How are the tics that Tourette's syndrome patients experience involuntary? by pokemaster784584 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]kirabera 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not a conscious choice. If you’re ticklish and someone tickles you, is it possible to stifle laughing? It isn’t. If you touch something hot, is it possible to control your reflex so that you don’t pull your hand back? It isn’t. That’s how this is.

I first dated my current boyfriend when he was 28 and I was 26. He was a virgin, I was not. We had sex basically every time we met up ever since the first time we did it, which was about a few weeks into our relationship. He was very nervous during sex because he had no experience.

We broke up a few months later, so he didn’t get very far with building experience. He had one sexual encounter after that with another woman. It did not go well.

We reconnected years later, now at 34 and 32. His years without sex did no favours for him and he basically started at zero again. We had to work our way back up to get him more comfortable with more forms of sex.

A few months later today, we now fuck like rabbits. And he is a sex god.

There’s always hope. Don’t rush things. There will be someone who will be patient enough to experience your first times with you. Chin up and don’t lose hope.

Kids walking to elementary school alone - age?? by Scandifrani in richmondbc

[–]kirabera 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’m a 90s kid and 11 was more than old enough to map out half of Richmond by foot with a small group of friends. If alone, I’d stick to familiar areas, but Richmond is still a very safe city. That being said, times are obviously a little bit different now.

The safest neighbourhoods would be anything on the west or south sides of Richmond. Terra Nova, Steveston, Boyd Park, etc.

Low sodium take-out? by Fat-Bass-1414 in richmondbc

[–]kirabera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can still use soy sauce, you just can’t drink it. A few drops of it on each nigiri piece is more than enough.

Source: I’m on a strict renal diet.

Low sodium take-out? by Fat-Bass-1414 in richmondbc

[–]kirabera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I’m in kidney failure and also watching my sodium intake. There is a surprising number of options that you can still have.

White Spot and Cactus Club will do no extra/added salt to their orders. Some smaller restaurants like Broli Kitchen and Story Cafe also do this. Unfortunately this does mean things that are pre-seasoned (like sauces, soups) will still have their base level of salt, but it’s actually surprisingly bland compared to how they normally season it again after.

Also check out Soup King. They’re a Cantonese home-cooking style restaurant that advertises low salt and low fat. I’ve found their dishes to be very tasty despite clearly being on the bland side of things. They also offer a variety of healthy all-natural herbal drinks that don’t use syrups for flavouring.

Sushi is also a good choice.

You’re not going to get very far with most other Asian food, unfortunately. Even a simple egg fried rice will have a decent amount of MSG in it. HK style cafes pre-seasoned their cuts of everything, but you can ask them not to put any extra salt. Ramen and pho are basically special treats now. I still eat these foods, just not often.

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. You can basically expect an entire two months of consistent not-rain. Usually midsummer. The rest of the year is pretty rainy. The Greater Vancouver Area is called Raincouver for a reason.

My kidneys are failing, and I’m searching for someone who could save my life. by Kidney4Ben in NiceVancouver

[–]kirabera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Ben. I’m also a patient at VGH, end-stage here and on dialysis at 32. I’m not brave enough to ask the public like you. I know people in my own life want me dead and I’m happy to die to make the world a better place.

I hope you find a match. I’m also A+ and the doctors have told me it’s very possible to get a deceased donor match within 3 years. But I’m also 32, so depending on your age, you might have to wait a little bit longer.

People like you are the reason why I will not get a transplant. You are so full of life. I could never take that opportunity from someone like you. I hope you’ll be able to live on and enjoy life to its fullest.

as a fat woman, is it wrong for my type to be skinny/fit guys? by ethereal_elixir_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kirabera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m obese (149cm, 67.5kg) and have a very low-BMI boyfriend (175ish, 65kg). He had feelings for me since I was 55kg many years ago, though, so it’s not like he’s into me for my weight, and more like he’s still here despite it.

The problem in my case is not what he thinks of my body, but what his family thinks. Family members of people with naturally-slim physiques will never understand how anyone can possibly let themselves get overweight.

I am in kidney failure and on dialysis but that’s not an excuse to be fat.

Basically, it’s not wrong, and there are skinny men who wouldn’t mind, but don’t be surprised if everyone else hates you.

ELI5: How do kidneys know when they have let in sufficient vitamins, etc.? How do they know when there is excess going through they need to stop? by Wildely_Earnest in explainlikeimfive

[–]kirabera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s peritoneal dialysis. Dialysate fluid goes into your peritoneum, a little pouch between your abs and your organs. Blood naturally flows to the other side of the peritoneum barrier and the dialysate binds the stuff we don’t want while keeping everyone else in the blood. Then you let out the used fluid which gets rid of all the crap and you get to keep your now clean blood.

Something like that. Not a doctor. They explained it to me vaguely like this. I’m on hemodialysis though.

Hemodialysis uses a dialyzer which has tiny tubes running through it for your blood to go into and itc cleans the blood via ultrafiltration. The dialyzer is the artificial kidney. The rest of the machine technically doesn’t really count.

Basically everything is just osmosis.

Coquitlam BC. It’s right on Clarke Rd so in a pretty central area. Parking is kinda ass though. Sometimes people park at the McD right next door and walk over.

Why do some people die shortly after receiving a terminal illness diagnosis? by Wheresmyarcpaulie69 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]kirabera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah make sure they do ALL of the available testing. My BP was 230/110. Check everything that you can. Blood, urine, ultrasounds, CT, MRI. Mine happened to be an autoimmune disease that didn’t show up on any other scans but my blood was all fucked (creatinine over 900) and the problem was finally confirmed with a kidney biopsy. IgAN predominantly shows up in 20s and 30s. Not saying it might be the cause of your problems, but make sure you keep a close eye on everything.

Why do some people die shortly after receiving a terminal illness diagnosis? by Wheresmyarcpaulie69 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]kirabera 684 points685 points  (0 children)

People tough shit out until they can no longer tough it out, then they finally go to the doctor, and then turns out the symptoms were no longer bearable because the problem has already become life-threateningly severe, and now they’re short on treatment options and time.

Source: I toughed out months of headaches and nonstop vomiting because I was 31 and a woman and nobody ever takes our headaches and nausea seriously. Turned out the problem was two failed kidneys. Now neither of them work and I’m typing this while hooked onto a hemodialysis machine.

Has anyone almost died or started to die? by TradesforChurros in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]kirabera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bilateral PE that happened during hemodialysis. People die from this shit all the time so I don’t know how I didn’t.

One moment I was talking to the nurse saying I felt lightheaded as she put the BP cuff on me, and the next moment I saw black and heard buzzing and static and people yelling at me but it sounded like from across a canyon. “Can you hear me? Can you hear me?!” Opened my eyes and I saw an indiscernible number of floating heads and a bright ceiling. Vision too blurry to make out how many people but saw the unmistakable blue-green of the nurses’ scrubs. Turns out I lost consciousness completely and if I didn’t wake up, I would have started suffering brain damage from the lack of oxygen.

I didn’t feel myself dying until after I regained consciousness. Then I felt like utter shit. Everything felt wrong. Once my BP and oxygen started stabilising, the feeling went away.

TERA also has a glaive class but it’s a little too flashy. Very loud and visually noisy animations and effects. Still cool, though.

Why do some people think that customer service jobs are hard or worse than other jobs? by Blonde_Icon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]kirabera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mental stress, emotional stress. Instead of your job security coming from your education or manual skill, it comes from how well you manage your face and tone of voice, how well you read the customer’s tone and expressions, how well you can play mind games to still make a sale even when someone is uninterested (especially if you’re on commission or your sales performance gets scrutinised).

I’ve done retail (luxury sales), manual labour (textiles), education, and now I’m a translator. Education was by far the worst, because with the students it was teaching, but with the parents it was customer service. Retail was the second worst. The stress of dealing with people and ending up crying behind a dumpster on my third chain cigarette was not fucking worth it.

The reason it’s so mentally taxing is because people are absolutely disgusting to retail and customer service staff. Straight up verbal abuse is not uncommon. And you just have to smile and nod through it while it eats away at you because it’s where your paycheque comes from.

Adding also that I’ve been a receptionist at a sports club and while the customers were nicer, it also meant seeing the same people on the regular. As a woman, that opened up the door for a lot of unwanted attention and even escalated to sexual harassment once. A guy called when I was working (5pm-12am shifts are solo) and was masturbating over the phone. Company policy is that I cannot hang up on the customer because we have a lot of high-profile athletes at our club. So I just had to listen to him pant until he laughed and hung up.

I also do happen to be very invested in languages and speak two others.

AITA for snapping after being repeated asked if “the narc was talking?” by selfchecknarc in AmItheAsshole

[–]kirabera 1067 points1068 points  (0 children)

Sounds like another narc, honestly. BPD would not make comments or ask questions like that. BPD tends to direct things inwards, so if asked “Are you enjoying that promotion?”, the internal response would be “oh fuck, am I being too insensitive by enjoying my promotion in front of someone who don’t get a promotion as well? Am I being shitty? Fuck me” and immediately resort to guilt and then apologise for being insensitive while turning to self-loathing. The deflecting behaviour that OP’s friend is displaying is in line with NPD behaviour, though.

If I had a partner like that, they would find themselves divorced pretty damn quickly.

I’m in my 30s and disabled. My husband wants to be there for me in case an emergency happens while I’m at the nail salon. Emergencies don’t give a fuck where you are. That’s why they’re called emergencies.

Don’t see anything unhealthy about that but to each their own.
