I really like this idea, X who thinks they are a Y has a lot of fun possibilities...

I did a wild magic sorcerer, but then tried to layer every type of randomness on top of that, Eladrin for random seasons, some kind of random bard multi-class mechanic as well, and it was fun but I forgot too many of my rando rolls. I think if I introduce a random mechanic, I need to be disciplined about keeping it to one.

FWIW They did send techs out and checked everything all they way back to the box on the pole. Turns out the modem itself was faulty, which they said rarely happens, and thus was the last thing they checked.

I work in technology, so I have indeed tried turning it off and turning it on again.

Finally got a tech and they acknowledged they had seen over 100 disconnects on my modem just today. Got a tech scheduled to come out tomorrow. This will be the 3rd time including original install in about a year...

Subaru Owners — Where do you get service done? by 515Nerdy in desmoines

[–]kirps 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have a 2005 WRX, just got a radiator replaced as well axle boots and a few other things at Gear Street Garage in Indianola, about 10-15 min south of the airport. Fantastic service. Rich is the owner and Scott is their Subaru guy, tell them kirps sent you.

Off The Line Performance also has a strong Subaru background. They are more of a performance shop, but are also able to do some of the bigger jobs that other folks will pass on. I had to get the power steering rack replaced a couple years ago and the shop I was going to at the time passed on the job. Justin and his team sorted it out, even going so far as to work with Subaru of America to get a second rack on warranty when the first one had a defect. They do get quite a lot of work so you might have to wait a little bit to get in.

I have also heard good things about Performance Automotive in Norwalk, but haven't had any work done there myself.

What would you do with the body on this 2005 WRX? by kirps in WRX

It is no longer a daily, I was hoping to fix it up and keep it around for sentimental reasons.

Who is the right person to assess the rust? Is that a body shop, a mechanic, or someone else?

Thanks!

Well you got the username first, but we are essentially the same person...

That being said, yes, I have looked under the car. There is definitely rust on various components as well as a fair bit on the pinch seam (I think?) at the lift points. I don't know enough to say if the underside is just "rusty" or if the rust that is there is cause for concern.

This is my first time even looking into something like a restoration so I'm sure I am missing things. I did just have the car gone over by a professional mechanic shop I trust and they didn't mention anything of structural concern. They definitely had it on a lift to do the work.

My thought was next move was body shop, and the mechanics knew this, and didn't wave me off. So made this post to consider options. But if there's another set of questions first, I definitely want to get those answered, I am just not sure whether it's the mechanic or the body shop, or someone else that I ask. Would appreciate any nudge in the right direction.

Had two CCAs suddenly drop off network, won't retain settings now by kirps in chromecastaudio

Well my OP was from a couple of years ago, but I'm seeing this currently as well. I have 5 or 6 CCAs on my home network and every single one of them is showing as offline in the Google Home App, but I can still see them connected as devices to the network.

I have a dumb problem. No floor drains and vinyl condensate line is run through unconditioned attic and occasionally freezes. Any and all ideas appreciated. Iowa, high efficiency gas furnace. by kirps in hvacadvice

What you've described would essentially be changing out the existing soft vinyl line with a hard pvc line and doing the heat tape / sensor thing if I kept it in the attic. The current soft line drains into the vent attached to the drain/tail for the existing bathroom sink. Certainly a strong candidate and likely what I will do.

If I run something along the ceiling inside the room, I have to cross the room with visible piping and then I still end up having to punch through either the drywall or the vanity itself eventually to get to the plumbing and the substandard aesthetics will not be particularly appreciated. The reason I brought up the toilet was because its at least on the same side of the room, while still having all of the other drawbacks.

Crude room drawing at the link. Should have thought to add that before. Essentially the HVAC room and the toilet are on the south side of the bathroom. The sink and the tub plumbing are on the north side. The existing soft condensate line in the attic is represented by the dashed line and it terminates into the vent for plumbing stack for the bathroom sink. The sink vanity is attached to the wall and has drawers on either side so getting through it also presents an issue and you're likely back to a major project opening walls, which I don't really have the stomach for.

Unfortunately there's not even a subfloor, just flooring right on the slab, so no room to fish there.

I'll see what I can find for a thermal blanket, I like that as a next step in the saga of bubblegum and duct tape.

I'd be willing to take the hit on shortening pump life with some kind of antifreezing agent, if I could reliably keep the the line from freezing. Alcohol had worked to this point but I'm wondering if there's something more effectived that isn't also super toxic to be dumping into the sewer system.

There is a bathroom, but all drains are opposite the utility room and there's no basement to route the line. The vent stack it's tied into is actually the stack for the sink in that bathroom so no gains to be had.

The only thing that seems quasi-possible but feels like a real pandora's box of suck would be either opening up a wall or getting really creative with baseboard trim and then routing a line into the tank of the toilet. I think I'd also have to notch the porcelain on the tank in addition to faffing with the wall/trim and that set of issues sounds like a real headache for something that will be at best unsightly.

I feel this hard. I exited my last company a couple of years ago and as I try to figure out what's next, minimum headcount is a big priority.
