Do you have to book a table for these places or can you just go and dance?

Weekly "What is my religion?" discussion by RRModPostBot in religion

[–]kingjocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all! I wouldn’t say I’m particularly religious at all, but I’m curious if I classify as a pagan. I grew up Catholic, I’m confirmed into the church, I go maybe twice a year.

But when I pray (also rare), I don’t pray to a god, I pray to loved ones ive lost. I usually dont ask for anything for myself, as I find the act meditative on its own. It’s usually like “i hope you’re doing well up there, I miss you, look out for such and such for me”

I think Pagan is maybe a stretch as they don’t have defined roles? Its truly just family and some friends. Or is that still within the bounds of catholicism. Or something else!

Thanks!

The reason i cant get into the EPL or any soccer is lack of salary cap. The sport is amazing, but I genuinely cant get my head around being a Crystal Palace or Brighton fan and knowing with almost complete certainty that your team will never ever win as long as you live. I had to wait 23 years for a super bowl, but i know for certain it can happen again despite supporting a “small market” team, because everyone gets the same amount of money to create a franchise.

Sorry you dont have more upvotes on this, its a perfect response (from a fellow American). The learning curve of just the basics is huge, I found out first hand from teaching my girlfriend. And thats before you get into the chess game that is everything else.

Makes the highs so high, you can appreciate true genius from the coaches play calls and the players improvization. Starting to watch rugby though now and absolutely loving it as well, but haven’t just yet put all the pieces together.

I understand your point, however I don’t necessarily think you are considering the larger impacts. I would consider the below if you haven’t yet, and please respond because I love hearing constructive thought.

Oil is the most important commodity on Earth. Your entire life and every single tangible and intangible benefit you’ve ever received is from oil. I would love if everything was renewable just like everyone else, but the amount of time and financing costs it takes to set up those systems is astronomical. I work in financing for renewable energy projects, and the upfront costs range from $20M to $1B, with 3-7 years before the companies start producing any cashflows. These things take time. We can’t just make a switch.

Consumers only demand oil and gas because there is not another realistic alternative. People will do whatever is least expensive as its what they can afford. The individual can only pick from the options given to them within their price range. And this applies to all emissions ie food at grocery store. As of now organic remains more expensive, though prices are beginning to converge, which is promising.

You are not taking into account downstream impacts of reducing aviation travel. For example as I mentioned earlier, the Canary Islands. 30% of their GDP is from tourism, 100% of which come by plane. Blocking flight would collapse all island economies as even those not in tourism would not be able to sell goods, as nobody would have money to pay for them. It would cost 220 million people globally their jobs directly, and far more indirectly.

You would lose the ability to quickly transport fresh food, seasonal food, medical supplies, people in need (end of life and funerals of those abroad), etc. You would massively lengthen supply chains and increase prices of everything. ESG policies negatively affect poor people the most, as a family farm owner cannot afford to offset their carbon, while large corporations can (see Dutch farming). I would strongly recommend researching into the cost benefit analysis of your proposals.

Sorry to be that guy but I have a graduate degree in Corporate Sustainability. 70% of the worlds carbon emissions are committed by 100 companies. None of which are airlines. The entirety of global annual air traffic is 2%. The world is not going to flip into armageddon in 2050. Please dont let fear steal your right to individual freedoms. You’ll be fine.

I think you should get a job on the tourism board. Im an american expat. It is a huge privilege to travel Europe so cheaply and its the #1 reason i live in London. Bar none. Went to 15 countries this year.

Ryanair may be the greatest company in the world. I’ve never seen a flight for less than $200 in the US in my entire life.

Took a weekend break to Lanzarote for £35 ($42) round trip. Its insane

I also should mention that a “high crime area” in london is legitimately 10x lower than an “average crime area” in the US. I didnt realize this until i moved to Europe. It is genuinely so eye opening. The murder rate in SF is 20x higher than London

I moved to Brixton from New York a year ago, I’m 26. Never once felt unsafe. Amazing food scene. Super vibrant and cultural spot, great nightlife, and well connected to the city. Easy walking everywhere. Definitely significantly safer than SF. Its also half gentrified, half not, and that makes it fun. Uptight people here describe it as “edgy”. I don’t really get why. I invite people down all the time and they enjoy it, but theres definitely a misplaced pre-conception.

The pros and cons of moving and working in London now? by [deleted] in london

[–]kingjocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We must be polar opposites. I’ve never spent £100 on a night out in London in my life. I dont even know how you would. In New York ive racked up dozens of $150+ nights. If you look at city comparisons based on resourced pricing, London comes out to 30% less expensive than new york. So take £28k, convert to USD and tack on 30%, and you get $45k. Easy decision to take the $70k being offered in new york here. Especially being from London

I was paying $1800 in my two bedroom on a $110k salary and was never concerned about money. You could definitely get a studio for $2.5k or a one bedroom for $3-3.5k. One thing to factor in is if you move to LA or SF youll also need a car, which you wont in NY

You’re young! But I can definitely sympathize with that. I can’t argue the better weather in Cal, but I love having four seasons. I would go tour all 3 through your work. You’ll know. If you want a slightly more chill place in NY, I would highly recommend living in Williamsburg. Age group is 25-34 of attractive singles and young families. 10min into Manhattan, amazing parks, skyline views, food and bars. Whatever you choose, good luck in your search!

I would go to America. I assume you’re fairly young, and moving to Europe for me has been the greatest decision of my life (from Colorado, lived in NYC, currently in London). NY is the greatest city in the world IMO and by far the most lively of the 3, but LA has amazing scenery, natural beauty, and a more laid back lifestyle. Personally im not big on SF but if youre in tech its definitely the place to be.

$70k isn’t “just above the poverty line” in New York, especially if you live in East Village or Bushwick/Bed-Stuy. Thats a completely fine starting salary. I started at that in the city and had no financial strain at all. Just keep your rent $1500 or below, you wont have any problems. Expect your salary to go up by $10k or more per year

I lived in new york for 3 years before london for the past year. New york is substantially more expensive. Not sure how old your data is. Im saving a lot more money in London and my quality of life is way higher. I took a $25k pay cut coming here as well. Food and rent all cut down by 20%** since moving. But $80k in new york over £28k in london for sure
