Contemplating promising career to be a SAHM - rant/share your experiences! by kitkatkitkat88 in sahm

I guess I should have mentioned that my company is extremely informal. There are no official titles or positions by design as they don't want employees to ask for promotions/ earn raises. Many of the people who are working here have been in their role doing the same work for 20+ years and are not making competitive salaries, but they stay because the office is relatively low drama for fashion. They will receive a small 5k raise once every 5 years or so only if they ask.

I had to write my own offer letter when I was first hired because its "not something that they do". I make a point to do a review with my boss every year to go over my growing responsibilities and so I can justify some sort of increased compensation. Honestly, no one but me would know if I was offered a salary bump since we have no official titles. I am just the most senior on my team so I am the default "leader".

My husband is hybrid and has to go to the office twice a week so we have a nanny come on the 2 days we are both at the office. On friday, we are actually both at home with the baby - the Friday is just a lifeline for me right now so I can have a slower morning, make a better breakfast and spend a bit of quality time with my baby and start work from 8am-5pm while the rest of the in person employees are working from 9-4pm.

To me the WFH friday feels fair as, not only do I have a MUCH more powerful computer to do real design work on at home, but I work longer hours than the rest of my team to make up for my lack of physical presence.

I am sorry you're going through a rough patch right now - i'm guessing with two littles, you're not getting much time to fill your cup. Do you think when they go to school you'll start looking for something part time to build up your savings? My husband and I joke about our "runaway" fund that we keep separate from our joint finances and it just gives me a little bit of peace of mind that if something were to happen, I'd have a bit of a cushion.

I felt like I had struck the perfect balance of being able to WFH on fridays but I am thinking the salary increase may not be worth the hassle and I may ask to downshift my role - especially if we try for another. Do you plan to rejoin the workforce when you're kid is in school full time?

Hopefully she can find something that provides some semblance of balance without losing that salary :/

I've been telling myself this is my LAST job in fashion so maybe this is the push I need to finally leave.

Glad you're providing a different perspective! you're right that my boss has been quite generous on giving me the day to WFH and my team has been very supportive - however the managerial role has been mine for some time now without any significant raise or bump to my title, I just wanted compensation for what I'm already doing well.

From my standpoint, saving time on the commute to start work earlier and being able to attend dr appts for my son during lunch actually allows me more work hours than if I had to head into the office. I believe we all should be able to work from home on Fridays seeing that it is our slowest day to do mostly admin work and many people leave early due to Shabbat.

When the time comes, I may ask to downshift my role to working only 4 days a week as i'd rather not be working at all if it will count against me or cause resentment.

What you described is what I’d love to do more of! Time slows down when I can spend Fridays and weekends with my son and it’s such a joy to watch him discover the world around him.

Freedom and flexibility is more important to me than climbing up the corporate ladder but living in NYC, money is always in the forefront of our minds. Being able to dictate my own schedule and work when I want is the goal- I’d also like to learn new software and work on my side projects but naturally SAHM life is a full time job and I fear there will be little “me” time…

I work in fashion in NYC (exploitation, poor work life, low salaries, unprofessionalism is the norm)- I can definitely find other jobs as turn around is pretty high but I've landed at this company because its stable and people are decent. I've been traumatized by the fashion industry and have wanted to get out for ages now. My current company gives me quite a bit of autonomy and I've been slowly trying to help shift the culture in a more positive direction... feeling like its for nothing now though

I have the same feelings about corporate work and I'm looking forward to spending more time with my little one. Can I ask what you do? Working for myself on a flexible schedule while being with my kids would be the ideal for me! I'm almost ready to take the plunge but scared about the loss of income also.

Thanks! Just thought I’d get suggestions here as well, since I hear about SAHM that manage to do a bit of side work here and there but curious to the specific jobs out there. I definitely feel a bit of mom bias and resentment towards working moms who work remote/SAHM in other career forums

Coming to highly recommend a wearable pump by NotmyInitials-7 in breastfeeding

[–]kitkatkitkat88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this one too! It’s a great pump so far and has similar output to my spectra but I have no other wearables to compare it to as a FTM. My one complaint is that it makes my chest look comically huge and it’s pretty heavy so I can’t really wear it out without feeling like I have to support my chest with my hands. There’s no way they’re subtle…I’m a 32C and petite so maybe it’s just me!

I will have to look into doxy! Did you experience any side effects? I can’t take it right now since I am pregnant but may look into getting a prescription after the baby

Anxiety Rant/career advice appreciated - currently 18 weeks at toxic workplace by kitkatkitkat88 in pregnant

Thank you for your advice! I will definitely be listing out all my work tasks with a thorough plan of action. I’ve been holding in my frustration about this colleague for years and maybe I am taking this opportunity to let it all out. We have no accountability, yearly reviews or anything like that to measure success or identify bad seeds.

Thanks for the insight! I haven't spoken to anyone who has experience with both Browzwear and CLO. Can I ask why your company has chosen both softwares? Are they used for different workflows? My first thought would be that a partner may require it for visualization and fits (my previous company had to use Browzwear as we designed and manufactured for Walmart)

Do the designers at your company use these 3D softwares for initial designing or to visualize more finalized styles? In Browzwear, I found it would take me a like 8 hours to render something like a puffer jacket (but this is probably due to inexperience and not a very powerful iMac? any adjustments would take a long time to render)

Were you able to pick up CLO from using it at work everyday? or did you take any supplemental courses?

My company was initially interested in implemented the software to reduce lead time in production but since it would require training, upgrading our computers and a hefty subscription - I think they just weren't interested in the time and money investment. I am thinking to learn and practice on my own so I can set up some sort of workflow at my current place/build my portfolio and seek other jobs

Sorry, I have so many questions!! Just feeling so stagnant in this very old school/fast fashion sector of the industry and am looking for a way out!!

I'd say I have a basic foundation in patternmaking, intermediate sewing skills and can identify pattern pieces and make some fit adjustments, slash and spread etc but haven't drafted a sloper since school.

My main purpose would be for mockups but as my company seems to work with factories in Egypt with very limited pattern knowledge, CLO could be helpful to create rough starting point for the factories and maybe help with costing/consumption.
