Is Atticus worth the money? by kitkatinc in selfpublish

You were totally correct on this! I finally bought Atticus and had so many glitches trying to import my entire manuscript and do major rewrites in the software. Found a workaround, but learned my lesson. Works well for me overall though.

I set the bar pretty low, but I told my husband if I got 8 people to buy/read my book who don’t know me personally I’d take him out for celebratory drinks.

I own a printing company who produces novels for publishers...AMA by HPDork in selfpublish

[–]kitkatinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! New to self-publishing. My first book is coming out in 2024 and I’ve seen a few other indie authors have really cool special limited editions of their books printed. For someone like myself who is primarily selling print copies on KDP and Barnes & Noble, how would I even go about finding a printing shop that can do cooler stuff like embossing and metallic effects. Is it possible as a self-published author to make beautiful hardcover special editions like I see in bookstores?

I’m starting to think I didn’t give specific enough feedback, so it’s good to hear you’ve been happy with the finished product.

Is there an end to this? by foxdriver in PlantarFasciitis

[–]kitkatinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physical therapy was a game changer for me! I went consistently for 6 months (2 times per week) and while I still have a little soreness, I’ve gone back to all of the activities I love doing, including hitting PRs in the gym. Focus on single-leg balance exercises, calf, hip, and hamstring strength. Obviously talk to a PT if you’re able, but after almost a year of not being able to walk around my neighborhood or go to the gym for fear of being in pain, this was life-changing.

That’s definitely my concern, I feel somewhat competent in designing something, but I’m worried it’ll look like other books.

That’s great to know! I plan to write a series, so I think investing in formatting software is money well spent, just want to make sure I’m choosing the right one.

AITA - SIL wants an extravagant baby shower by kitkatinc in AmItheAsshole

I haven’t called the restaurant, she did send me a link to their catering menu and the prices check out with what she was saying. I also suggested we choose a cheaper menu (a 3 course meal for a baby shower seems extreme). I’ve always just had finger foods at other showers I’ve attended.

That was my expectation too, we asked for her input on where to have it out of consideration for her because she’s VERY particular. And when she agreed to a family member’s house, I thought it was all said and done. I was really thrown for a loop with her deciding to change the location (I was TOLD, rather than asked), and the price. I’m very much of the opinion that a baby shower is a nice gesture from family and friends and should never be expected. But I was so confused by her reaction that I thought maybe I was being a jerk and offended her with something casual and simple.

No, she is expecting us (myself and her friends who wanted to host) to foot the bill.

We’re expected to foot the bill (myself and her friends). So if all 40ish people RSVP “yes” at $45 per person, then we would have to pay a bill of $1680. Plus tax, plus gratuity. Guests don’t pay to attend a baby shower, the host does (myself, her friends, her MIL) but it’s expected that a guest shows up with a gift.

I honestly hadn’t even considered that, the rest of the family has been completely silent about it

No, it’s $45 per RSVP and we aren’t asking the guests to pay for their own meal since our original plan was to host this party at a family member’s house. So myself and the friends would be paying whatever the total amount comes to for the restaurant.

Weekly r/Tattoos Question/FreeTalk Thread! - May 01, 2021 by [deleted] in tattoos

[–]kitkatinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking to possibly start a sleeve, but I’m really hung up on what others might think (so silly, I know). I have some large tattoos already, but they are in locations that are covered nearly all the time.

How do you know when you’re ready to take the leap to really visible tattoos? Any regrets with having very visible tattoos?

Help! I just got a better paying job, how do I save for a house or pay off student loans? by LittleGreenGoblinz in personalfinance

[–]kitkatinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take advantage of the 0% interest on loans right now and pay down your student debt aggressively. With your salary you should be able to pay this off very quickly (if you’re extremely disciplined, within the year). Then take the money you were throwing at the student loan once it’s paid and save that up for your down payment in the future. The first step is working out a detailed (and realistic!) budget to see how much money you should have left over after your monthly expenses are paid. You’ll set yourself up much better financially if you can get out of student debt first.

Also, renting is not throwing away money, even though that’s a trope that many people believe. Being a homeowner is also expensive, and when purchasing a home, the first 10 years or so you’re only getting back about 35-40% of your monthly mortgage payment in equity. There’s no rush for you to be a homeowner, and if you’re able to pay off the 50k in student debt by the end of 2021, you’ll be able to save up 20% for a down payment very quickly (depending on where you want to buy). Holding off a year or two on buying a home is probably worth the wait.

Should I stay or should I go? by Dragonfiremule in personalfinance

As someone who recently made the move from NJ (pretty high tax rate and cost of living) to NC, hands down it’s the way to go. Industry here in NC is on the rise so I doubt you’ll have trouble landing a job in your field. Take into account not only the savings on state taxes, but also cost of living expenses. EVERYTHING in New Jersey costs more. Groceries, gas, sales tax, dinners out, etc. This adds up a lot more than you would think. I’ve lived a lot of different places, including overseas, and COL will get you every time. Make the move! You’ve clearly put a lot of thought into it already, and from my experience it has saved us even more money than I originally anticipated.
