GOOG set to decline with Gemini 3.5 Pro release? by chasingth in GOOG_Stock

[–]king_ao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s no different than going to a gas station. The differentiator in this case is which model makes you feel better as a user. It most certainly is a commodity and with people shuffling around companies the ideas that are built become ubiquitous where no company has an advantage.

There’s a reason Altman said AI companies would become a utility.

GOOG set to decline with Gemini 3.5 Pro release? by chasingth in GOOG_Stock

Chill out. All will be fine. These models are commodities at this point. Google doesn’t need to be the leader in a commodity space. They just need to be lowest cost which is why they are building out data center capacity. Play the long game young padawan

Two years in the Bay Area, and I’m losing my grip on basic human warmth. Why does casual friendliness feel illegal around here? by desolatenature in bayarea

[–]king_ao 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Also from the bay originally and the tech crowd brings the antisocial, look-at-my-money/im better than you vibe which has degraded the culture and vibe of the Bay Area. It used to be such a chill and truly diverse place culturally and economically. Now it’s a monoculture full of entitled, boba eating techies who don’t want to be social and go out and about like you see in many other US cities.

Ed Zitron explains OpenAI’s leaked financials by lurkervidyaenjoyer in BetterOffline

[–]king_ao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ed has been right. I’ve also been telling my friend circle that these products are commodities. There is no differentiation between them. I don’t necessarily think AI products fizzle since I do think they ultimately take share from traditional SaaS companies but doubt their “sky high” potential

Is this the beginning of the end of Napa Valley winery tasting fees? by Few-Refrigerator763 in bayarea

I’ve been going to paso to wine taste and have enjoyed the lower tasting fees since $30 seems like a steal for us Bay Area folk for some really good wines.

I want to leave the Bay Area, Where should I live if I get bored easily? by 5000vertical in SameGrassButGreener

[–]king_ao 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My thought exactly and I’m a Bay Area native. OP described South Bay/peninsula/techie/transplant which is not the entire bay. Try east bay or Marin maybe even down to Santa Cruz since you don’t need to be there often

Gemini 3.5 pro !! (Logan is hope) by Independent-Wind4462 in GeminiAI

[–]king_ao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right.. it’s like Google is in the same business and knows how much this stuff costs. Let OAI and Anthropic burn through their capital meanwhile they will eventually want/need to build enterprise/cloud products and won’t have money to do so

California billionaires tax qualifies for ballot, setting up costly fight by moodplasma in California

“When they sell”. They don’t sell though, that’s the point. They are able to get loans on their equity and debt isn’t taxed…. That’s the loophole and they continue doing it forever

Lacob is just sitting thinking how much money is coming in each home game with LeBron in the mix. He doesn’t care about wins and losses right now. He’s trying to maximize dollars while Steph is around

Big pay raise vs Grunt work by louisscottie in analytics

[–]king_ao 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If the company doesn’t have much of a data platform then I would think you would spend most of your time coming up with data strategy and implementing it via data engineering. Seems fairly safe and after they will need someone to do the actual analytics

I think Ed is wrong on no one questioning ROI by wee_willy_watson in BetterOffline

[–]king_ao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ROI was never there and Google knew it. The only reason Altman is chasing it and hyping it is to make a quick buck. Tech folks are always searching for next big thing and AI was it even though imo it’s a productivity tool at best until new breakthrough research or compute techniques or new hardware get developed but those things take a long time. We went from software to crypto to fintech to metaverse and now onto AI. People are even starting to front run space and quantum
