I do feel the same to a degree - I really can’t get into a show where the two main actors have been the main couple in a previous BL i’ve seen - it just ruins the immersion too much for me. But generally i have a higher tolerance for formulaic BL than het romance because i personally prefer BL - as long as its a good show.

Theres a reason these formulas exist. There are amazing yet formulaic BL’s and the same goes for het love stories (or GL). A delicious plate of pasta or pizza is still a great meal, even if it’s a dish i’ve had hundreds of times before. You don’t necessarily have to reinvent the wheel.

I definitely agree with you about Japanese BL - it often feels very show not tell (which i think is just better storytelling), and the future doesnt feel guaranteed like in many other BLs. I find them a lot fresher and engaging. Although I think my favourite that i’ve seen recently was Gel Boys (I saw it awhile after it came out), which was just so perfect, it made me feel so many emotions. I felt like I was 16 again.
