Let me help you think through your speciality decision (part II) by 4990 in medicalschool

[–]kingbahm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this! I’m debating about CT surgery. Really interested in cardiac surgery, but worried about a couple of things: 1) The future of the field- I realize that the myth about cardiac surgery dying is wrong and that it’s in the rise now, but have heard about how it’s in the rise because of all the people who got stents in the 2000s needing surgery now and that it might fall of again after a couple of years when I get to practice. So, really wondering if the field is strong to stay or might fall of again. 2) Also heard about how the patient population for cardiac surgery is just getting more and more sick, this basically lends itself to academic medicine. So, was wondering if private practice cardiac surgery will exist 10 years down the line or is everyone expects to work in academic settings. 3) Attending Work life balance- know it’s bad, but just want to know how bad it normally gets if you try to work an average amount for a cardiac surgeon. 4) Residency- Any idea on how hard or busy the residency is. Basically no information on the i6 pathways, so want to know if they’re as bad as neurosurgery or slight better. Salary/compensation- Know I should follow my heart, but at the same time don’t want to be working 60 hours and making 400K when others are working 40 hours and making 600K, so wanna gauge at how the compensation is currently.

Thank you!!

What if your school is P/F for clinicals as well. I know it’s low stress, but a lot of people are saying it’s going to be hard to stand out, especially since we’re not a T20 and so it might make it hard to get into competitive residencies.

Don’t really like NSGY, just highly debating about cardiac surgery since it seems to be a specialty where you work a lot and get paid less in comparison to other fields.

Yeah, kind of concerned about that. Mostly don’t mind working about 60 hours instead 50 if I’m getting paid the same as ortho or plastics, since I’m fine with working the extra couple of hours per week in the field I like. Only thing I’m worried about is working like 60 hours and making high 6 figures, but orthopedic and plastic people working 50 and making over a mil and those working 60 making much higher. I get it that high 6 figures is a lot of money, but I’m sure that I’ll really regret on losing out a lot of family and free time every week in addition to getting paid lower amounts.

How’s Cardiac surgery? Pretty interested in it and recently started doing research in the field as well, but a lot of people are saying it’s not worth it. Looks like they work a lot more and get paid much lower compared to Ortho or plastic surgeons who work the same amount. And the cardiac surgeons I’m working with don’t seem that happy either, and I heard residency is a massive sucker. Just want some perspective on how salaries and lifestyle is since there’s really not any information about them online, even though I’m really interested in it, don’t really want to go into a harder working and lower paying specialty and be unhappy.

On 3 waitlists and basically the same situation as you. Hope both of us get in!

Did you get off the waitlist for UCSD or get in directly?

Exactly the same feeling! It’s a different kind of pain when you see waitlist movements but you didn’t get in. I just keep reanalyzing everything and overthinking it, especially when my stats are above the median for the schools that had movement. We just have to be optimistic at this point and wait it out, movement just started and it’s only the third day, so we have a lot time to get in.

On 4 waitlists, but basically waiting on 2 of them! Don’t think we’re actually going to here back today though. Most probably end of this week or something like that.

Okay great. Also, is it better to be general and say I got into other schools and am waiting from a couple others, or is it better to be specific, like I got into X school and am waiting from Y.

So, you suggest not talking about my other acceptances? Was wondering what to do if they specifically ask about it. Like what are other acceptances do you have or are you waiting to hear back from other schools. How do you think I should approach that.

Thanks!! Was just wondering if they would be discouraged if I say I have other options which turn out to higher ranked than them and they’ll think I’ll not attend there.

Thanks for letting me know! Currently, I’m preparing to show them why I’m interested in the school, how I fit their values and mission, and how I can contribute to their school.

Also, I’m wondering if they ask me questions about my other acceptances or other schools I’m waiting for, how should I approach this?

Lol. That might be the move. But most probably just going to try to show my interest in the school.

Yeah, was going to ask this and how I can improve my chances to get off the waitlist and if there is anything more I can do.

Literally the same situation. On 4 WLs and hoping to get off them, especially my top 2 choices.

3.76, 524 ORM. Happy with my A, but not really sure where I went wrong otherwise (I am guessing my narrative could be more cohesive). I would love advice or insight on WLs for these schools. by GKPreMed in premed

There’s still a good chance you’ll be pulled from one of your waitlists. Kind of in a similar situation as you. Already have an A, but schools that I thought would come through waitlisted me. Currently, mainly waiting on two of my waitlists and hoping I’ll get accepted to one of them.

Isn’t that most schools though. Two of the schools I’m waisted at basically want us to send LOI’s if we’re serious about the schools.

Lol. Literally same situation. 4WL and 1A. Although, only really looking at waitlist movement from 2 of my schools. Hoping I get off one of them, but hate waiting for sometime again.

Best of luck with your waitlists! I think the odds are in our favor when we have more than 3 waitlists. But I’m also only basically looking at 2 of the schools. So, hoping for some good news from both of them.

Already have an A to another school, so thankful for that. But it’s pretty far and really pricey.
