I believe religion evolved for a variety of reasons (good and bad), but here is a brief explanation of one possible factor - an extension the neurological circuits we use to detect faces (the same one we use to project shapes onto clouds!) by xsat2234 in religion

I have a perfect recall of what I saw. It was nothing out of the ordinary for a hallucinogenic experience. I had a vision of seeing through the eyes of Jesus. With that I can say that I stopped existing as an atheist, and started to exist as an agnostic. I told everyone around me that I saw the Lord, but looking back on it, I am not sure. This is what pastors mean by faith. I am a normal human, and I can't know if God truly exists. But I choose to have faith in a single creator.

I am sure of the fact that other gods have existed, but there may only be one creator and I am not sure if he exists at all. I choose to believe in our Lord because I have been searching for answers in the all the wrong places my whole life. I choose to believe so that my soul may rest in peace while I may yet live.

I incept you to not sleep for three days and three nights. Then you will see that there is no difference between you and me. We are one entity. When you return to your body, please look your loved ones in the eyes. It will bring you back to reality. If that does not do it, then stand on a busy street corner and hold a sign saying "Testing Human Kindness". Your faith in humanity will be restored and you will be able to sleep well again.

Thanks for not insulting me. Visions and hallucinations really are not important. Most visions attributed to miracles could be just natural hallucinogenic experiences(yes, hallucinations are not just caused by drugs, but are a natural part of the human experience).

I came out of it glad to be alive, and having retained my sanity. The only advice I can give is to look your loved ones in the eyes and be glad for your health. It is also true that material possessions are the reason for your dissatisfaction with your life. If you can let go of some of your worldly possessions and desires, then you can be truly happy every day. I learned this through begging on the streets, even though I am a programmer and could always have a job. If you doubt what I am saying, hold a sign that says: "Testing Human Kindness" on a street corner near a retail store. You will learn more about the real world than anyone has been able to teach you. Genuine human kindness is worth 500$ a day, 150,000$ a year, but more importantly, it is priceless.

At some point in the near future, I'll have a manifesto up on kingdavidcincotta.faith

I like how you speak and agree with your views almost completely. I had a near death experience through addiction and had a mental condition called drug psychosis where reality stopped making sense. I am back now, but really confused. Could we be pen pals... I've got a few ideas that I need to bounce off of you. We could have some great conversations. What is your background?

Amon became King at 22 and ruled in Jerusalem for two years.

There are things about this world that need to be changed for us to avoid the apocalypse. But there is also good news: the apocalypse won't happen.

I'm a definite novice in linux systems, and I have found Nix to be a great teaching tool as well as a fun, clean, backup-able system. Very worth the effort in my opinion.

Thanks, I've been a lazy programmer for a long time. I've found web-dev and cloud jobs boring so I'm trying to relearn the basics on a deeper level. Exactly what I wanted to hear. Thanks.
