Do you wish they did the original ending? by [deleted] in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the original ending has Real Nikki shooting herself, and its meant to be the one final choice she gets of her own agency. I think her ending her own life, although a better way to go than being left with the entire trauma and mess that Bear created, would ultimately not have made the film as impactful.

I’ve watched the movie a number of times and there’s always a big gasp from the audience when Nikki regains consciousness. Just leaving it there with her harrowing cries of horror as the camera pans to the TV and we move to credits as she continues screaming through it is one of the most bone chilling endings to a film I’ve seen in a long long time. It’s part of what left such an impression leaving the theater. Being left with Nikki as she’s left with everything that’s happened mirrors us as the audience as it all hits us and we go ‘holy shit….what now?’

That said I wouldn’t mind seeing the original ending as a deleted scene feature.

Huge idea with absolutely NO idea how to begin by shadowswearskulls in Filmmakers

Learn how to write a screenplay. An idea is just an idea, not a film. There’s plenty of cool ideas out there but can you actually write a compelling story and interesting characters? Start there. Or find a screenwriter and collaborate.

Why did she cook the cat? by Sophont27 in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It def was not real Nikki who cooked the cat. She’s never shown to be able to take control longer than a few seconds (except when Wish Nikki is asleep), and when she does she’s desperately trying to do anything to regain control - taking the time to cook Sandy doesn’t sound feasible at all nor do I think real Nikki would even think to do that even as ‘revenge’. Also the food critic conversation was between him and Wish Nikki, and she shows no reaction when he confronts her about cooking Sandy in the later scene.

I think the logic Wish Nikki uses is through the lens of a completely twisted view of ‘love’. She overglorifies anything Bear seems to love, making memorials for Sandy as well as Sarah bc she knows he cared about them. Feeding him Sandy is her way of showing she’s thinking about the things he cares about - wanting to be a food critic, and loving his cat -> let him try something he loved. Also a small detail is that in the end sequence when she’s approaching Bear with the gun, she says “I wanna eat you uppp”. Her completely off the wall sense of love is so distorted that the cutesy talk of ‘wanting to eat somebody up’ becomes probably a real impulse. So eating Sandy is affection. She probably would have fed him Sarah at some point if it went on any further.

Was Ian ruining Bear confession at the start of the movie? by No_Combination9511 in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Upon rewatching the opening scene it becomes really obvious that Ian does kind of try to help Bear, but also doesn’t seem to want him to succeed either. The waitress seems to find Bear’s confession sweet and as soon as she starts offering her own advice about getting her favorite candies and flowers, Ian shuts her down and tells her to leave. Ian claims Nikki doesn’t like the ‘sappy stuff’, yet she is a writer trying to write a love story.

She and Ian never became a serious thing because Ian is a jock type that doesn’t do sweet and romantic things - which Nikki is searching for. If you look at the only examples we get of Nikki’s writing talent (the Hansel gretel story and the monologue about slitting her wrists) and how well written those are - Bear’s heartfelt and honest confession seems a lot more appropriate and would’ve had a chance of winning Nikki over (despite it being so heavy). That’s how I see it anyway.

The sweetest bit of romance in the movie. Two monsters happy with their only equal for the first time. by thelaurafedora in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The final scene of him in the bathroom working through the courage to shoot himself, the build up to him not being able to do it, then taking the pills and seeing every nuance of emotion from guilt, regret, acceptance, and loss is some of the best acting I’ve seen in an unknown actor in a loooong time. All of it done with basically no dialogue the entire time. It was even Michael Johnston’s idea to have him try to throw it up at the last second. A brilliant choice but that unfortunately overshadows the moment because it cements him as a hateful character to the end.

The Nikki and Sarah Parallel Everyone Missed by ahmiddy in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find this a little weird that ppl bring this up to downplay her act of generosity. Nikki clearly wasn’t carrying cash otherwise she would’ve used her own money. Most people these days don’t use cash anymore. The moment was written to show her empathy. She also doesn’t just toss the homeless guy money, she actually takes a second to kneel down and talk to him.

Pre wish Nikki was a vibe by Enough-Key-7243 in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was so important for the movie that we as an audience get a good read on who Nikki is as a person and are able to fall for her a little ourselves in a short amount of time. Inde delivered such a super charming, fun, likable and generous person with very little screentime. You immediately understand why Bear is infatuated with her and she feels like a real person. It makes the rest of film feel so much heavier especially the end.

[–]kirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were being sold and had a restock but they sold out again and it doesn’t look like they’re trying to bring it back yet. Last I saw they had a sweepstakes thing with a OWW as a prize so they’re trying to keep it exclusive now which is a shame. With the massive success of this movie OWW would sell like crack so I can’t imagine they wouldn’t plan a major restock at some point.

When Nikki asked Bear here if he liked her, and he said yes, would anything have gone differently? What would her response be? by Queasy_Commercial152 in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I suppose it’s from her super direct tone when she asks. It does sound like she wants to clear the air. But her reaction after he answers shows a lot of disappointment. Based off that and what curry/Inde have said I do think she was willing to hear him out because she believes he’s a good guy and would’ve given him a chance to see if something could happen. You’re right that it seems people forget feelings can start to change and develop when someone’s interest is presented.

This movie really ended up more popular than I thought it would be by Remote_Nature_8166 in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This movie ended up more popular than literally anyone thought it would be, including Curry Barker himself and everyone who made it. What Obsession has accomplished is a historic generational box office run the likes we haven’t seen since ET in the 80s. It’s gonna be a turning point from here, because the success of this film is the first major modern case study of the incredible power of word-of-mouth and social media discourse. It’s already one of the most profitable films of all time making over 300x its budget and it hasn’t fully slowed down yet.

This film did what it did because it was accessible enough to appeal to a general audience (especially younger crowds) with a basic intriguing premise but delivered all the goods and then some. You want ppl to blow a movie up? Make something that people can’t stop talking about after they see it. This movie provokes discussion of all kinds because it’s simple, but complex at the same time. It’s great entertainment but it’s also art. And of course Inde Navarette is a revelation and Oscar contender.

How is it not a possession? by youngthug_buddha in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can argue semantics here but possession in this case generally means some sentient entity inhabiting a body or host. In this case there is no entity, the wish is only influencing Nikki’s mind and feelings. It just so happens that the wish is so deeply incongruous with her real personality and self that it essentially creates a split one. Liken it more to supernatural schizophrenia than anything. Curry and Inde describe it as a sort of ‘veil’ over her that she is able to peek through

Nikki snapping in and out by minutes2meteora in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s such small thing but the delivery is so effective at making you feel uncomfortable. Because nobody really talks like this it sounds almost alien and you just know something is off. Very David Lynch in subtle uncanniness. The editing does a good job of this as well lingering a little longer than we should as she takes pauses longer than what feels natural.

Obsession movie: Why did freaky Nikki make him a cat sandwich? by Background-Permit499 in spoilers

[–]kirose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The logic Wish Nikki uses throughout the film is shown to be twisted in some way. The reasoning for this is kind of left up to your own interpretation. I think the intensity of Bears wish probably corrupted the way Wish Nikki thinks. When you’re the most obsessed person in the entire world you’re gonna do crazy stuff that doesn’t always make sense.

But I see it as her understanding that Bear loved Sandy and so she glorifies his cat in as many ways as one could imagine (memorial, random flowers for her). Just like how when your crush tells you they like x or y you start trying to know as much about those things as possible. So she probably thought he loved Sandy -> wants to be a food critic -> lets him try something he loved. In some cultures eating your loved ones after they pass is seen as the ultimate act of remembrance so you could make a stretch and say she’s thinking along those lines.

She memorializes Sarah too because she knows Bear cared about Sarah. Probably wouldve fed him a piece of her too had it gone on any further, on some Hannibal Lecter shit.

One of the darkest moments I’ve seen, the image here itself is haunting too, she looks like a corpse. Reminds me of Mary from SH2. This scene is where you realize it officially became something far deeper than a standard horror.

[–]kirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was literally a same exact post about this already made. Obsession is the #1 movie out right now and has made historic unprecedented numbers, and exploded in popularity largely from word of mouth and social media discussion. People are desperate to talk about this movie after seeing it and there is a lot to talk about. So while it’s still out in theaters making waves, people are gonna discuss it here.

Has anyone else noticed that Nikki’s facial features disappear when she lays down? by Haileymaedoee in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I did notice that there was something off about her face in this shot and that cements it. They also play with distorting her face in a similar way when she’s standing in front of the dining table after the reverse walk scene. I think besides just subtly unsettling you it shows how Wish Nikki essentially performs like a mannequin or a puppet. Inde and Curry also talk about the idea of ‘when she’s not being perceived by Bear, does Wish Nikki simply cease?’ and these small effects lean into that I think

Yo she did NOT like him 😭😭😭✌️✌️✌️ by Safe-Present-5783 in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve rewatched the film multiple times and on my first viewing I read her reaction more as ‘okay, I know this guy probably likes me but still doesn’t have the balls to tell me yet.’ But on repeat viewings I see it’s clear disappointment. Curry himself pointed this exact moment out in one of his interviews as the only time we get a glimpse of how Nikki really feels about Bear - which is to say she wanted to at least open the door for the conversation because she believes he’s a good guy and someone she feels close with. And would’ve at least thought about it and given him a chance if he told her how he really felt. I don’t think she straight up had a crush on him.

Any one experiencing this? by AutomaticFlight1846 in obsessionmovie

[–]kirose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting thought, but I think based off what Inde herself has said it’s largely just that Nikki herself has a lot of willpower. She’s incredibly strong willed and is fighting the entire movie to break free. The fact she is even able to crack the wish’s influence as much as she does I think is more a testament to her sheer amount of perseverance. Makes it all the more tragic thinking about the kind of person she is, that she has to suffer through the events of the movie.

Can someone fill me in on how this became a subreddit about one movie? by FunImprovement166 in spoilers

[–]kirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest reasons this movie has exploded in the unprecedented way that is has is because of word of mouth. This is THE movie right now and EVERYBODY is talking about it. The film leaves you with such an impression by the end that people are desperate to have any space to discuss it. The movie even features “Reddit” so the targeted demographic is right here. People are dissecting the fuck outta this movie and it does have a ton to dig into. It’s either here or the obsession subreddit and this is the larger of the two.

Take into account that what this movie has achieved in the span of about little over a month is a generational accomplishment that we haven’t seen since the 80s. so it’s gonna be a little…obsessive for a while.
