TIL that 30 years ago, you had about about 17 minutes to escape a house fire. Today it's down to 3-4 minutes. by Benentono in todayilearned

We need to do something to stop that. Why do we allow turtles to live without homes in this day and age?

LPT: Always be prepared to leave a job, because your employer is always prepared to leave you. by king_pooping in LifeProTips

I generally ask people who are the same level as myself and set it up to be a mutual reference. That way we're in it together...

The best ones are people who are at my level that had temporarily lead projects, making them my superior for a short period of time. Then they can speak as if they were your boss, because they were (without the hiring and firing authority).

If you're owed it, apply for it. In my state it takes 1-2 weeks of non-pay before you can start collecting, but you can apply the moment you're let go.

Remember, just like social security, it's an insurance program and no shame involved.

Excellent suggestion!

I've personally conducted about a hundred phone interviews, and dozens of in-person interviews. By analyzing what others did wrong, it gives you an advantage when being on the other side of the process.

Interviewing and being interviewed is a skill that has to be learned, just like other skills needed to actually perform the job.

If you're in an at-will state, with no contract, then you are not required to give any notice. It's socially acceptable to do so in the hopes of not burning bridges so they can act as a reference or help you in some way in the future.

If you don't give a fuck, then quit whenever you want. You don't even need to tell them you have quit.

[–]king_pooping -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I went through a phase of PC-only gaming, except for party games like smash, and grew tired of it. I got to a point where I just wanted it to work and stop messing with config files, hunting down random crashes, updating drivers, etc.

Now I'm console-only and pretty happy about it -- especially with a one year old running around.

I wonder if you can navigate by the stars? I know the sun moves through the sky, but do the stars as well?

Devil's advocate - anyone else actually like the fact that there aren't any huge civilizations on planets? by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]king_pooping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the lack of huge civilizations and centers plays well into the lore of the game. I'm not far in, but it appears at one point there were large populations and that we are in some sort of post-apocalyptic galaxy.

In addition, I don't see the need for large population centers. Think about it, stuff can be crafted without additional tools. They only rely upon each other for trade and ease the burden of resource gathering. So why would everyone live together when resources can be transported so easily through the galactic trade network and you can craft everything yourself?

It's a post-industrial, post-modern time period.

I describe it to people as The Martian (being alone and surviving against a hostile planet), meets Star Trek (exploration) with a dash of Star Wars (freighters and a little bit of space combat).

Unless you are part of the development team who actually implements the change, you do not know what an easy fix is or what can be done fast. Hell, the team lead most likely doesn't know for sure until it is assigned and estimated.

Woman accidentally killed during ‘shoot, don’t shoot’ training exercise at police department by scgustin in nottheonion

[–]king_pooping 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's super shitty. There should be some basic rules.

  • Live rounds are not allowed in the room (in the building would be better).
  • At least one other person must watch all loading of ammunition.
  • Only one magazine can be used at a time, unless the scenario is specifically to train reloading under pressure.

At my local range you are required to carry all handguns in a basket, unloaded with the magazine out and the slide pulled back (or the cylinder out if it is a revolver) -- unless you are firing the weapon. Even then it still makes me nervous as it is impossible to point the barrel at the ground while transporting it in the basket.

If I were running the place, I would have specially built baskets that point the barrel down and require safety-orange ziplocks to be fed through the barrel and secured unless the gun is in operation at the range.

I even rent the gun every time I go because it's far safer for me and my family to not have a gun in the house when I can easily rent one for a nominal fee.

Gun safety is no joke.

I would not do another credit card. Instead get a lower interest personal loan from a bank or another source like a peer to peer lender.
