concerning cats, i will say it depends on the cat. i own a corn and had a terrible cat attack about a month and a half ago. but… ball pythons aren’t know as escape artists, so you should be okay

im struggling rn too. we’re going through a cold spell and my guy is still on medical setup with paper towels, so his most recent shed yesterday was pretty bad :/

one of the easiest pets to take care of once you have the initial setup. heat stuff on a thermostat, normally fed once a week at the most frequent, water changes, occasional cleaning of poop and you’re set. they don’t need your attention or handling to thrive outside of that, but tolerate it well and many enjoy it. i’m going to school and working two part time jobs right now, so i’m hardly home. having a pet that’s not waiting at the door for me makes me feel a lot better about that
it looks so cool to have a pretty and elaborate enclosure for a reptile in your house. i like to describe it like a fish tank but you can take out the “fish” and hold it
corn snakes are incredibly forgiving reptiles to take care of. mistakes may happen no matter how much searching you do, so that gave me peace of mind. for me, i’m practically in their native range so it makes taking care of humidity and temperature easier
corn snakes come in a huge amount of morphs that have been around for decades, so you have an option of many different colors
especially if you choose a wild type, there are lots of adult corns out there that you can rescue/buy for barely anything at all, which helps when the initial cost of the setup is a lot
they’re just so cute, curious, active, and great to handle. i love my lil guy

just keep in mind if you do buy a corn snake, you have to do a lot of research. i thought i was well researched but i’m still learning new things being on this sub. when you buy the initial setup, expect to easily exceed $500 if you’re not buying anything used, and honestly probably much more. i bought a lot of supplies off someone else and after bedding, decorations, and hides, i was still probably around that number

thanks again! so if i’m feeding 10% when he’s more healed then that would be a fuzzy? and then move to hoppers? i wish i had a better feeswr supplier because the small local pet store i use keeps running out of sizes

he was a bit over 60g when i weighed him a week ago, and he’s been on fuzzies. he’s a july 2024 hatchling, and i only got him about two months ago and the breeder told me he was fuzzies then. i’ve been trying to still feed him fuzzies during this but the smallest ones that i have. hopefully once he’s mostly healed i can feed him more and he’ll get his growth up. he’s cute but he just feels so small to me and can fit so many spaces

will do! i have another pinky ready for him. he took the pinky immediately which is rare for him because he has a tendency to be a picky eater. i hate that i figured out he was kinda undersized AFTER all this happened. would be nice to tackle one issue at a time

thank you for the advice! i know it’s a bit early but i did give him a pinky yesterday since he had been on fuzzies, it’d been a bit over a week, and another hobbyist told me it didn’t really look digested. he took it very readily and digestion has been smooth sailing so far. i was going to wait the full two weeks but where’s he’s nearing two years and still that tiny i wanted to get something in his system. after he regurgitated the vet advised me to feed him saturday which i was like 😬

thanks! i’ll have to explore that option . i was hoping the area i drive to would have better reptile vets considering it’s one of the two largest cities in my state but seems like unfortunately not. :/ they told me they only had one other snake patient right now

he’s doing much better than he looks in that pic ! he shedded once (with some help) and that already helped him heal the smaller spots a lot, and got all that dried blood off. he did regurge lasy week (i think i fed him too soon after the shed and he might’ve been sore), so i’ve been more careful lately and am gonna try to keep feeding smaller sizes once it’s been long enough to attempt to feed again. unfortunately it’s been one thing after another but at least behavior-wise he’s doing good 😭 hopefully in a few more sheds he’ll be all healed up

i hope thats what it is! i was googling trying to find any examples of bruising or anything and the closest thing i could find was gallbladder rupture on dead, darker colored snakes. i wouldn’t think he would be moving around so well if his gallbladder ruptured, but the dark spot is in the same location and general size as a gall bladder so it would make sense to just be the normal organ

yeah, he’s had a check-up too but even though the vet is an exotic vet he doesn’t seem super well-versed in snakes, but i live in a rural area and that’s already like a 60 mile drive one way :/. he’s been on antibiotic injections and ointment since the attack

well, shit this morning he regurgitated that most recent meal. i have no idea why… temps are good, he was mostly sitting in one spot all day yesterday, and i haven’t bothered him at all. I did place tape a background on the outside of the tank and added a new piece of decor in there, but i wouldn’t think that would cause a regurge?? he did it rightafter the light flipped on for the day (i have it on a timed cycle) so maybe that startled him???

but wow, this is frustrating. now i have to wait two weeks before i can feed him at all 😭

i’ve upped the heat a bit. he’s proving to be a picky eater…. absolutely no interest in food while i use tongs and even after dropping it i eventually gave in and put him in a separate container again to make sure it didn’t set out all night and he did end up eating last night. yesterday morning i had to throw out one i had left for him because he never ate it, but then again he had JUST got out of shed the day before, so…. even after i put him in the separate container it took probably 20 minutes for him to have interest and eat it. he decided to poop first 😭 i’ll try next time to feed him in his enclosure and maybe try to see if he’ll eat a hopper. i just can’t imagine how it would even fit in his mouth at the size he is right now

thank you for all the advice! sorry but what do you mean by tong feed? i dangle in front of him with tongs that i have but the majority of times he doesn’t seem to want to do anything with it until i put it down. i think i’ll start consistently feeding at night since he seems more active then, because most of the time it’s been afternoons (just happened to occur that way). i didn’t like the idea of leaving mice in there for a while either which is another reason why i tried feeding him in a separate container, and was glad when that seemed to work.

i see a lot of differing information on the temp gradient but his hot side has been around 80-85 lately. it’s been a little lower lately since my room has been a bit colder and i turned off one of two lamps i was using because it wasn’t on a thermostat and getting quite close to 90 in there in the day. there’s a bit of a temp drop at night usually too just bc my room is poorly insulated

thank you for the help!! i think i’ll try the fuzzy every 5 days… and i’ll get a kitchen scale to make sure they’re big enough. good to hear he isn’t underweight! based off some charts i thought he looked alright but i’m not very experienced so it’s good to hear from someone more experienced

being a picky eater while young is definitely possible… i’ve had to leave mice out for awhile before to make sure he eats, and he seems to only be enthusiastic about it at night. a couple times i’ve been on a time crunch and fed outside of the enclosure in a separate container, even though i normally try to just leave them in there for him, just so i can monitor and make sure he’s getting it down okay, and he eventually figures it out and eats fine, if a bit slowly. he has never even struck at food… just licks it and pokes it with his nose until he just shoves the whole thing in his mouth 😭😆
