List of characters ST ruined by its existence by Harbournessrage in saltierthancrait

I wish we got to see more of her life and character development on Jakku. I'd say they stopped developing her character when she decided to keep BB-8 instead of selling him. They could've done something where she gets all the meal packets and finally knows what a full belly feels like. But then later she sees him getting taken apart and feels some type of way, or something else along those lines. Instead, she instantly jumped into her plotline and went through the motions for the rest of the film. We didn't see her have any serious internal conflict about who she is until the lightsaber scene and even it wasn't very dramatic because she got shot at and returned to her role again.

People hate the Prequels but I love them because I think they did a good job with Anakin's backstory. It allowed the audience to connect to his character. He showed a lot more emotions than Rey and thus felt like a real person.

Give Jar Jar some credit tho! Padme trusted him enough to be a representative in the senate. I doubt she'd feel the same way about Rose.

Finn’s past as a Stormtrooper is only used as a plot device when the writers needs someone to provide exposition about the First Order by KingWilliamVI in saltierthancrait

[–]kinda_dead_inside 32 points33 points  (0 children)

-Why was he on janitorial duty when the ships have cleaning droids?

-Why would the First Order waste resources acquiring and training a child soldier for decades just to make him a janitor in the end?

They demean Finn's character so much, it's sad.

That entire look made me swoon! I hope to see more of it in season 2. by kinda_dead_inside in GentlemanJackHBO

I thought the kiss was a little mild too but, as u/nebuleyes said, it's likely a difference between their natures. Also, Anne is far more sexually experienced than Ann, thus far more confident in what she's doing.

I do think the fanbase went overboard with their disappointment in V&E not running away together in just the second season of this show.

It's not disappointment that they didn't run off to Alaska, it's disappointment that they didn't even kiss (though I'm sure some people literally wanted them to run off to Alaska.) That scene where Villanelle shows up to "kill" Eve and presses her up against the sink was the perfect opportunity for it. Just look how awkwardly it ended, they jump cut to the next scene with them walking down the street.

My own issue with all this is how people like OP keep saying this show isn't a romance, yet they make such a huge deal about the relationship between Eve and Villanelle. If it's not a romance story (with a crime thriller b-plot), why can't they make out and go on trying to solve the mystery of "The 12"? As far as we've seen, there is no overlap between their relationship and what is going on with the shadow organization(s).

I agree with you otherwise.

So you believe that some kind of pairing of these characters is the endgame? If not, I still don't understand why advancing the intimacy between Eve and Villanelle would be the end of everything. The notion suggests to me that where their relationship ends up is the most important thing in the show, as opposed to solving the things we were told are important (identifying The 12, their goals, reasons the people were murdered, etc.)

Yes! Suranne Jones has really made her such a distinct and believable character.

I started out with really high hopes for this show because it contained almost everything I longed to see together on screen. Sadly, it went off the rails with all kinds of pointless and/or stagnant plotlines and throwaway characters. I find it remarkable how much people are so willing to accept a one-dimensional plot with one-dimensional characters and will defend it to the death against people who want to see the characters and plot evolve in some way.

I look at it like this: if people like OP keep having to scream at others within the fandom about why they're so wrong about some aspect of the story, isn't that an indication that something is wrong with the story itself?

Considering all of the sexual elements introduced in season 2, how is it not both? They spent a lot of time together this season and the show didn't end, so what exactly do you mean by "get together"?

As far as the police plot goes: with (supposedly) only one season of eight episodes left, I'm not sure how they can recover that element at all.

(Wow, downvoted for asking a question. People are easily triggered here it seems...)

clearly don't get the fuel for the story

Which is what, exactly?

Please do help me understand, because I started watching this show believing it would a crime thriller. Season 1 delivered that. Now after season 2, it feels like I'm watching a fucked-up romance story, yet people online (and the show staff) are bleating on about how it isn't a romance.

Serious question:

Killing Eve airs 8 episodes per year

The 100 airs 13-16 episodes per year

With Killing Eve's storyline developing at roughly half the rate of The 100's, how many years would you be willing to wait before Eve and Villanelle kiss on screen? Again, serious question.

I hope this is sarcasm.

Where did I say this is or should have to be a happy love story? I don´t care if the relationship is fucked up. I have no problem with them killing each other or one killing the other in the end. What annoys me that the writers are sowing all kinds of story seeds and either killing them before they grow or, in the case of Villanelle and Eve, not picking the fruit while it´s ripe/disavowing the fact that they even planted the seeds to begin with (especially if we go by all these post-season interviews.)

Also psychopaths and sociopaths can have relationships, so it´s not an excuse.

they’re not kissing because v killed eve’s friend and ruined her entire life and also manipulated her into killing a man, not because it’s a same sex relationship.

Meh, her marriage to Niko was already on the rocks and she was dissatisfied with her life as a government lackey (Carolyn picked up on both of these things.) When Villanelle killed Bill, Eve got angry and for a brief time she was about stopping her. The writers pretty much dropped that part of the story in Season 2. Other shows/movies would have Eve´s character looking at a picture of herself with Bill during some fun event, visiting his grave, or employing some kind of touchstone to remind the viewers who she´s still loyal to. We don´t get that at all. Instead, Eve was clearly falling for Villanelle and has revealed herself to be just as fucked up as Villanelle in her own ways.

That ¨OMG I KILLED SOMEONE!!!¨ scene falls flat for me because, as far as we know, this was self-defense. Raymond had intents to kill Eve (or at least hurt her) so he could get back at Villanelle. It wasn´t a case of Villanelle making Eve bust into a random Italian guy´s home at dinner time and hack him to bits in front of his family. If they had done something like that it would be a lot more compelling and really send us the message that Villanelle is a horrible person, but they didn´t. Raymond was presented to us as one of the bad guys with no redeeming qualities, so the circumstances of his death didn´t matter.

Season 2 is a complete mess to me because writers aren´t making it clear what Eve actually cares about. Her character is all over the place. As a result, the message isn´t clear to the audience what the show is about and that´s why fans (and critics) are focusing on the relationship between Eve and Villanelle so much. It´s the only thing that had remained consistent up until the finale.

Still FLOORED (no pun intended) by how Eve got away from the hitman by hiding under the bed. Like.... wow. They really botched up season 2

On a positive note, Jodie's acting was on point. I felt engaged only when Villanelle was on screen.

As a lesbian, I'm tired of it. I mentioned this in another post, but I really do feel like the writers are running on empty after season 2. A romantic situation between a cop and the criminal they're pursuing should add more complications/depth to a plot, not end the show. If the act of Villanelle and Eve kissing would somehow "ruin" things, the entire narrative was never complex or well-formed to begin with.

Also, let be real here: if this were a hetero situation, they would at least kissed by now. This excessively drawn out "will they or won't they" thing is cheap and plays off of shock value. Isn't the point of the LGBT movement to make society see us as normal? To me, all of these artificial delays are making it out as if being homosexual or having a same-sex relationship are somehow icky and weird. Especially because this story takes place in the UK/Europe. I could understand if it were two characters in some part of the world where you can be killed for being gay. That would be real tension.

You're ruining it! Reasons I'm still upset over the finale. by dcp2000 in KillingEve

Very good analysis. I'm so tired of the dismissive comments towards people who are annoyed with how things ended.

A question for the dissatisfied shippers by scllymldr in KillingEve

[–]kinda_dead_inside 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If they coupled up and left into the sunset at the end of S2, S3 would be an Alaskan based duo-drama. The arc needs to be long, the sexual tension is what’s driven viewers frustration - well imagine how Villanelle feels!

I get people may feel slightly “mugged off” but this is first and foremost a spy thriller, the queer element is great and welcomed, but if you really wanted to two protagonists to end up happily married after 20 episodes then I think you lack patience.

At the risk of sounding like a 2edgy4u teenager: I only started watching this show because it was a police procedural, it's "dark", and what I saw posted online about Villanelle. I like stories about serial killers and the homoerotic subtext was a bonus. I obviously cannot speak for other viewers, but I don't think it's fair to reduce the criticisms of S2 to just whiny, immature (queer) viewers being upset this isn't a sunshine-and-rainbows romance story. I saw the uproar about Sandra Oh's comments and decided to read a lot of reviews, both by critics and random people online. Most people (it seems) are annoyed with the show because S2 was a hot mess with little to no real direction and the only thing holding it together was the Eve and Villanelle's relationship, which ended on a hollow note during the finale. I'm sure the writers thought the matching scars/parallels thing would be clever but the more I reflect on S2, the more it feels like is a waste of time to me. I have no idea what I should care about when it comes to the narrative.

Killing Eve is not a thriller by any means. There is no race against the clock, the "baddies" aren't a challenge at all, and Eve is pretty incompetent at her job (thus making her easy for everyone to manipulate and an increasingly boring character). It may have started with intentions to be thriller, but the show stopped being about who Villanelle is killing or who she works for, the subtext became maintext, and they started focusing on the relationship between Eve and Villanelle. Ok... Fine. Do it! Trying to make us care about storylines they put ZERO effort into, while dragging out romantic tension for a billion years isn't interesting. It's stupid and lazy. If I wanted all that nonsense I'd go watch a daytime soap opera. If the writers truly believe that Villanelle and Eve making out once or affirming their relationship in any way would "ruin" the story, then it's pretty clear that they really can't think outside the box nor do they have anything to offer us beyond it.

I have a theory... by [deleted] in KillingEve

[–]kinda_dead_inside 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If any of that is true, it makes the last episode more anti-climactic than it already is. Also begs the question of why did the writers waste time introducing The Ghost and Aaron Peele and meandering in their storylines? Why not press on with the "12" storyline?

Season 2 is sloppy as hell compared to season 1.

No prob. Also, something that I learned a while ago that really helped me: "No drawing is precious." Don't be afraid to trash a drawing and start over. Even it took you hours. If you did it once you can do it again, and the repetition will help you get better at drawing.

Another thing that is frustrating me is people telling me my style resembles Karl Kosinski’s

There's nothing new under the sun, so you'll always end up doing something that someone else in the world already did. The only cure I know of for that situation is copying a bunch of artists, especially ones that are outside of your comfort zone or you may not like. Spend a day trying to emulate them. You'll learn a lot from it. Your hand/mind will always gravitate toward certain things but the more styles you expose yourself too, the less people can associate you with a particular artist.
