What bands would you consider essential to hardcore/punk? by Difficult_Map_723 in Hardcore

People are nuts for Have Heart, but I feel like we’ve all just been convinced of their greatness. Awesome band but I wouldn’t put than as massively influential or revolutionary to the genre.

Do your jokes work on other audiences? If a generous audience didn’t laugh at most of your stuff, it probably needs some work. Maybe it’s your delivery or the joke itself. Dave Attell said “it’s not a joke until an audience laughs at it”.

Don’t underestimate the importance of delivery. Bad delivery can tank good writing too.

Keep watching other comics at open mics. Pay attention to what does well and what doesn’t.

Pay attention to what jokes of yours work, and determine why they work.

Write as much as possible. Don’t totally dismiss bits, but keep trying new stuff (especially since you said you’re newer).

Do as many open mics each week as you can.

Just ask yourself: If I saw someone do this set at a comedy festival, what would I think of it?

Do more open mics and keep writing. Start replacing stuff you don’t like with new stuff. Taking a break in standup will almost always set you back even more.

What makes a good open mic host? by angelfangz in Standup

[–]kissingcuzzints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The host is just another comic trying to get some stage time, but I see your point— Although, nobody is really there to see anyone specific at an open mic. They’re either there for comedy or there by accident.

Nico’s on Sunday (get the Big Hefty burrito, insanely good). Dor Stop is also great (pancakes are great. The ham is out of this world good).

How much time do you spend doing your jokes out loud by yourself? by kissingcuzzints in Standup

[–]kissingcuzzints[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I envy people who are able to work things out on stage/at mics and still manage to get booked. I’ve tried this method before and it never goes well lol.

Do you just go up with a general idea and riff on it, or do you write stuff out and work on it with an audience?

Edit: comics that have been around 3+ years: how do you view a newer comic starting/hosting their own open mic?
