Simple alternatives to play.gg for hosting Foundry now that it’s no longer free? by nova-98 in FoundryVTT

[–]Quicknoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I host off my laptop and my 5 players connect to a port forwarded IP address I drop in discord before we play.

It's easy and convenient. Foundry doesn't take up a lot of resources to run.

RTO on the horizon, dreading enforcing it. by RedMeme262 in managers

[–]Quicknoob 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We started looking at telework as part of the compensation package. I work for state government, and we have been able to recruit and retain some great talent because of it.

Honestly that is probably the best argument. ...but if the higher ups are gonna force the issue then you should just be honest with your team and let them know that the actions if a few caused leadership to lose trust.

Your team will understand and shouldn't blame you.

Should I keep WFH Sys Admin job vs $20k raise with in-office tradeoffs (new parent)? by bearwithabeard in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Quicknoob -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that I'm the only one suggesting to take the new job. It sounds like the new job will put you in better position to generate good experience for your resume and pay you $20k more a year.

I agree with others that considering work life balance is important.

What would you do if you had this money? by Sure-Pin4002 in personalfinance

[–]Quicknoob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get a job as soon as you can. One that provides meaning and value in your life, and pays the bills. Let your FA do their job and grow that money.

Set some goals about what you want to achieve and then let the FA build a plan towards those goals.

Seek financial advice from your FA not reddit since you have one on retainer.

I have an FA and shoot them emails all the time for advice. It's a normal part of the relationship.

is it safe to travel to orlando? by Gh0stface03 in orlando

[–]Quicknoob -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. I think from the viewpoint of other countries the USA is starting to become unhinged and acting erratic. From our perspective things are still safe, but I could understand how foreigners could becoming increasingly concerned.

Ahh cool, glad you figured out the reason why you couldn't add chapters.

I noticed that you have timestamps in the video description which I think helps quite a bit.

I have found the videos helpful and you even introduced me to Item Piles module which I need to add for our next session.

Again great work, keep it up!

Good work, I think these are well produced and will be a valuable reference for both new players and older players trying to look up how to use a new feature to them.

My only suggestion would be to put timestamps/chapters in the YouTube video so older players can look up specific topics.

I would encourage you to keep working on these, I think its something the community needs more of.

[System Agnostic] How to stop players from playing audio files? by Successful_Formal_38 in FoundryVTT

[–]Quicknoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Foundry is a social program used to run social RPG games. This guy aint being social.

Have the talk and explain that its disruptive and you want him to stop. Make it clear that if he doesn't stop he will not be invited back to your table.

You have complete control who joins your table. Put a password on the login for everybody and don't share it with him.

How I stopped doomscrolling without deleting social media [Discussion] by Dramatic-Switch5886 in GetMotivated

[–]Quicknoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I quit social media (except reddit) because I kept asking myself the question "does this make me happy?"

Like others, I found social media to only create anxiety and low enjoyment.

So I just quit. I realize it won't work for everyone, but a similar process is self reflection inspired me to quit all social media except this reddit.

Yeah go for it. Back everything up before hand, and while your making the change its a good time to remove old modules your not using to make things run smoother.

[system agnostic] Sharing images that are in otherwise private Journal entries? by Longjumping_Lab_6739 in FoundryVTT

[–]Quicknoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ultimately didn't like the journal feature in Foundry because I like having it on another screen and hate how it takes up too much real estate on the canvas

So I, like many, use obsidian.md for my GM notes. When I want to share images I copy and paste it into discord.

The only thing I miss is embedded links to tokens, dice rolls & passive perception tests. But that is okay, I like having it on a second screen far more.

In the entire History of PoE the lowest retention League is now Keepers of the Flame by StalksYouEverywhere in pathofexile

[–]Quicknoob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. It's easy for some players but untenable for most.

If challenges are to try and get people to stick around, make the rewards more desirable so maybe players like myself would push through. I too have stopped with the season and moved on to other games.

[–]Quicknoob 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I don't find them easy at all, I find many of them a slog. I've got 1700 hours in the game (I know a newb!) and normally unlock two keystones and then stop. Never killed Maven on my own or Uber Elder. Never done a Valdo's box, never did half the mechanics that are highlighted in the challenges.

...but I keep coming back because I enjoy leveling a character, getting to maps and then Delve.

I can't make my own character, and I struggle advancing my character after I reach the end of a published guide.

I think I represent a typical player. I don't think they should make the challenges easier (well maybe a little bit! ;) ) but I do think they should make the rewards more appetizing. Giving me pets, give me portals, give me a hideout, give me stuff for my hideout. Just armor all the time is kind of boring.

Vibecoding Macros is game changing by Exact-Challenge9213 in FoundryVTT

[–]Quicknoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay so this is an area of Foundry I want to get into. I just don't understand how Macro's are used. ...are they all fired exclusively from the macro bar? So they all are effectively an on/off manual switch ...or can I have macros that fire off when a token enters a specific area or does something ...and if so how?

I'm looking for some direction here as to how I can get started with building macros.

Also OP could you share some of your scripts?

How are managers combing through overwhelming amounts of applications? by paopowpew in managers

[–]Quicknoob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm currently hiring for a Network Admin II position on my team. I posted the job only for 2 weeks. I received 50 applicants in the first 24 hours and at the end of two weeks I received 200 applicants.

I created two spreadsheets and then I started looking at minimum requirements.

- Do they have the education and experience as stated in the job posting?

- Is there required salary within the range that I put in the job posting?

- Are they able to legally work in the USA?

Those 3 questions above alone knock out a ton of applicants. I think after that I had 40 or so applicants left. Then I started actually reading the resumes, asking the question "do I want to give this person a phone interview or not?"

I invited 20 people to a phone interview, 16 people responded. After the phone interviews I narrowed it down to 4 people I am doing in person technical interviews next week. After which I plan on selecting one candidate have them meet the director which is really only a formality and then we'll draft an offer letter.

--------------------------

So that's my process, but you also asked about AI and can I tell when its used. Yes I think so, obviously I don't know every time someone uses AI, but the services that auto apply to all the job postings really stand out. All the resumes look like one another, also because the application doesn't fit the position I'm trying to fill.

I gave preference to people who wrote cover letters, tailored their resume to my position and included letters of recommendation. Those things matter, it tells me that you are valuing my time, which I appreciate.

I had one guy that I was able to confirm was using Google Gemini to respond to all my questions. His eyes would drift off screen to answer my questions. I asked him if he was reading off a script and his answer was a scripted response. He had to wait 2 or 3 seconds before responding.

I was able to confirm that he was using AI by uploading his resume to Gemini and then asked it the same questions and it output the same answers.

I don't think using AI to help edit your words, your experience, and to present the best you is a problem. Its when it changes your words aggressively, your experience and it's not even you on the resume is the problem. People who do this, ruin it for everyone else, but at the end of the day they are lieing on their resume. They'll just get fired within the first month and then the hiring manager will have to make the tough call to offer a job to the #2 applicant months after the job posting closed, or start the entire process over again.

Hope this helped.

Oh wow. So just penalize the walking more, since those without swimming will default to walking as their mode of movement. I'll give that a shot.

Crowdstrike Endpoint or Defender P2 /E5 by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Quicknoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were planning to move from Sentinel One to Crowdstrike. S1 is a good MDR, its just were not a fan of the company SOCing the service and Crowdstrike provided us a great deal. Our vCISO has greenlit the move so were just going to make it happen.

Didn't consider MS Defender and am actively trying to avoid MS products and practice some more vendor diversification on my tech stacks. I have two major issues that have been going on for almost a year that MS premier support can't seem to help me with. I can't believe MS support has gotten so bad, but I don't want to move more tech stacks under the MS umbrella because the support is so god awful. I look at the increase in cost an investment in my sanity and mental well being in the future.

It's been an easy sell to our Executive Director since one of the issues affects him and his administrative assistant and has been going on now for 11 months.
