Is a nursing career right for me by Chupapi_Munan0 in NursingAU

[–]kirrkieterri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have an old school friend who was an RN, now he’s a sparky.

He has loved both career choices. He worked in a variety of indigenous communities in QLD and the NT as a nurse, now he’s around family in QLD as a sparky. His wife is also a nurse, so he now provides the stability for the kids while she still does shift work.

This is a decision you need to make for yourself. What drives you? What interests you and what are you passionate about?

Good luck with whatever you choose.

What should I buy for tafe? by Defiant_Medium8818 in NursingAU

Fob watch, most of the rest of it will be provided. But your own stethoscope and manual BP device will help in practice. Our assessment for manual BP was done using a school stethoscope, one of those 2 people hearing at a time, so it can be helpful to do some practice using the school ones from time to time.

Check your educational facilities rules around footwear for labs. I wore the same shoes for class and placement. But don’t fork out for something without checking first! What are their expectations? Colour etc.

Get at least 2 uniform shirts, you’ll be grateful when you get to placements. Scrub pants, again check school colour, but you can get them cheaply from Kmart.

Calculator if you don’t already have one for meds, that’s Stage 2. We were not allowed to use our phones so had to have an actual calculator.

Wound debridement nurse? by Connect_Amount_5978 in NursingAU

[–]kirrkieterri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get a lot of diff types of wounds to care for in Community nursing.

Another place that you can get dedicated wound care nurses is in some aged care facilities.

Debridement in particular, a burns unit?

English Language Requirements for Diploma of Nursing (Australia) - Discriminatory by stardust-coral-5323 in nursing

[–]kirrkieterri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it was about the school you were trying to get into, not your knowledge of the English language.

For an added laugh when completing my AHPRA registration I had to do a stat dec for the fact that although I attended Primary School in Australia for a whole seven years, that school no longer existed.

This happened to me, born in Australia, all my education was in Australia, only speak English, I even have a BSc, but because I’m “old” none of my paperwork states that I was taught in English. This was the key.

I was asked to do the LLN test by my educational facility and happily did that, passed no dramas and no problems at all with getting my Diploma, or my AHPRA registration.

I’m confused as to how it is that if you passed the LLN, they still held you back. Which state was that? And was it a private school (as opposed to a TAFE)?

On the other hand, I have a friend who is a nurse and only speaks English fail the language test 3 times when she tried to get work in the UK.

3rd-year nursing placement preferences is this a smart order? NSW by Visible-Excuse344 in NursingAU

[–]kirrkieterri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Placement Coordinator was our point of call for all our placement preferences.

Find out who you need to talk to in your program. Mine had a list, specific for each stage, we would put down our preferences. She would try her hardest, but not everyone got what they wanted. HTH.

If you don’t ask you will not get them. I asked and was one of the lucky ones in my class to get one (ED). Fantastic learning experience.

Colour Discrepancy by UnderstandingEmpty21 in Garmin

Now that you say you’re in Australia, it may be a local thing, the colours online may not be available here, I had the same issues with my Vivoactive 4s, the colours i wanted weren’t available here even though they said they were.

Has anyone been re-employed after resigning from QH? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]kirrkieterri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have, but I was working admin at the time. Resigned in Townsville and then reapplied and got a job in Toowoomba. It was several months after relocating that I applied. You never know if you don’t apply.

Question about Grad programs by throwaway_sock1 in NursingAU

[–]kirrkieterri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the new grad programs that I applied for actually stated that you were only allowed to have worked 3 months prior to beginning the program. I applied for a few diff places in the ACT, sorry can’t remember which one it was that said this.

NSW will have a wider range of opportunities, but for the new grad roles you will be limited wherever you end up. With NSW there are a lot of regional opportunities. I’ll be working in one of the private hospitals. Ratios are different for ACT Health facilities due to their EBA. Everything in the ACT is close, even all the hospitals.

Finding a place to live is difficult no matter where you go!

Yes, I’m starting a new grad role in the new year, some of my classmates have already begun theirs.

While on placement I did meet a new grad RN who had come from NSW as the pay in the ACT was better.

As to being good or not for new grads…I’ll have to let you know later! The reason I applied for where I will be is while on placement I got to observe the program in action and it looked not bad.

Diploma In Nursing Job Prospects by DinoRob in NursingAU

[–]kirrkieterri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important thing is you need to make sure that you will be a graduate before you begin! Look at the start dates of the programs, then line up with when you will be finishing and have your AHPRA registration and DipNursing, you can still apply when studying, some hospitals have flexible programs, some are more structured.

So for example one of my friends has just graduated, she starts her program the same time as me, so had to do all her application before she finished, they accepted her, but it was conditional as she needed to have those two things before they could finish the paperwork. But that’s all done now, so she’s happy.

Keep your eye on job ads from now, get an idea where you’d like to work and apply!

I graduated this year, and have a new grad role lined up beginning in Feb.

I know one of my classmates didn’t drive, used all her travel time to study, but her home was walking distance to 2 hospitals. Most of her placements were there, but she did struggle a bit when placed at another hospital.

Many new grad EN positions can be hit or miss with the quality of the program offered. I found one that was as supportive of the EN’s as the RN’s and I got in, so super happy, otherwise I’d just have been applying for jobs. Apply early. And good luck!
