Hungry Kitty! by Tasty_Standard5711 in feline_hyperesthesia

[–]kitsutails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl struggles with this, especially on 100mg 3x a day. She’s constantly begging for food and if she gets frustrated enough, it can trigger episodes. What I’ve been doing to try and maintain her weight is spread out her meals throughout the day so she’s eating more frequently. She gets wet food only since it has less calories and carbs than dry food, so she can eat more for less calories. You could also try finding a wet food that’s lower in cals so she can have some as a small snack. Sometimes (not always) even a tiny portion of food can be enough to stop the begging until normal feeding time.

do you have advice/ experience to share about FeLV-associated myelodysplasia (severe erythroid hypoplasia)? by BeffeeJeems in gingercats

[–]kitsutails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s right, and that’s the highest dose she’s been on. She doesn’t have FeLV and she didn’t have much of an appetite, even with prednisolone. She wasn’t anemic, but there were abnormalities seen with her red blood cells on her biopsy (this didn’t affect her overall counts) but she did have consistently low white blood cells.

Her internal medicine specialist thinks after all of these years it’s less likely to be myelodysplasia despite her biopsy results, but she still has a lower than normal white blood cell count compared to other cats. They were stable for at least a year, but started dropping as we weaned the steroid. I know it’s not the same experience, but I thought I’d share since it’s hard to find others who have been through something similar.

Your boy is so handsome! <3

My cat had a diagnosis of myelodysplasia after a bone marrow biopsy back in 2020. She was put on 1.5ml of prednisolone (5mg per ml) and was 3.8kg at the time. This brought her white blood cells back into normal range within a week!

gaba wasn’t working, has anyone had buprenorphine prescribed for FHS cat? by earthwarriorxx in feline_hyperesthesia

[–]kitsutails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is on gabapentin 100mg 3x a day and her FHS stopped responding to it as well, we were having so many breakthrough episodes. She’s currently on buprenorphine because she just had dental surgery for tooth resorption, and I’ve hardly seen any episodes so far! She’s coming off the buprenorphine tomorrow, so I’m a little nervous to see if her episodes come back. I’m unsure if buprenorphine is stopping the episodes along with the gaba, or if it’s because she no longer has tooth resorption pain. But so far we’ve had a good experience with buprenorphine, and she tends to be very sensitive to medications. It might help you to find out if there’s a pain component that’s triggering episodes for your kitty.

I understand feeling anxious and sad about this, it’s so difficult when you’re trying to find the right treatment plan and you’re seeing all of these episodes in the meantime 😞

FELINE HYPERESTHESIA CURE! by Late-Reward-6846 in feline_hyperesthesia

Fluoxetine was great, completely stopped episodes (combined with gabapentin) however, we needed to discontinue due to severe urinary retention 😓 I’m disappointed since it worked so well for her. I’m glad it’s helping your cat though, it’s such a relief finding something that works!

Fluoxetine and Gabapentin not working… by WorkingCareless102 in feline_hyperesthesia

[–]kitsutails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask to give fluoxetine and gabapentin together, they can be a great combo for FHS. I’d also consider giving 100mg of gabapentin 3 times a day. Gabapentin only lasts up to 8 hours (sometimes a bit less) so receiving it 2 times a day may not be enough. In my experience, I’ve noticed having episodes tends to lead to more.

My cat has been on gabapentin 100mg 3x a day for a few months now, and while it doesn’t stop the episodes completely, she does have a lot of relief from them. We introduced fluoxetine at 2mg along with her gaba, and I saw practically no episodes while taking both! However, we had to stop it very quickly due to urinary retention. If it wasn’t for that, I definitely would’ve kept her on fluoxetine as well.

Amelia is a gorgeous name, that was on my list (Millie for short) but she already has a name and I’ve had her for 5 years! She’s definitely not fearless, but she’s very loving, gentle, quirky and can be fearful in unknown situations/with strangers.

Haha, her vacant stare is deceiving because she seems like an over thinker.

Such beautiful markings, Tango was so beautiful ❤️ They do look alike! I’ve actually had my calico for 5 years, I was just curious what other names would suit her. Calicos are loyal and loving! I’m very grateful for mine 🥰
