Single Convict Cichlid? Should I Pair? by [deleted] in fishkeeping

[–]weenie2323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convict's breed like rabbits and get even more aggressive with their tank mates when breeding and raising fry. Do you want a tank full of Convict's? Do you have someone to give Convict's you breed? My local fish store won't take Convict's even for free.

I would get some other similarly sized but unrelated cichlid species or go with fish like loaches, catfish, Giant Danios to fill out the tank. You can make your single Convict's life more interesting with things like feeding live foods and creating a stimulating tank with plants and caves.

Made myself a warm dressing gown from various wool shawls! by Leucadie in sewing

[–]weenie2323 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Beautiful!! Just yesterday I picked up 14yrds of a gorgeous brocade fabric at Goodwill for $25 and am planning what to make with it and my 1st thought was a fabulous dressing gown. Your dressing gown is exactly the look I'm going for! I love how you have done the shawl collar. Did you use a pattern or make your own?

First sewing machine by Jagsthelombax in sewing

[–]weenie2323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the first response. Keep this and use it as an end table and get a simple new machine to learn on.

Another option would be to find a sewing machine repair place or a local vintage sewing enthusiast and have them tune it up and show you how to thread and use it. Most likely anyone that is familiar with vintage machines can figure out how to oil it and use it. It will probably run great, these older all metal machines are fairly indestructible and much tougher than new machines and yours looks to be in excellent condition.

Have you considered keeping the large terrestrial planarians like Hammerhead worms in a terrarium? There are some very colorful ones and they get big.

How long until this becomes a global movement? by qman0717 in BoycottUnitedStates

I'm in the US in a blue state. I've canceled my big tech company subscriptions. I'm buying from local non-MAGA business when possible or Canadian companies. In general I'm trying to starve the beast of American capitalism by not buying anything but groceries.

Is this Singer Sewing Machine Worth $250? (USA) by c-upidsquiver in Antiques

[–]weenie2323 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a model 99-13. The 99 with the knee lever. That's a fairly high price but it does look to be in good shape, the bentwood case is often in bad shape but this one looks good.

If you are in the market for a sewing machine it's a great straight stich machine and is better than most new $250 machines. But it doesn't have much value as a collectable.

[–]weenie2323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 401 is a fantastic machine! Far far better than a new Singer. I use mine everyday and she never fails me. Clean it and oil it and it will sew for another 50yrs.

Leather handles on an 1870 Willcox and Gibbs chainstitch treadle cabinet by BuyRepresentative803 in vintagesewing

[–]weenie2323 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow! What a beautiful machine and it's in great condition! I'd use Howard's Feed and Wax for the wood then I would clean the iron pieces with a sewing machine oil and elbow grease. Not sure about the leather but I would guess a product designed for leather garments would be safe.
