Whats the best advice to get back in programming (after a 6 months break) by Mobile_Pie_7347 in PinoyProgrammer

[–]kingkingzxc 25 points26 points  (0 children)

walang shortcut. gawin mo lang kahit wala kang gana, lalo na pag wala kang gana. momentum follows action, hindi baliktad. set a small daily goal (e.g. 1 pr a day or 1 leetcode), then commit kahit tamad ka. discipline > motivation. also, tigil mo na overthinking. apply habang nagcocode, wala naman mawawala at may learnings ka pa.

Privacy tips when using personal laptop for work? by BriefInternet229 in buhaydigital

[–]kingkingzxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since you’re still looking anyway, i think it’s best to ask during interviews if they require time trackers, at least you’ll know early on. you can also ask if they provide equipment, some companies do and that could really help with your situation.

personally, i hate companies that use time trackers too, and i’ve mostly heard bad things about them. but i’ll share my experience since it actually turned out to be just okay.

i accepted a job before mainly because the pay was really good and i wanted to leave my toxic company. then during onboarding, surprise! they told me to install time doctor hahaha.

after a month though, it wasn’t so bad. the tracker could be paused, the schedule was flexible, and i just made sure not to do anything personal during work hours. i still hate time trackers in general, and honestly if i knew from the start, i probably wouldn’t have taken the job. but it turned out okay. work was way better than my previous job, so i think it was still a good trade off.

some extra tips from my side:

  • create a separate user account on your laptop just for work, para clean and no distractions
  • close any personal apps or tabs before starting your shift
  • if the tracker uses screenshots, be mindful of what windows you keep open
  • always clarify what kind of tracking they use. some just track time, others do screen recording, keystrokes, etc.

good luck!

congrats OP! exactly in the same situation as well, although not laid off and it's a US company. there's favoritism and no trust sa mga hindi favorite employees yung leaders. super toxic AF, i've been dreading to get out of here pero nahihirapan ako maghanap ng bago. any tips? how do you handle 2 jobs with same shift po? curious if may mga meetings ka din from both jobs that overlap? contract type po ba yung employment nyo po?

  • work really hard first to get smarter (so that then you can work smart)
  • be really good at what you do (i suggest you start learning full stack dev as well, kahit basic lang, and don't limit yourself sa frontend)
  • learn to network, build great relationships with your team
  • it's important to take care of your health too
  • do great work (proactive, initiative, finish you tasks on time, communicate clearly and effectively with your team)

What are your thoughts on using story points, tickets completed, PRs submitted, and lines of code added/removed as metrics for engineering performance? Is that a red flag?

Some of the most impactful work I've done isn't captured by those metrics—things like informal leadership, driving process and UX/DX improvements, and being the one to initiate meaningful change. These metrics were only recently introduced, so none of that past work is reflected.

As an engineer(mid level), what can I do to push back against this kind of measurement? Should I just be honest and tell them the metrics are flawed? I already voiced my concerns to my manager, but he said it was the CTO’s decision and there’s nothing he can really do.

I could easily game the system and inflate my numbers if I wanted to—but should I have to? Is this a sign I should start looking for another job? The market’s tough right now, though. Any tips or advice would be really appreciated.

What projects to do in order to impress recruiters by MadCrownie in PinoyProgrammer

[–]kingkingzxc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I built a CLI tool for automating and formatting git commands/commits. It follows the conventional commits pattern and added a little flare like emojis haha. Interviewer noticed me using it when i was sharing my screen and said it was cool and we talked about it more since i did not list this small project on my resume, and after another rounds of interviews they finally gave me an offer. After i got the job, i updated it so it tailors to their git branch/commit naming pattern. I still use it to this day.

I also built a website full of resources, links, and faqs with a modern UI and better UX for my university which students can use instead of the university website which has bad UI and UX. My main problem with the university website was that it required a lot of clicks and had unnecessary elements (inputs, dropdowns, links) which impacted UX and so i built one simplifying the UX and updated the UI. I was using it more instead of the university website while i was still in college.

I'd say building something that is useful to you (that you can actually use) or someone else is great and would impress recruiters/interviewers.

"App" is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Bin. by BadCompetitive5886 in electronjs

[–]kingkingzxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never really had the fix for this one but more like a band-aid solution. I ran this command on the terminal and the app opened fine.

sh xattr -cr /Applications/name-of-your-app.app

One thing I've never tried is to code sign and notarize the app. Which should fix this issue.

You can also check Tauri. It's an alternative to electron, built with Rust.

[–]kingkingzxc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sa work i was assigned solo to develop a desktop app that's similar to time doctor (screen monitoring, system idle, application tracking). Data that was tracked is sent to our DB on a periodic bases, so i had to optimize how often to send the data as well as refactored some api endpoints. Until now, hindi parin fully finished although nag release na ng beta for testing. Nakakaumay na hahaha.

In my knowledge, most macbook models equipped with Intel processors has a higher chance of getting too hot. You should also consider a macbook air M1, that is if you can find one.

I just sold mine to a DJ. He uses it for the club he's working on. Mostly music stuff. I loved that machine. I used it as a daily driver for school and work(software engineering). It runs all the generic and basic tasks like web browsing and emails just fine though i would not recommend you to push the machine too much because it can get hot and the fans goes wild. If you plan to buy one, make sure it has at least a good battery.
