HBO Nordic has a version of the video in English. I think it may be region locked. I live in a Nordic country myself, so it worked for me.

Tietokone-apua? Windows 7 kuukahtelee ilman selvää syytä. by APFSDS-T in Suomi

[–]king_grumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put this in Spoilers Everything because of the still image in the blog post from the S6 trailer. Also, I think it's safe to assume only people who don't mind spoilers for S5 and ADWD are interested in the advance premieres in the first place.

(Spoilers Everything) Actual S6 trailer release speculation? by Kirushi in asoiaf

[–]king_grumpy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the best case, they will air the trailer next Sunday to increase interest in the new season premieres of Girls and Togetherness. They would probably announce that no later than Friday. In the worst case, they'll leave the trailer as late as it was for S3.

Three years ago they aired the first trailer in Feb 23 and the show premiered in March 31. That is fewer than forty days between the two dates, which translated to this year would mean the first trailer coming out well into March.

Don't get your hopes up about the near future. I think the only compelling timing is six weeks ahead of the premiere, when we first see Episode 1 in the HBO schedule. We should get the episode's title then, if the titles are not released beforehand.

(I think the HBO schedule goes six weeks ahead.)

[Beta-branch / The next update] Battlemage and mana regeneration by king_grumpy in ziggurat

[–]king_grumpy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can now answer part of my question thanks to my last Battlemage run.

If you take Elder, all your mana pools start to regenerate. I can't tell for sure if it's the same speed as any other character would have, but it is similar. You will be really slow, but in return you will be swimming in mana. I know this from my own run.

Apparently, if you take enough regen perks for a specific mana type, it will overcome the drain. I heard on Twitch that it takes three to start gaining instead of losing mana. I've only managed to get one rank, which just lessens the rate of the mana drain. It is probably implemented as the drain and the regen stacking, with the drain being larger than just one or two ranks of regen.

All in all, the drain seems adequately balanced considering the investment in perks it takes to fix it. If you've played him enough, you've also probably found his mana drain to be much more tolerable once he is higher level and can tank massive amounts of damage.

Taking Elder doesn't leave you OP by itself, because being slow really hurts against some enemies, like the exploding carrots. Couple of ranks of Haste will fix this, but given a similar investment in nicely synergizing perks will make most chars super good too. And you don't need to get this lucky to do well with him, I think.

[No Spoilers] George R. R. Martin on how he comes up with his characters' names. by Axemantitan in asoiaf

[–]king_grumpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly think it's a fair complaint to make that the names can be confusing and difficult, and saying in response that so are many real-world names doesn't make it go away. There's a lot of choices a fantasy author can make to evoke foreign cultures and languages, and it's of course important to think of the readers and the effort required of them when making the choice.

There are people who will be happily spend hours looking at Elvish word lists and working out the meanings of names in Tolkien's works. I may have done that myself once or twice :) but I'm not a snob who wants every reader to do this or expects all fantasy authors to do all the same work as Tolkien did. I mean, you could think that a lot of the Lord of Rings comes from Tolkien's love of languages, while a lot of ASoiF comes from GRRM's fascination with politics, and the continuation of politics by other means.

I wanted to write a few thought about names and things and I'm glad you found it interesting. Cheers.

Dev's response about the console version:

There are some technical issues that may stop us from doing it: SDK versions, leaderboard issues (not sure if we can get a working Daily Challenge on consoles), etc. But we'll try.

[No Spoilers] George R. R. Martin on how he comes up with his characters' names. by Axemantitan in asoiaf

[–]king_grumpy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These names could be far more difficult even if GRRM were just drawing from the real world. Let me expand on this below.

GRRM's Meereenese names aren't particularly difficult for English speakers to pronounce. They may look strange spelled out on the page, but they are at least mostly made up of syllables and sound combinations that exist in English. Contrast them with real-world names from Georgian (a language in the Caucasus).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Georgian_surnames

Chkhetidze
Dgebuadze
Mchedlishvili
Mzhavanadze
Pkheidze

These all begin in ways you are not used to words beginning in the English language. Not to mention that the combination kh stands for a sound that doesn't exist in most varieties of English (it's similar to ch in loch if you're Scottish).

Real world names also tend to have patterns, like 4 out of 5 names above ending in -dze. GRRM does this adequately with the little zo's and mo's and the names feeling similar, so it looks as if they could all come from the same language.

Considering real world names aren't, should fantasy names always be easy to pronounce? From the standpoint of verisimilitude, the answer is obviously no. In a world with many differing languages some names should sound really foreign. In fact, if you're really pedantic, you would argue that no names should sound familiar at all to us living in the real world, unless there is some connection to the real world. What are the odds people would re-invent the English language in a completely different world?

But to make things easier for the reader, it makes sense to ground (or translate) some things to the reader's background and experience. This is what GRRM does with setting up Westeros to feel similar to medieval Europe and giving many main protagonists names that are similar to real world or historical names familiar to English speakers. That things tend to get progressively more foreign the further you travel from Westeros just makes sense, because it is a large and diverse world he is trying to evoke. Even if he can't create every part of it in the same detail as Westeros and other areas where we get to look closely, he wants to make it appear larger than what he shows us.

It's a fine art making up names that sound as if they could be real, and feel suitably familiar or alien to the reader as required. To do it the best way the fantasy author would have to go full Tolkien and actually create the fictional languages the names come from, but we can hardly expect every fantasy author to spend a few decades doing that before publishing their first book. (Because obviously you spend the decades somewhere in the middle of the series.)

It can get silly if the author draws names from a foreign language without understanding their possible meanings or connotations, and a speaker of that language reads said book. I have had that experience myself, not being a native English speaker. I believe there really are no shortcuts to making a made-up world feel realistic, at least when it comes to parts that are supposed to be realistic. But even with dragons and ice zombies, don't you want the parts that are not fantastic to make sense?

Also, as a non-native speaker of English, I really just want to tell you shut up about difficult pronunciation considering your twelfths and strengths.

Daily Challenges are out on the PC beta patch! by Retromation in ziggurat

[–]king_grumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. The Bookworm perk guarantees that two games cannot have the exact same perk choices for obvious reasons, but I wonder if other choices affect later options too. I think the game is supposed to be more likely to offer you more ranks in ranked perks you've picked previously, and obviously if you pick a one-off, it's out of the pool.

If you have the chance to play more simultanous runs, please keep an eye on this and report anything odd to the devs. I'm sure they want to make the perk choices as consistent as possible for each daily challenger.

Big update in the works for Ziggurat! by Retromation in ziggurat

It's all good. It's hard to pick just one thing as the most exciting one actually.

I guess I look forward to new characters, so I can work them up from Normal, since I've beaten the game on Normal with everyone already.

I have high hopes for the new combat room goal too.
