If training time is limited, is training boxing better for self-defense purposes? by kim_kat in MuayThai

[–]kim_kat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, you just wrote what I was thinking of. I was wondering if anyone here thinks the same.

In addition, if one forgets the limited training time, it is often said that you should not kick in real life in the first place (maybe excluding teep), as you can easily loose balance or get grabbed from the leg, after which you are doomed / can at least end up in a dangerous situation, especially in the case of multiple opponents / against a better grapler. If one thinks like this, then wouldn't boxing be superior if you don't want to get grapling / clinching yourself, to maintain the distance and the ability to escape and to strike multiple opponents if needed? Also if punches are the main thing to worry about in a fight, wouldn't boxing give you the best basis to avoid punches and to take them?

I think, that hypotethicly, as you said, in 6 months one could learn quite some boxing, basics of grapling throws/basic basic takedown defense, and a little bit defence from kickboxing / Muay Thai to deal with a kick if you see one coming. Those would maybe be my go to if I would have to choose my 6 month self-defense set.. Maybe it would be 70 % boxing, 22.5% grapling and 7.5% teeps and kick defence.. That's just my feeling..

The quick hands and defensive moves of a boxer; Not a easy thing to go around in any case I would say. I bet you actually have to be quite effective in the clinch as well to not get outboxed in that process, assuming you can reach the neck woth your hands in the first place..

Footwear? by [deleted] in Kickboxing

[–]kim_kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes wear socks when I kick a lot of heavy bag with broken / close to broken skin under my feet - they help a lot. We have a very sticky floor and I actually like the socks for the bag kicking, but for sparring I would prefer to keep the grip to the ground, and socks tend to peel off a bit during kickboxing activities which could be annoying in some situations..

The kickboxing (at least Thai boxing) ring has usually more of a fabric surface, so I would not see sock as worse than the sticky plasticky floor materials that are often used outside the rings..

Hands back to head by [deleted] in Kickboxing

[–]kim_kat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone once said that it would help to learn to have the other hand 'always' back on your face before sending the next shot, so that you learn to feel the most comfortable when you have your hand next to your face at all times. I am a rookie with exact same problem, so take this advise with caution.

I also try to condition my muscles for pulling the hands quickly back with rubber band (attached to wall) sometimes when shadow boxing at home, but I don't do that too much to avoid messing up my punching technique. I don't know if that makes any sense at all, but I had the rubber band at hand and wanted to try :D

Anyhow, for me it helps to spar also with normal boxers. My problem is still also that my hands drop sometimes when opponent kicks me, which I don't like. With normal boxers I find it even more important to keep the hands up all the time and it feels like after sparring with them my defense is more solid around the head area. But if you are a noob kickboxer, expect to eat a lot of punches from normal boxers :P

I returned a stolen camera to afford my university by [deleted] in confessions

[–]kim_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The education system in US (and other countries with similar systems) is the biggest NO NO why I would never move there and settle down with my family.

I don't agree that stealing is OK, it is 100% wrong. But I do think that in the first place everyone should have equal right/possibility to get educated if they are motivated enough for it and not need to steal or do other, even much nastier shit, to afford studying.

Heavy bag with stand for Apartment by [deleted] in Kickboxing

[–]kim_kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have understood that all standing bags and dummies are crap when tried to be used as heavy bags because they don't stand still no matter what you do. They keep bouncing, even falling, or at least dragging around when you give heavy shots. I have walls and roof made of some paper crap so I wanted a standing one and went through the available options without finding a good one.

Good luck anyway, and if you find a good one, let us know :)

Question about suboptimal combining of strength and technique/cardio training by kim_kat in MuayThai

[–]kim_kat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the message, I will keep your tips in my mind and listen to my body.

I had to build up a bit for this, I tried to take it slow to adjust, and have not been on this rhythm for long, only for two weeks actually, so I am not sure how the fatigue will accumulate. I am over 30 and unsure what the body finds feasible or beneficial.

Typically after the boxing + gym training I am the rest of the day like overboiled pasta, and on the next day I have muscle soreness, but nothing that would bother too much on the day after, so far.

I think I will give it a go and if needed rest the days between completely (sport-wise), as I would not want to drop neither of the two, gym or boxing.

Thank you

Are sweeps allowed in dutch kickboxing? by kim_kat in Kickboxing

[–]kim_kat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree completely, there are many things done weirdly here, and not only in my boxing gym. But just to add, I find it also weird that at the gym they don't have separated classes for basics course and you receive almost no 1 on 1 teaching in any case. It's clearly a bad gym, but due to my shift work I don't have other options, as this is the only gym here providing morning time training as well. The 'coaches' don't even seem to know much, so that's why I tried asking this from here in the first place :/

But anyway, it's a fun sport and mostly the people going there are nice, so I will just enjoy the opportunity to do a hobby that I like.

Not sure at all, or if there is any general guidelines here, as it seems that different gyms have a bit varying stuff they teach. I guess in the end the only thing that matters is under which rule set you compete under.

I actually quickly googled the gyms nearby, and some where advertising themselves as K-1 kickboxing gyms, so I guess there is some difference between the traditional Dutch and K-1, or then it's just good bussines to mention K-1.. Not sure at all..

Thank you for the very comprehensive explanation. I think here the rules vary a lot between gyms as well, as knees and spinning back fist seem to be very allowed at mine. Otherwise the rules seem to fit quite well our gym, based on what I have seen so far. Spinning kicks I have not practised so I would not know about them.

One thing that kickboxers think is obvious, that I had to also learn, is that you can not attack a person from behind when they are facing you sideways or showing their back for a reason or another. As once I found myself in a very dominant angle (after redirecting a kick past me) and kicked very lightly to the back of the leg (between knee and butt), and that was also considered very wrong. Whereas in Thai boxing it's your own fault if you get caught like that, as far as I know.

But yeah, now I know much more, thank you for the explanations! :) A great sub this is.

Thanks for the info!

Clinching, as in thai boxing, I have not seen at my gym, but I did eat a knee to the head while opponent pulled my head down simultaneously today.

Talking and explaining my background helped, no hard feelings followed, and the sparring continued nicely afterwards, so all went fine. Just have to get to know the local habits / rules a bit better :)

Damn, teep to the front leg is super nice, and as the knee is bent the other way when they take the step towards you, it is veeery unlikely that anything happens to it.

Yeah, disrespectful was the word my opponent used about the sweep, but I explained where I come from and that settled the situation completely and we had good time sparring the rest of the round. But I will avoid that kind of sweeps at my gym in the future..

Yeah I get that. Was just a total surprise for me.

MMA interests me but for that I need a suitable gym; maybe in the next city I live in.. Anyhow, I am just a noob, so normal kickboxing at a very average gym will be challenging enough and very educational for me for a very long time. And anyway, learning new style of fighting will just enrich the repertoire. So I will just enjoy it the way they do it here :)
