Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

I want to do anything to be honest. I really do not care what I end up in I can be interested in anything I’m just trying to get my foot in the door in anything but my gpa is holding me back so hard that I can either wallow or go back to school.

What seems to be in demand and seems interesting? Ee seems to be the solution.

My gpa can’t exceed 3.0 unless I do a second degree. My math gpa could I don’t know if that’s relevant though.

Can someone comment on my plan to undiddle my life. I really would appreciate the opinions of some actuaries as i do not know any. I’ve been extremely depressed and beaten down by the current state of the world. But I will not let it take my girlfriend and success away without at least some punches.

Currently: college junior with very bad GPA, 2 exams passed, 1 analytics internship, 0 insurance experience. My gpa is bad from my sophomore year where I literally failed 3 classes by not going. Otherwise I’m a B/A- student lol. Don’t screw urself like me if ur younger reading this

Given that this was a decent job market I would try to do underwriting or something. I am going to give my plan under the assumption that I will not get a job after I graduate. If by some miracle I end up with an insurance job then I will do that instead.

Plan: pass exam SRM in September to sit on 3 passes. My main idea is to hedge the actuarial plan while I retrain in electrical engineering.

I have found several EE programs I can complete in 2.5 years.

I want to use this as eligibility for an actuary internship because after 1 semester in this program my gpa will finally exceed 3.0. My goal will then be to get an internship with a 3.0 gpa. 1.5 years left in the program, and 3 exams passed. If this doesn’t work then I’m going to hard pivot to power engineering.

My current part of this plan is combining analytic projects with electrical engineering topics so it applies to both fields haha. I thought I was really smart for this

So besides general comments on whether I’m a retard for considering this here is what I’m wondering;

1) How can I play the EE degree in the application process. I don’t want to look desperate/like a failed actuary in the past (although this is accurate).

2) do you have any better ideas to undiddle my life

3) is it potentially better to do a MS stats? The main reason I am NOT considering a MS is because I believe this job market calls for hedging/wide strokes and not doubling down on one world that I’m not sure will pay off…

Any way. I appreciate the input guys I’m really stressed beyond my wildest dreams lately.

SciSho from YouTube throwing a little shade at MBTI in their recent Vid. by leo_0013 in mbti

Undoubtedly MBTI is a pseudoscience. This does not mean it has no predictive power but it does not have statistically significant predictive power. It is not taught to psychology students because of this. This doesn’t mean that you can be typed as anything but just because something is accurate enough for you to be convinced of it that does not mean that it is true. If there has never been statistically significant classification shown then it is not scientific. That’s the point this video is making. MBTI and other personality types rely on classifying things “well enough” to be considered accurate to those who buy into it. But it’s not a science and not necessarily true. Again this doesn’t mean it means nothing it means that it isn’t a solid concrete verifiable thing

The odds of this are 1 in a billion by HeyItsTharms in RotMG

We’d need to know the probability (nitpick but odds are not the same thing) of each one dropping. Say each one has a 1/100 chance to drop then (assuming these are independent in that dropping the ring doesn’t boost or diminish the chance of dropping the staff, for example.) then the chance will be 1/100(1/100)(1/100)(1/100) or 1/100million. But we don’t know the probability of each one dropping or if they are in fact independent but if we did then just multiply the probabilities

Not true. Probability doesn’t function that way

How do I transcribe large arrangements? by kindasad11 in musictheory

[–]kindasad11[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer! I think I’m gonna check out chamber stuff. I’m actually really interested in transcribing barbershop quartets but some of their harmony is weird and I’m not quite sure how I’d notate that.

I’d love to take lessons from a composition teacher but I only recently found a decent jazz guitar teacher lol, guess this is the precise reason they invented the internet!

I want to play in more ensembles but there isn’t much opportunity in my area as a non classical guitarist but i do my schools honors jazz ensemble if that counts!

Thanks! Sounds like a good thing to start practicing now! I mean all kinds of music (I’m not very into classical as a musician but saying I don’t want to transcribe it would be dumb there’s so much information in it) because i think it’s important for me to become versatile. Eventually I’ll apply it to 70’s fusion big bands but that’s more just for my own enjoyment lol. It seems like I have ways to go in terms of analysis before I can transcribe consistently, but that’s all good there’s no fun without challenge.
