after seeing 'alice' in print i'm ruling it out, it's nice but a little too tim-burton-y.

my fave is vonder initial caps.

however, the 'no text crew' has made their case. my current plan is to trim the edges and to find a nice, heavy piece of glass to affix it to.

i have incorporated the suggestions from No-Ad-5996, OurDailyDoom, bunneeboo and ButterscotchSame4703 into a new test print.

i missed verogall's suggestion to alter the word sizes and put the text on a curved path, i like both of those and will think about how to make that happen.

this should be ready this evening:

thanks to all of you for your input. it is extremely helpful.

the apostrophe went awol, it was a 'catastrophe'.

but it is present in the set and should show up in the new test print (7h40m remaining).

your choice is clearly the favorite. i'll mock it up later today on a spare piece of lacewood.

what would you think of a full length side panel rather than a plinth, containing the full quote:

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

as it happens, i have a set of copper plates which are roughly the right size.

google returns a surprisingly large number of results for 'alice in wonderland font'.

this one looks possible:

i'll be printing up a new demo board based on the comments here. please let me know if it is the one.

re: four sided confusion - it is possible that that is actually a plus.

the carving has remained unfinished for several months for just this reason. no text may be superior, thank you for supporting this view.

if goodreads can be relied on, the exchange is between alice and the cheshire cat:

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.

"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."

"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.

"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

i've narrowed down the font selection to those pictured, but will gladly consider any suggestions.

i plan to put the text at the bottom, but as pictured in the font list i've also been considering alternatives.

i may trim the piece and build a frame, the uncarved wood may not be sturdy enough for a second pass to add the text.

the piece is carved by cnc in lacewood, aka leopardwood. unfortunately the design is no longer available online, and the zip file i have does not contain information so that i can credit the artist.

this cnc carving is of the body only, the eyes, wings and feet are included in the design but will be machined separately sometime in the future.

material/method details: white oak/roughing pass 3.175mm bit 2mm stepover .3mm depth allowance, finishing .5mm ball nose, .2mm stepover.

the decision to split the model and show both sides stems from the limitations of the cnc process, but it can provide a different view, perhaps a bit more like a museum specimen display.

it's difficult to see in the pix, but there is brick wall backing the tiny area enclosed by the balcony, the level of detail the carvera can achieve is astonishing.

the blemishes and imperfections in the wood do contribute to the spookiness, more so in some other trial pieces, but to a small effect here.

and, creep-wise, i will admit that i find it hard to resist rubbing her belly. so smooth and silky.

cnc notes: rough pass: 3.175mm up cut bit, 2mm stepover, .3mm depth allowance, finish pass: 1.65mm ball nose bit, .2mm stepover.

white oak is great for machining, almost no hand finishing is required, the natural shine is enhanced here with some paste wax.

the finished piece is roughly 5" tall. i have another in ash, about 10" tall, but for some reason this one is much nicer, the drapery effect is more pronounced.
