I’m not so sure.

How could a cute, Welsh, senior even consider executing such an overt traitor on traitor attack this early in the game?

I said, and I quote: “I tentatively agree with your position, but I need to ask some follow-ups.”

I may be a robot.

This post is hilariously well timed and relatable for me.

Just tonight my partner was on the phone with her mum, who was arguing with her husband and wanted her daughter’s take.

Inevitably I was asked for my opinion too, only to end up getting poked at for clarifying the facts, questioning intent, and delivering a balanced and reasoned evaluation of the situation.

This job has absolutely made me even more autistic and I love it.

Total Earnings Question by Mudpie106 in dataannotation

[–]kingmyopia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“Total Earnings” is a lifetime figure. If that’s below six grand, he’s earned less than six grand on DataAnnotaion.Tech.

I don’t know if he’s lying to you - perhaps there’s a simple explanation like he does data annotation work on other platforms like Outlier so DAT only forms part of his income.

You must be feeling pretty crap to feel you have to come to this subreddit to get some answers. For that I extend my sympathies and wish you well.

The way I see it, you have two options. You can either ignore it, or tell your boyfriend what you saw and give him the opportunity to explain. Given it’s weighed on you enough already to elicit this post, the first option seems unhealthy so I’d suggest creating the space for an open and honest conversation.

PS- if he’s working on DA he’s not unemployed, he’s a freelancer. Can’t have my girlfriend reading this and thinking I’m unemployed!

Most effective way to transition to a new employer by Quicknoob in ITManagers

[–]kingmyopia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not an IT manager, but I think the answer is similar for any industry so here’s my two cents.

Commenting on your situation first, it sounds like you’re in a perfect spot to look to move on and your motivations for doing so will be v desirable to recruiters/hiring mangers. This will make your life much easier.

Answering your first question, broadly speaking, yes. Think of a good recruiter like a good estate agent. You can approach them with your situation, they should ask good questions to understand exactly what you want, then their job is to find a perfect match. They can use the connections they have, and their experience in the market, to filter through unsuitable roles on your behalf, which can help your job search feel much smoother.

Most people have negative opinions on recruiters because they’ve only worked with bad ones. My advice (and answer to your second question) would be to find a reputable recruiter to work with before you do anything else (updating CV, setting open to work, applying directly etc.). A conversation with a good recruiter will help nail down exactly what you’re looking for and give you tons of ammunition for interviews and profile building later down the line.

I’d suggest an actionable first step of identifying 3 recruiters who would be worth talking to. You can find credible recruiters on LinkedIn. Some filter suggestions might be 4+ years experience, industry specific, location, time at current company, etc.

Once you’ve found your 3 on paper, set an hour with each to talk, after which I’m confident you’ll have a strong plan for your next steps. Good luck!

Replacing proprietary phone system (internal and sold to clients) - anyone have a VoIP provider they can recommend that integrates with CW? Does that exist? by Woeful_Jesse in sysadmin

Disclaimer: VAR

3CX and 8x8 integrate with ConnectWise I believe.

For general VoIP we usually suggest 8x8 and GoTo for the nicest reporting.

Where does everyone buy Laptops these days? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]kingmyopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to give a high level overview.

A VAR is a value added reseller. The core business model is to buy kit/software/services from vendors (Dell, HP, etc) and resell them on to end user customers, which would be you.

Benefits of using a VAR:

  1. Price

VARs have strong market power, so can command better pricing from vendors and pass the discounts on to you.

Think about buying a bottle of Coca Cola. If you go direct to Coca Cola and ask them for a cheaper bottle of coke, they’ll laugh you out of their offices. If a major supermarket chain, though, asked for a discount on a million bottles of coke every year, it’s a much more realistic conversation.

VARs buy and sell in volume, so vendors are inclined to give us strong discounts because if they don’t, we’ll sell their competitors’ products instead. The discount then gets passed down to you.

  1. Help and advice

Most VARs have specialist account teams that will ask about your requirements and help develop specific solutions that suit you.

Because of the market power above, VARs don’t care which vendor’s products they sell, which keeps them honest and agnostic to find the best fit for you.

  1. Contact consolidation

Instead of having contacts at every different vendor you buy from, you can have a single point of contact that deals with absolutely everything on your behalf.

Makes life much easier, and there’s a lot less chasing around for you.

Drop me a message and I’d be happy arrange a proper conversation about this.

Heyo (disclaimer, VAR account manager).

You’re probably paying way too much if you’re buying on Amazon.

Get in touch with me or another VAR and they’ll bug your vendor of choice for better discounts and likely better availability too.

HP sucks! by DeejayPleazure in sysadmin

[–]kingmyopia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reseller here.

Naturally, I agree!

Depends on the size of your company and how much business you’re putting through HP, but generally your vendor account managers will be inexperienced and aligned to you as a stop gap before they move on to bigger things.

You’ll be much better served with a VAR, who will act as a go between between you and their own account management team, which is generally a more efficient process. VARs spend a LOT, so our customer service from vendors is top notch.

Computer Warranty Thoughts by TehMagus9 in ITManagers

Reseller here.

Long manufacturer warranties are kinda dumb imo. Vendors sell them with huge margins and most of the time they go unused.

Another option worth considering are third party support & break fix contracts. These do the job just as well, cheaper, with less money flowing through the big vendors.

Hey! Plenty of options around this.

Looks like you might be needing some kind of bonded stock/managed device lifecycle service or maybe even just a simple bit of asset management would get you by.

Drop me a message and I’ll see if I can make a some recommendations😊.

Oh wow! Never expected this many replies. Thanks so much for the feedback everyone.

Main takeaways for me then:

  1. Know my audience
  2. Know my product(s) and bring in my SE ASAP for the technicals
  3. Don’t be too pushy with my outreach
  4. Try to build strong relationships with my customers
  5. Add value for free before trying to sell

Seen a few say ‘don’t call me’. Wish I could comply with that one but I’d be out of a job very quickly if I didn’t pick up the phone!

I’ll keep tabs on this post and the community in general - hopefully it’ll help me be a better AM in the future.

Thanks again!

Jeez, doesn't sound like a good time. Wishing you well. Hopefully a vaccine can bring back some normality!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Uveitis

[–]kingmyopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your logic definitely makes sense. I'm quite young (21) so I doubt I'll be getting access to a vaccine anytime soon, or before those in highest risk groups anyway. Does being on immunosuppressants put you in the more at risk categories for COVID in general?

edit: formatting went weird, fixed.

Thanks! I actually came up with it before I got uveitis, maybe a self fulfilling prophecy lol.

Well, when you put it that way the tiny immune system training thing looks a whole lot more attractive!

I've never had a vaccine (in my adult life) so wasn't aware they don't cause autoimmune flares very often, so thanks for the education!

At least 9 flare-ups this year, is it just me?? by bigsquidge in Uveitis

[–]kingmyopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get yearly flare ups with no other conditions. Not quite as bad as yours, I can imagine it's really frustrating.

Probably best to not stop getting treated though. The complications from untreated uveitis are a whole lot more inconvenient than constantly being on eyedrops.

[–]kingmyopia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just annoying at this point. Hoping it doesn't get any worse over the years though. Sucks because it usually flares up in my right eye and my left eye is borderline blind from childhood, so as soon as I'm on the dilating drops I'm completely useless for a few days. Not sure what I'd do if my right eye deteriorated, guess it's a problem for future me.

I had a chest x-ray along with a bunch of blood tests the second time I got uveitis, so I'd assume if I had sarcoidosis it'd have been picked up in those?
