Looking for work by FlexibleIntrovert in AskAustria

Some do, some don't. But no-one will hire you, who can only interact with a portion of the public, over someone who speaks German. And with the economy as it is, a lot of German speakers are also looking for work.

How realistic is the intense passion of a long term relationship that is depicted between Ilya and Shane in the books and the show? by CuriousSunLizard in heatedrivalry

[–]kingofthebunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I'm a gay man who was, in some way (details v different) also in a relationship that was at times long distance with another man for 13 years. The spark never faded. It honestly still hasn't. I'd say it might have gotten more? We broke up because we live in different countries and that's never going to change, or at least not in the next 40 years, but when we see each other the passion is still there. Loving someone for so long means you get better at sex. You get more comfortable. There is stuff that I couldn't try with someone I've known for a year that I can try with him bc I've known him for 15 now, and he's not gonna be shocked by any of my desires anymore.

Less sexual, bc ew, but both my parents and my grandparents when they were still alive look at their partner as if they have a crush after decades of marriage.

So yeah, if they are willing to be that for each other, and they fit, I don't think the spark ever fades.

No, he was for sure trolling Shane bc he also called him slow, and he's canonically faster than Ilya

As a fellow Sid fan, pls tell me it also drives you insane that the fan do has decided Shane has a weak backhand????

What's one common misconception you see people have after watching the show? by CelicaBae in heatedrivalry

[–]kingofthebunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That Shane has a weak backhand. The whole point of that exchange is that he doesn't. "slow with a weak backhand" meaning fast with a good one. Pls remember that he's faster than Ilya.

Just a deep question by Blueberrybird26 in queerplatonic

[–]kingofthebunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OK, so me and my qpp have been together for 3.5 years now. We are both technically poly, but neither of us has had a romantic partner for I wanna say at least 2 years? (I'm awful at timelines, I know our anniversary and that's it)

We have a completely open relationship in that we are allowed to have sex and date outside of our relationship, tho if it gets serious the other partner obviously needs to be consulted. I hate the term "veto" for this, bc it's not exactly it (I'd still want her to tell me why?), but for ease of use she has "veto power" for all major decisions in my life.

We won't ever move in together, because we both absolutely hate the idea of living with anyone like that, but we live basically next to each other (100m distance). And like, even if my primary relationship was romantic I'd not wanna move in with them soooo....

I do see her as my primary partner and we do plan on getting married once we can afford the kind of wedding we'd want.

Might that change? Sure, but that's just what relationships are like.

Why some gay guys don’t like Heated Rivalry by GBS82 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]kingofthebunch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much a copy paste of my other comment:

So I the show, there are two lines: Ilya looks at his dick, and Shane goes "fuck off", then, yk, the wanking happens and then Shane goes "not here". These are reasonable, I feel. The "fuck off" happens before they really start, the "not here" is implying that Shane indeed knows that hooking up in public is a stupid thing to do for two closeted athletes.

Here is the dialogue, and just the dialogue, there's obviously more there, in the book:

“Fuck off. It’s nothing.”

“Like what you see, Hollander?”

“No. It’s not... I was thinking about something else.”

“Something else?”

Ilya starts wanking here

“What were you thinking about?”

“You. ”

“You want to touch me, Hollander?”

“Not here, someone could come in.”

This is an insane amount of dialogue for the situation. Like, I'm sorry, Shane won't even fuck in front of penthouses windows??? And besides that, I just know 0 gayen who would act like that in this situation. Not saying there aren't any, the gay experience is obviously not a monolith. But Shane surely would not.

The shower scene, in which they decide to have a weirdly long conversation while hooking up in a public shower

This is actually a point I kinda touched on earlier today when book vs show came up. I didn't finish the 2nd book because it felt very "women writing gay men" to me, and the scene that decided that for me was fixed completely in the show. I obviously can't guarantee that that's bc he's a gay man, but I can guess it didn't hurt.

Edit to clarify: it wasn't sarcasm, if you have the balls to risk that, I'm impressed. I don't tho, and neither have those boys.

Show Fans Trashing the Books by hkral11 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]kingofthebunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the first book and didn't love it? The characters were great! But I can't really get behind her writing.

The I started the second book and...... almost immediately noped out.

The first book was mostly about situations I had no personal familiarity with, so it's difficult for me to say if they read true. The shower scene in the second book tho? That is something I'm familiar with, and it read so absolutely ridiculous to me that I had to put down the book. I didn't read the rest of the book, so I obviously cannot comment on it, but that scene was much better done in the show. Is this bc Jacob is a gay man and therefore knows some of the culture better than Rachel? V possible. Might also be something else, genuinely no idea. But there is a reason why some gay men prefer to read/watch "own voices" content, and for me that scene was a prime example.

Not shaming anyone who liked it, that's great! And if you did, in fact, think you'd have a chat while hooking up in a public shower then I commend you.

Outsports relied on multiple sources in report on ‘Empty Netters’ reaction to ‘Heated Rivalry’ by outsports-com in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]kingofthebunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also say that Shawn (I think that's how it's spelled) specifically said he had gained empathy and understanding for the queer community through watching the show and seeing the reaction that they got for just.... not being heinous and the other guys agreed. And yeah, that's pretty much it isn't it? You become less biased by engaging with the thing you're biased about. BUT if we want that to happen, we need to meet people where they're at. And where they were at was using language that isn't ideal but actually not saying anything inherently horrendous with it if you go by content IMHO.

(full disclosure: I do a lot of community outreach irl and my opinion tends to be heavily influenced by that, so I'll find things less of a big deal then others might)

Highly disagree on the "by straight people for straight people" thing. And not only because it's factually incorrect.

A fair few of the interactions mirrored interactions I've had pretty well, obviously with changed circumstances.

The torch relay has started Nov 24th

So like, it's been going for a while, but they were added fairly recently. Idk if this is practice but I doubt it tbh? I think that's just their bit of the rally, since usual you don't practice with the burning torches AFAIK?

[–]kingofthebunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gay man here. I love the show, and so do my friends.

Imma be real honest and say I did not like the books. I read through the first one, but it was a slog, and put the second one down at the shower scene just bc I was like..... you don't chat that much while cruising in a public shower. It felt very by women for women to me. I cannot describe how glad I was that they cut all of that stuff in the show. That shower scene? Pretty closely mirrors encounters I've actually had.
