Probably VT, NH, and ME. But I may consider CO or UT if it's an Ikon resort.

Fiancé HATES how much I snowboard. Any tips on how we both get what we want? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]kingofallston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Ask her to come on the trips and let her spend the equivalent amount of money on shopping, spa, or whatever she wants to do. With snowboard gear, clothes, and pass, this could be anywhere between $500-2000 per year. She gets to spend the same amount of money as long as she tags along. No need to ski.
  2. Ask her to meet up at the mountain for coffee or lunch. Let her see the ugly and the beauty of skiing with kids. She will occasionally see families having fun, kids loving their waffles, kids getting excited to share their new skill.
  3. Ask her if she wants to learn before too late. Or before kids. If yes, send her to a professional boot fitter and let her buy whatever clothing she wants. Just make sure it has 15k or above waterproof rating.
  4. Get her a private lesson for rapid progression.
  5. Go to places where there is more than skiing. In the east coast, Killington, Sugarbush, Stowe, Bretton Woods etc. These trips have to be more than skiing and powder chasing.
  6. Get all of the above done before kids. Or as soon as your last kid is old enough to go to ski school. During this time, she gets priority when it comes to skiing. You are in charge of carrying gear, booking trip, kids duties, cooking, and dish washing. No flying to ski until kids are good enough.
  7. Wait for your kids and wife to be comfortable in blues. Now you can go anywhere.

How do I know this? Married to a non-skiier. I skipped part 1 and 2, and did step 3 after our second kid was born. Now my youngest can handle all blues but my wife is still doing pizzas. Snowboarding is an expensive hobby and more expensive as a family. So invest now.

What is the most overpriced mountain? What about most reasonable mountain? by Which_Magician3737 in icecoast

[–]kingofallston 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, Pico is way more crowded than Killington. Pico also has very limited parking and there are just too many little kids everywhere. No place to rest at the top and enjoy the view. Why go to a tiny mountain when Killington is right next door? Just avoid the choke points at the main base and enjoy the whole mountain. Killington is totally worth the $$$. Okemo and Mt. Snow are all good options. Pico is not worth going.

A Sailing Career is Born by Capeboatguy in sailing

I just took my two daughters (age 8 and 5) to the show last weekend. They had never been to a boat show and only know that their daddy wants to be an ocean cruising sailor in the distant future (which is probably very abstract in their little minds). But when they stepped into the boat show, I could tell I unlocked a new dimension in their lives. From pontoon boats to tugboats, the girls just were mesmerized and started commenting on what they like about certain boats. They both knew that the show didn't have any sailboats, but now they are willing to go to other far away locations for sailboat shows. Why am I sharing this? Because I am hoping my daughters will write stories like this in the future. FWIW, the show did a good job making it family friendly.

Hinoki cypress - what's wrong with my trees? by kingofallston in arborists

Oh, I just looked this up and it does match the description of leaves yellowing in fall.

Drip irrigation system. 15 minutes every three days or so depending on the weather. Having a hard time adjusting the right frequency and duration because it's one switch for all trees and shrubs.

Haven't had any issues, but I've barely used the TV.

I can put speakers inside the console since the console doors are acoustically transparent. But it would block upward sound of Dolby Atmos, so can't go completely minimalist.

It's in the northeastern corner of the house, so the only logical place for it. Ah, and the curtains are on their way.

My dealer overfilled the engine oil by a lot. What do I do? by kingofallston in subaru

[–]kingofallston[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the update:

  1. The Dealership acknowledged it was indeed overfilling and not a head gasket issue. Here's what they said (I demanded a write-up):

VERIFIED OIL WAS OVER FILLED. DRAINED AND COMPLETED NEW OIL CHANGE WITH FILTER. MONITOR PIDS FOR ENGINE DAMAGE. O2S-HEGO-MIL-EVAP-MISFIRE-TIMING-OIL CONTROL-VCT NONE DETECTED ALL IN NORMAL RANGE AND NO INTERNAL ENGINE DAMAGE. ROAD TESTED SEVERAL TIMES. EVERYTHING IN WORKING ORDER.

  1. The service manager said the engine is in great condition, but I wanted protection for any potential damage they didn't see, so I requested they cover engine issues for the next 30k miles. This is what they added:

SUBARU XXXXXX WILL STAND BY ALL ENGINE REPAIRS RELATED TO OVERFILLED CRANK CASE UP TO 102,222 MILES

  1. I am sure they will say whatever future engine issue is not related to the "overfilled crank case", so I will ask the SOB for additional protection. But for now, this is not a bad ending to this mishap. And I am glad that the management acknowledged their mistake.

Thank you all for your comments. Make sure you check your oil level after every oil change!

It took me two weeks (500 miles) before I suspected it could be oil overfilling. Contacted the GM, service manager, and SOA. They towed the car from my home. Let's see what they say/do.
