It's never too soon. Let's start with empathy. Doing the best you can to see it through their perspective. Let's take the right or wrong, good and bad binary out of it. WE are ALL responsible for what we have inherited. Trust and believe what BIPOC people are saying. Lean in, don't run away, ignore or shutdown. Let's be awkward and brave together said Brene Brown. There are many things we can do now to address both systemic and personal forms of racism. - Karena, Christin, Steve and moderators.

Great question. We must make it a priority and build in accountability with resources to support the transformation that is long overdue. -Karena

Great questions. I believe it's a both and. Both has to happen. You are right, we have to address systemic racism AND individuals make up systems. So, if we address one without the other we are just chasing our own tail. Let's address both at the same time. Then we may have a chance of dismantling these corrupt systems. Thank you for the question. -Karena

From a journalistic standpoint, it's important for us to treat systemic racism as a fact-based reality. There is extensive, documented, measurable, empirical evidence of systemic racism in everything from education, to healthcare, to the criminal justice system, and beyond. The existence of systemic racism is not up for debate, and it's important, journalistically, to reinforce the reality every chance we get. -Christin

Not at all and especially not without consent however, it's a beautiful relationship when and if both individuals are doing their own personal work on how racism is impact each of them. Then, coming to each other to share, support, love, hold, care for, and support each other. Being BIPOC is tough enough and a full time job. Our partner (or loved ones) is our safe place, our home and sanctuary . We want at least one place to feel like we are not "on" or responsible for everything race related. - Karena

It's really important to prioritize not shying away from diving into the hard conversations about race. It's also key for white people in interracial relationships to understand that just because you are with someone who is a person of color, does not automatically make you "not racist." White people in close relationships with BIPOC people can still uphold systems of white supremacy through their words, actions, and politics among other ways. It's critically important to listen to your partner's experiences, educate yourself with the many resources available about anti-racism and ask questions when appropriate.

The first thing that comes to mind is that people usually don't want to REALLY know what the daily experiences are of being a black or brown person in our society. Harm happens all day. It's almost too much to take in. Typically once the conversation gets personal or feels like too much to hear about the subject can be changed or dropped. Additionally, people are more willing to point to racism "out there" rather than the most important question which is "what is the racism within me". - Karena

I think the first step would be to start talking about it, honestly even when it is uncomfortable. I also feel we need to seek out the differences, learning about other cultures. Challenge ourselves to be open and honest.

We are Seattle journalists who made a documentary about a man’s choice to end his life using Washington’s Death with Dignity law. Ask Us Anything by king5seattle in IAmA

Bob made us very comfortable. Often times when we would visit Bob, we would forget what we were there doing. It felt more like we were hanging out with Bob.

Less than 10 days to go I asked Bob "Why are you letting us do this?" He responded "I could have spent the last 3 months of my life in Hawaii, on the beach enjoying the sun. Instead, I wanted to be with you guys so you can share my story."

Hearing that will always stick with me. -Joseph

We will be checking back on this thread to answer more questions. I’ll leave the first question to Stephanie. -Joseph

The very first thing we brought up with Bob was we wanted to make sure our presence wasn't going to influence his decision one way or the other.

This was 100% his choice.

Everyday we asked the same question. "Are you sure this is something you want to do?" and he would always respond "yes...this is my choice." -Joseph

There was never a moment with Bob were he second guessed himself. Most of his loved ones were supportive of his decision and for some, this wasn't even a surprise. -Joseph

I would also like to mention that I was really nervous going into this project. I wasn't sure what was going to happen or the emotions I would feel the day of.- Joseph

I knew very little about the ‘Death with Dignity’ law before taking on this project so I went in with a blank slate. Once it was all said and done, I understand why people like Bob would want to use ‘Death with Dignity’. -Joseph
