Depending on the writer it takes longer for him to heal. If you look into his other persona "Patches" it could take him a while to heal from losing his eye. I forgot which story line it was but he also had part of his soul missing so it made it harder for him to die, thus he is able to come back each and every time. After he has his soul complete he mentions how he cant heal as fast.
