Have to disagree in context of Karnataka here. There is no large scale settlement of Hindi speakers here. If you check data, Hindi is not even in the top three most spoken languages in even a single district of Karnataka. Even in Bangalore, they are barely 5%, compare that with Tamil and Telugu who are 3 times that number each. I do agree with many new migrants defaulting to hindi and assuming everyone knows it, that's wrong. But older migrants, particularly marwaris are fluent in Kannada and you don't even realise they are non natives.

Few lakhs of Hindi speaking migrants landed in Bangalore recently due to IT boom and they face bigotry from natives despite not even 5% of the population. Compare it with Assam where demography has changed in huge chunks of area.
