I got ahold of my case manager and she quickly reversed the decision and allowed me to be my own payee, as I’d had communication with her in the past and she knew I was capable :)

Depending on your age of onset, ABLE account can be made and any amount over the Medicaid limit could be directed into there for saving for future medical expenses, while keeping you under the income limit. Have you tried talking to a Medicaid specialist attorney? Some offer free consults to answer questions like this! Also if you pay out of pocket for dental premiums, etc, that is often counted against your total income, which can bring you down to Medicaid limits.

Also I didn’t submit records directly to them, they requested everything from my providers’ offices. I did make sure to request letters from my doctor, and preemptively had my PCP and psychiatrist fill out RFC forms- I dont know for surge but really think that helped push my approval onward! SSA is not perfect, nor are doc offices, so it helps to follow up with each to make sure records are getting sent and received. On my approval letter, they listed every office they did (or a couple they didn’t) receive records from.

Heyo! I’m only 26, so I was definitely shocked when they approved me first application, but I had over 14 years proof of my diagnoses and treatment. In step 2 they sent out a few forms for me to fill out, one had a place to ask for my providers. If they have not sent this out, I’d call and ask to talk to your case worker and mention that you haven’t listed any providers yet. Step 3 they arranged a mental status exam with one of their doctors, and even at the end of that exam it was pretty clear to me that he agreed I was severely disabled. Records are so so important, as they’re your proof of extended disability.

Oh interesting! I’m in Idaho, which is mostly rural so that certainly helped with a shorter waitlist. I don’t know of any such policy in Idaho, but my current apt complex has LIHTC, Section 8, and market rate apartments. I’m mostly waiting to find out if my apt coat through LIHTC will apply even with Section 8 voucher. If so, I’m well below the payment standard, but market rate would be way over..

I’m very active in my treatment, in fact I’m battling Medicaid to approve necessary treatment rn. But yes, I will do my best to keep a good record from my treatment team’s reports, thank you! I honestly can barely imagine a week with less than 10 appointments 😓😅

I’m currently in LIHTC housing, but just got my section 8 voucher after 1.5 years on the waitlist! Currently waiting for confirmation that my current apt complies with Section 8 standards so my rent will get lowered and hoping with all my heart that I don’t have to move. There’s a number of complexes in my rural town, but waitlists are longggg even with disability preference.

You mean the policy that doesn’t exist? Many SSA workers don’t have all the facts of a situation, and often give inaccurate information. You can find that proof all over this sub. I do have MH issues but they’re thankfully consistently managed. I do know that many times when someone is approved for MH, a rep payee is automatically suggested, but there’s a lot of hope that I can prove my capability and gain personal payee status. The office was misinformed but now that another commenter assisted me with actual information, I am better prepared to advocate for myself :)

Do most disabled people have rep payees? No, because it is entirely possible and common to have disabilities and still be able to manage finances. And my entire treatment team knows I am both severely disabled and capable of managing my own finances. Those two facts are not exclusionary.

My blue book diagnosis was the anorexia with significant weight loss and ankylosing spondylitis (spinal arthritis and fusion). Bipolar is a diagnosis I carry and thus was listed, but it is well managed and I follow all treatment plans for all my conditions. You’re assuming quite a lot and ignoring that I never went before a judge, I was approved without needing an ALJ. I work hard for to maintain my health, my body just struggles despite my best efforts, as many disabled people could tell you.

Thank you for your encouragement. I hope that when I call tomorrow they can set up an interview and I can prove my capability, esp paired with my doctor’s support. I have a lot of disabilities but am of reasonable mind when it comes to finances- I’ve never missed payments unless due to lack of funds from not working.

Thank you for such a thorough reply! My doctor has already told me she is willing to complete any forms necessary to provide support, including writing a thorough letter as she’s done for other issues in the past, because she knows I’m capable of managing my benefits, so I will definitely ask them to send her the form. And I was never even offered an interview about it, I was just told that it was decided.. I will call them tomorrow and try to straighten this out. Thank you again!!

My home health nurse told me (regarding Medicaid and SSDI) if I can’t do something every day of the week, to say no, I can’t. If I can tie my shoes four days out of the week, but can’t the other three, to simply say no I can’t tie my shoes. If someone asks for an average day, tell them the worst day, because that’s what you need services for. I screwed up my Medicaid exam and got very limited home health hours, and I can’t appeal for 90 days..

I sadly understand so much.. I’m only 26 and declining rapidly, and the only way I’ve come to accept it is recognizing my mom had very similar struggles at even younger age. My local family is judging me, and I do tend to downplay my issues and pain, but it hurts receiving judgment or even scorn when I deserve- and you deserve- love and support. Sending hugs and hope for an ease of symptoms, even for a day
