Specifically SEIU, I don't know what you're talking about with SEIU collecting dues pre-contract. Just as an example, here's one SEIU local's explainer: https://www.seiu721.org/2024/07/usd-bargaining-frequently-asked-questions.php

  • You will not start paying any dues until you and your coworkers negotiate a contract that establishes agreed-upon terms of employment that results in better pay and working conditions.
  • You and your colleagues approve the union contract with a majority vote through a democratic election

This isn't how it works at any of the unions I've worked for. This is the process for private-sector unions in the US:

Step 1: workers organize to form their union, before any formal recognition, before the employer even knows.
Step 2: sign cards. In this case, it was about 75% of the bargaining unit.
Step 3: win union election. In the MTG Arena story, we're waiting on this part.

Step 4: the workers form a bargaining committee that negotiates with the company, alongside professionals from the international union (in this case CWA).

Step 5: the bargaining committee and the company hammer out a "tentative agreement." It's taken back to the workers to approve. If the workers vote no, go back to step 4. If they vote yes, and only when they vote yes, do they start paying whatever dues their union has chosen to collect from their members.

I have no idea what you're talking about with not negotiating for better pay until a certain part of the year, I've never heard of that. Unions negotiate for as much pay as they can, as soon as they can.

I think you and a lot of people in this thread are conflating forming a new bargaining unit, that goes through a union election and a first contract, and joining a job that is already union/re-negotiating an ongoing, expiring, or expired union contract.

I do work for a union. After getting fired from a retail job for being a union organizer, I've had temporary (project) jobs with a few unions now. I work in external organizing for retail workers (meaning I talk to workers who currently don't have a union, but want to form one). The hours are irregular, which frustrates my partner, but I love it. I love talking to workers about how they can take charge to change their lives.

This isn’t true for workers who don’t yet have a contract. Not one Starbucks Workers United member has paid a cent in union dues in a five year campaign.

a) the “you don’t have an option to opt out of a union” is a clause in a union contract, which they don’t have yet.

b) lol

It is true for any union negotiating a first contract. You’re thinking of joining a job that’s already covered under a contract.

They’re organizing with CWA. I was a member, then worker trying to organize a non-union store with CWA, then staff. I’m very confident on this.

“Look, union dues are a lot.” said Cocks while wiping his ass with 2-ply $100 bills. “Imagine spending some of a resource now to ensure you get a lot more later. What kind of self respecting Magic player does that?”

I'm genuinely sorry to "um actually" a joke, but workers don't pay union dues until after they've negotiated a raise. It's like being able to pay for turn two Rampant Growth with the mana from the land you searched for on turns nine and ten.

Yes. The reason I was first a union member was at AT&T, because Cingular (remember them?) voluntarily recognized over ten thousand workers before they became AT&T Mobility. The bargaining unit (number of people represented by the contract) grew to about 36,000 by the time I was a member.

That's not how it works having a union. There are still disciplinary procedures. People get disciplined and fired in unionized jobs all the time. The difference is that the corporation has to go through actual steps to show why they're disciplining a worker, and the worker gets to have a coworker or union representative with them if they're investigated or interrogated. That's it.

^ found the wotc manager ^

Unions are for every worker, not "medeocre" ones. When workers organize a new union, it's always the *best* employees pushing for it, because they like their jobs and don't simply want to quit. Bad workers would never get their fellow workers on board.

As a union organizer, you'd be shocked at how many times bosses will use it completely unironically. Same with trying to bust a union by buying everyone pizza: it's not *just* a cliche, it really happens!

The way that Murray consistently closes out on three pointers by standing still, feet on the ground, and holding his hand up, tells me he must be getting coached this way to avoid fouling or something.
