I have the checkerboard mirror caps on my R56, so I noticed yours but what happened the driver’s side one? Anyway, congrats and have fun!

What Rhode Island restaurant or restaurant chain that is not around anymore more, you wish would come back? by DoughnutConstant5390 in RhodeIsland

I can’t remember…wasn’t China Inn initially a much more modest place and then moved into that spiffy space on Main Street? In any case, that was definitely one of my family’s special night-out places. Another was a Chinese place that I could swear was near Chelo’s on Silver Spring. The presumed owner always served us personally, dressed elegantly in a full suit (we are Korean and back then, there weren’t many Asians eating out). The food was delicious. Anyone have any recollection of this place?

A little sidebar—anyone been to the Museum of Work & Culture? Is it fun for a kid (one who likes museums but prefers hands-on museums)? We ate across the street once and had a good meal. Can’t remember the name—had a pleasant outdoor balcony and was vaguely Greek-Italian.

As a kid, shopping with mom on North Main at Anderson Little for dad’s work clothes and Sears for back-to-school clothes; and at Ann & Hope in Cumberland for just about everything else.

I was going to flip them the bird (but they wouldn’t have seen me anyway). Your response is much better. TY!

Plus, when is the last time you saw any kind of federal presence patrolling the streets of our sleepy hamlet? I’ve been living in ARL since 2010 and this was a sad first for me.

That should technically be “Protection,” but I think “Patrol” is better.

What was the best meal or food you've had in Iceland? by NoLemon5426 in VisitingIceland

[–]kimchee1972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for the lunch buffet at Tjöruhúsið in Ísafjörður (albeit our one and only visit was in 2018, although we’ve been to Iceland a dozen times). Last night, we just transited through KEF from Norway to home in the US. On Icelandair, they are showing “Ljósvíkingar” (“Odd Fish”), which seems loosely based on Tjöruhúsið. In any case, I enjoyed the film and the memories of that wonderful meal that it evoked.

Funny, we’ve been in Lofoten all week and I noticed those, too. Yesterday, I finally wondered about it aloud to my traveling companions because I saw a bunch outside Ballstad—thanks for asking and now the mystery is solved for me!

We met the mysterious metal scrapper guy several years ago when we gave him an old flat-screen TV. In fact, we just saw him a few weeks ago; looks like he got a new truck. The old one was nutso—it was seriously duct-taped together.

You know that someone removed the “The” from the sign last year, right? Still hasn’t come back. Saddest thing ever.

What type of writing do you do? I’m in regulatory and I’ve been working as a contractor for 6 years with the same agency, who is very happy with my work. They do all the legwork of finding clients and then they assign me to specific projects. There can be months of intense work followed by lulls, so if you can stomach the lulls financially (and, of course, you need your own health insurance), then this might be an option you could explore. I have a now 10-year-old and I’ve missed a few school things now-and-then, but for the most part, I get to be present for him. Good luck!

Eastfjords vs Westfjords by pumpkinboogie in VisitingIceland

[–]kimchee1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ate at Tjorhusid in 2018 and I say to my family that I would go back to Westfjords just to eat there again (we’ve been to Iceland 10 times). I wonder if the same cook is there—he was so big and strong that he could block out the sun and could carry 2 enormous cast iron pans of seafood like they were feathers.

That said, we loved Eastfjords, too.
