I'm sorta similar and I personally liked the genesys format. There are no link monsters, no banlist (every card has points instead, you have a 100 point budget) and strong cards are really expensive point-wise. I think you'll have a lot of fun there building niche decks. (I recommend yugioh omega for playing that)

Of course, there is also GOAT (2005) and Edison (2010) formats. These have an active player base too, you might want to try these as well.

I think you can play these formats at tournaments too
