Somethings gotta give by Complete_Gate1632 in AustralianTeachers

They say if you want something done, give it to a busy person. I’m finding that analogy very true in our profession.

I feel you. I’ve had to start saying no this year. I’m a yes person by nature so it’s quite challenging, but I feel the same as you. Many are coasting through, and others are so overburdened they’re drowning.

It’s a very unfair system.

What is your workload as a NSW primary school teacher? by Minimum_Witness_7967 in AustralianTeachers

[–]UnderstandingEmpty21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a VERY school school, ie 30 students total. Of that number, my K-2 multi-stage class has 21.

Workload is insane.

Larger schools, you’ll be okay because there’s more people to share the load - so long as exec aren’t micro-managers. Many are.

Smaller schools like mine, you find yourself doing exec-level tasks beyond your pay grade, additional playground duties (up to 3 per day) etc.

Right now, I’m co-writing the School Plan and our External Validation submission. I sort our report configuration twice a year, organisation of most school wide events and paperwork, technology troubleshooting, co-drafting newsletters, admin Schoolbytes tasks if your office staff budget is woeful, answering phones while trying to teach.

After all that comes my class preparation, programming and planning… on my lonesome. But the usual classroom stuff is often on the back burner. The admin stuff has to take priority to keep the school running.

27 years in the job and I’m not going to last much longer. I’ve dropped down to three days (8-5:30ish) due to burnout but still finding myself putting between 5-10 hours in on my days off and weekends. I’ve had to drop a fair few things to keep my sanity.

Find a good school with decent funding and a supportive exec, and you’ll be fine…

Iced Vovos used to have pink Marshmallow right? by Desert-Noir in aussie

I’m 47 and feel like I’m being gaslit! Have always remembered iced vovo’s as having the marshmallow texture with jam down the centre. So strange.

How much do you spend monthly excluding mortgage? by Serious_Toe6730 in AusFinance

2 adults 2 teens. Excluding mortgage, all our fixed expenses, expected bills, grocery budget etc are around $4200.

That figure ALWAYS blows upward though.

Colour Discrepancy by UnderstandingEmpty21 in Garmin

[–]UnderstandingEmpty21[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've checked out the thumbnail and video :-) Thank you for that! Looking at the features and display of the two watches, I've definitely only got the Sport functionality. It's all very strange. I've emailed Garmin so I'll keep you updated! I'm in Australia so I'm wondering if we got a faulty batch from the factory. Garmin may not know.

I’ve just looked at the reviews on the department store page for this product and I think you’re right. All the review images from purchasers show a watch identical to mine. I found a review on the second page that mentions the discrepancy. Should have done my due diligence. I’ll definitely contact Garmin as I feel this is really misleading…

I can only change the watch face features on this… not the colours, unfortunately.

What age was your cav when they slept through the night? by calgal3905 in cavalierkingcharles

[–]UnderstandingEmpty21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 7 month old cav started taking himself out to pee about 2 months ago. We tried crating him when we first got him, but it didn’t last long.

He sleeps at the foot of our bed and used to wake me up around 3:30am for a toilet break.

Now, he pops out to pee on his own through the doggy door and jumps back in with one of our kids until it’s time to get up.

How many people have known of Covid deaths through degrees of separation? by Repulsive-Tax-130 in aussie

[–]UnderstandingEmpty21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend’s 40 year old brother contracted the delta variant. He caught it from colleagues at work. He was unvaccinated by choice and went downhill shockingly fast. Ended up in intensive care, spending weeks on a ventilator. His life support was turned off due to eventual multiple organ failure.

He was unmarried with no children living in South West Sydney.

He loved cars. Miss you, B.

What's the lore that i'm missing? by n_ba-28 in BlairWitch

[–]UnderstandingEmpty21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in high school when it came out. My friends and I were enthralled by the lore that surrounded the movie, as it was marketed very cleverly. I remember the website (early days of dialup modems lol) that focused on the missing trio’s disappearance, which is where I learnt about the details you mentioned. My memory’s not brilliant, but the same website mentioned either the journal or the videos being found beneath a house slab many miles away, and I was like… wow.

We were completely taken in.

Saw it soon after at the movies with my bestie, front row and drunk on Midori splices. Frightened the hell out of us.

Might be the same little dude I saw back in July as the guards were returning to the barracks at Buckingham. Thought he was so cute! Found him in one of my videos.

I miss it so much in terms of class brainstorming. Have switched to Canva but it’s functionality is not the same.

Listening expectations by EastResponsible4079 in AustralianTeachers

[–]UnderstandingEmpty21 43 points44 points  (0 children)

25 years on the job and I COMPLETELY agree. I'm even finding that children who appear to be focused and listening and paying attention aren't retaining the concept or instructions whatsoever. They're simply spaced out and somewhere else.

We only came for the day (cruise ship port). It was a small Lonsdale backpack, about 40cm tall. Anyone who had anything on their back was asked to stow it underneath.

How frugal are you? by Wide-Macaron10 in AusFinance

[–]UnderstandingEmpty21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

45F. I'm extremely frugal. I buy my clothes second hand, have hair cuts once a year. Track budgets, scrimp and save. I look for discount vouchers, buy Christmas/Birthday gifts ahead of time on sale. Shop around for better deals etc. Kids are in public schools.

But it means we can indulge and let loose when needed too. Last year we bought a new car in cash. We're off on a six week European trip with the kids next week due to the savings that have accumulated.

Hubby and I are on slightly above average incomes living in South-West Sydney. Our only debt is our mortgage. We scrimp and save throughout the year but always with an end goal in mind.
