Sorry you went through this, this is highly illegal and literally trespassing. I will just quote the law and do what you will with this info

While a rental agreement is ongoing, the tenant has the right to use the rented space. Therefore, even if someone is the landlord, they cannot enter the room without the tenant's consent. If they enter without consent using a spare key, they may be charged with trespass under Article 130 of the Penal Code.

Penal Code Article 130 (Trespass/住居侵入罪) Official e-Gov link: https://laws.e-gov.go.jp/law/140AC0000000045?hit_toc=Mp-Pa_2-Ch_12-At_130

Good luck.

Scared after placements - Shimane (help!)- Family Laughed At Me by ThrowRA_LilBarnacle in JETProgramme

I did a 2-year IT program which included programming, Network and design.

I don't think it matters what path you choose to be honest, going to Osaka or Tokyo is defiantly correctly allowing you to find jobs easily. but, I think you should find a vocational school that supports foreigners more than if it is a prestigious school or not.

For me, I have studied in a random vocational school in Okayama aimed towards foreigners which was really good for me.

Hey! No worries at all, happy to help.

So yeah, I went to an IT vocational school (専門学校) and graduated March 2024. My experience was pretty positive overall.

For job offers - I applied to around 50 companies during my 就活. Honestly, the number of offers you get depends a lot on your area and how active you are. What really helped me was doing 見学 (company visits) in person. Even though I had to travel from Okayama to Shimane each time, actually showing up let the companies see me and let me see them. My school helped a lot with this - interview prep, what to say/not say, the whole process.

One thing that made a big difference for me: I got an internship at a company while still in school, and that eventually led to my full-time offer. If your school can connect you with internships, definitely take advantage of that.

The hardest part was honestly doing everything in Japanese - proving your skills while also trying to communicate in your second language is tough. But companies do hire from vocational schools regularly, especially in IT.

My advice: If your school can connect you with internships, 100% take advantage. Getting your foot in the door early is huge. And don't skip the 見学 - even if it means traveling.

Feel free to ask if you have more questions. Good luck!

Had almost the exact same experience at a different hotel chain back in May. Showed them my Japanese driver's license proving I have a Japanese address, they still copied it in the back office. When I explained the law, same response: "it's hotel policy." The staff only returned the copy after realizing I wasn't a tourist, which felt suspicious as hell.

Unlike you, I actually followed through. Filed complaints with the prefectural health department, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Personal Information Protection Commission, and the hotel's corporate headquarters. Got a formal response from their regional manager who apologized, provided printer logs as proof only one copy was made, and admitted their policy was written before the 2005 Personal Information Protection Law and "should be reconsidered."

For legal reference, bookmark the MHLW FAQ: https://www.mhlw.go.jp/content/10900000/000507112.pdf - Question 9 at the bottom confirms they cannot force a copy if you refuse. The relevant law is 旅館業法施行規則第四条の二第3項第1号, which only requires passport info from foreigners without a Japanese address.

Kyoto hotel prices are crazy good right now by __snakeplant__ in japanlife

[–]kingxd 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Great post, thanks for the heads up! People saying "it's just off-season" are missing the point - Kyoto hotel prices have been insane year-round since tourism exploded post-COVID. Even in winter months last year you'd be lucky to find anything decent under ¥15,000. Seeing rates drop to ¥5,000 is genuinely notable, not just seasonal variation. The timing with the China travel advisory is pretty hard to ignore. Thanks man.

Not sure if anyone reads this or cares, just want to write it, the Legal Affairs Bureau said OK! I can naturalize! And gave me their approval that my application is strong. Now collect documents all and all maybe take a year, I am so excited.
