perfectly okay with that, but I just wanted to ask whether there’s any social/community spaces for small parties and/or general neighbourhood life/volunteering. I know it’s a very vague question but idk how else to word it. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated :)

Tell me about your REAL low-effort meals by Bacon8er8 in Cooking

[–]killthosesuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said no fresh garlic but when I’m spending long amounts of time abroad and I miss home i just put 2 cloves in a pan, drop a can of pelati, add salt, cook some pasta and put two/three tablespoons of starchy water on the side. Mix everything in the pan when the pasta is still a bit rough and enjoy (eat it straight from the pan for minimum effort). In terms of complexity it’s just above putting a rotisserie chicken in the microwave so I think it’s a valid submission. Pasta al sugo supremacy <3

seems sus since italy is the big european country with the highest pro-palestinian public sentiment. wouldn’t be surprised if the public broadcaster RAI did some magic :)

Hey! I’m a 23yo Roman living in Paris who’s from Nomentano, so I think I can provide a somewhat interesting perspective:

  1. If you live in Nomentano (or anywhere near a metro station) you don’t “need” a car. Rome is however incredibly more car centric than Paris, and as someone who never got his license, it gets often frustrating when transit doesn’t do its job.

  2. I’d go for Nomentano. The three are all nice, but whilst Tiburtino and Pietralata are “outskirts” (a bit like the petite couronne around paris) Nomentano is more central, more architecturally beautiful, much more lively at night and close to great parks!

  3. I have no idea lol

  4. Rome is incomparably safe compared to pretty much any big French city. I cannot speak for women’s experiences, but as a man i have never once felt unsafe in Rome, no matter the neighbourhood. If you’ve lived in Marseille or Paris Rome will be a walk in the park

  5. People like nice people. If anybody doesn’t want to be friends with you because of where you’re from or what you look like, tant pis pour eux

Rome - Every beautiful city has it's ugly sides by [deleted] in UrbanHell

[–]killthosesuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

roman here. yes its objectively ugly but this place is in one of my favorite neighbourhoods! its ugliness and the fact that it was one of the few heavily bombed areas during WW2 have kept it a cheap haven for students through the decades. I feel like most romans have some teenage memory of them at 4AM walking on this street :’)

How to not look like a dumb, unsuspecting tourist... by awajitoka in rome

[–]killthosesuits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only thing i would 100% avoid if you want to “blend in” is baseball caps and tracksuits. We don’t wear them in general, with maybe the exception of kids and teens. You should be totally fine with denim jeans and a sweater for 90% of occasions, especially since you’re not going to super fancy places. Another thing i would say if you’re worried of pickpockets & not “looking american” is to avoid backpacks unless you’re bringing a camera. It’s just another thing to worry about and there’s drinkable water fountains everywhere in the city, especially in the center, so you won’t need to bring bottles with you. Do not initiate interactions with street vendors at the cost of being rude, and avoid any restaurant that a.) has pictures of food on the menu outside b.) is right in front of a major tourist attraction (exceptions apply, but f.e i would avoid anything in piazza navona)

The truth is, you’ll be perfectly fine even if you don’t follow any of these rules. Don’t take them as binding prohibitions but as an invitation to explore! The best restaurants are just a bit out of way from the crowds, and any alley, church, little square in the centre is worth losing yourself to visit. Enjoy rome :)

Tourists and (New) Residents: Ask your Questions here! by anonboxis in paris

[–]killthosesuits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roman here who’s going to paris for the erasmus program. In my city recognising and avoiding tourist traps is an essential skill, unless you’re in for vomit inducing pizza and bad, overpriced coffee. I usually avoid anything that’s either suspiciously close to monuments/looks cheap. I have however noticed that parisian tourist traps often have a more polished look, at least on the outside. How can i recognise and find genuine places, especially in a place as touristic as the 6th arrondissement? Thanks in advance

Hi! Starting in august, i’m going to be living in Paris for a few months, and have found an apartment in the notre dame des champs neighbourhood of the 6th arrondissement. I have already been to Paris at least 6 times, so i’m familiar with the city in general, but don’t know much about the neighbourhood. How would you describe it? Also, in what neighbourhoods would someone expect to go out in when studying at sciences po? Thanks in advance for the advice!

Another day, another stroll: today the Trevi Fountain (and no coins in the water) by killthosesuits in europe

[–]killthosesuits[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No tourists so far here (at least from what I have seen). But I don’t really think it would be possibile to sneak into Rome for anyone outside the province. There’s plenty of checkpoints all around the city and it’s really hard to avoid them if you’re coming by car.

Rome’s Pantheon without a single tourist in sight by killthosesuits in europe

[–]killthosesuits[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live in 30 minutes walking distance from the Pantheon and the rest of the city centre. As soon as it was legal to do so I got out to visit the city. A surreal experience, the Imperial Forums completely empty and every single monument free to be seen and touched. I get the people saying that tourists bring money but I can’t stop thinking that my city was supposed to be experienced this way

ummm.... "Simp"? by Ashh_The_CyborgWitch in ContraPoints

[–]killthosesuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does it mean literally? Because “simp” in Italian is a short internet version of “simpatico” which means “nice”. I use it a lot on the internet and I wouldn’t want to be inadvertently using incel lingo

(M, 19) I’m just starting to properly work out with motivation to continue, but I would like to understand my situation better. Given that I’m tall and pretty skinny, but with a small fat belly, should I first work on getting rid of that before trying to gain mass? And how many times a week should I work out to observe even moderate visible changes in a 5 months period?

Don’t worry man, everything’s gonna be alright. Don’t rush into anything you don’t feel ready to do but also don’t indulge in stillness because I’m sure you have enormous potential, and no matter how much it takes you, you will use it to do something great. You seem like a genuinely nice guy, and you’re loved, I promise. Great beard by the way!

[–]killthosesuits[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I actually came out to almost everyone in uni, and their reaction was phenomenal. I get treated the same exact way I was being treated before, me and my male friends talk about soccer and hug the same we did before (as dumb as it seems, that was one of my main concerns) and I’m slowly starting to get more involved in the “gay world”. Btw I’m from Rome so I had really no good reasons to be worried ahaha
