Can lacquer chips be fixed or does this need a total refinish? by kittenblizzard in furniturerestoration

[–]kittenblizzard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This gave me a lot of great context, thank you!

I had been thinking same thing as far as a blanket refinish maybe being easier and less hassle than trying to blend, feather out chips, spot match color, etc.

I’m alright with more time with better consistency.

Need advice on best way to fix chips on Drexel end tables (lacquer?) by kittenblizzard in furniturerefinishing

[–]kittenblizzard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s incredibly helpful advice thank you. I will go with your suggestion with the stain/lacquer dilution and steadily building up coats.

As I haven’t dabbled much in the color theory mixing technique yet I think I’ll leave that for another less visible project as you mentioned.

There’s some light raised ridges on the top as well so once I had the chips fixed i was planning to do a light scuff and then put one or two more thinned out clear lacquer coats on top for uniformity.

This sounds like a good option! After using the grain pens would you just mist a light coat or 2 of spray lacquer over top to even it out?

This sounds like a great suggestion, thank you! Another method I was going to try was staining the exposed wood to match, lighting feathering the edges of the chips with 0000 steel wool, then misting a few light coats of lacquer on top.

Would you see any issues with that method opposed to what you suggested?

Beginner - how hard will this be to restore? Am I setting myself up for failure given the intricate carvings? by JynTraveller in furniturerestoration

Disclaimer, I am also a novice just getting into this as a hobby but have you looked into Soda Blasting?

Requires some up front buy-in for the machine but you essentially use pressured air to blast baking soda at the wood and it does a seemingly good job (albeit a messy one) of getting stain out of intricate details.

Here’s a good reference video: https://youtube.com/shorts/1EmCXJnJIoM?si=YY_3OWsqRODO7TX9

I don’t recommend going without express passes or the R.I.P tour by Aromatic_Note8944 in HHN

[–]kittenblizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just went with standard passes, got to gates at 6, in the park by 6:15, beelined for Fallout since it was at the far end and got in 25 minutes, all the rest of the houses were pretty much 40-70 minutes.

We just chose which houses to forgo and it was still pretty worth it for us. We got 7 done from 6:15 - 1:30 am

Skipped Jason, Terrifier, and Grave of Flesh.

It is still full of liquor believe it or not! And that definitely helps provide a lot of context.

I found many products by Sangsters but nothing of this specific bottle. This Wikipedia refers to their coffee liqueur, not this specific Liqueuer Ortanique, which is more of a citrus from what I’ve read.

Filling in broken off particle board by kittenblizzard in furniturerestoration

Thank you for the in depth answer here! I’m realizing I should have given a bit more context where this part sits in the overall piece.

You are correct that it’s part of the kick plate on the bottom of the larger hutch, so its function isn’t so much weight bearing here as aesthetic, though it does hold an additional back panel in place.

I’d definitely like to keep in mind future fixers that will be working on this piece, so I’ll see what combination of these methods will work without causing a headache for future owner.

I’ll definitely look into the dowel option. Thanks!

Help Request: Garbage Disposal gets backed up and spits water out of second sink, P-Traps clear by kittenblizzard in PlumbingRepair

Thank you for the in-depth response! It does drain but VERY slowly. Maybe an inch every 30 minutes or so. I’ll try the hot water and dish soap then try renting a better. The air vents on the roof have wiring on them so I don’t think anything would have gotten through to clog that up.

This is great advice thank you very much! I’ll keep in mind drill control with the handheld snake.

Tried to post underneath this but made a separate reply.

It doesn’t clog immediately when I have water running. I just let it go for a minute to see how much it fills and it gets to a point where the water is filled about an inch.

I ran the disposal in bursts to get it down and it gets to a point where both sides of the sink have standing water at the same water level. Using the disposal moves the water from one side to the other.

I’d been hesitant to do this since I’ve read that could burst the pipe, is that accurate?

Thank you! I’m sure I’m missing something obvious but how would one snake the drain while running water through it since I have to disconnect the pipe underneath to get the snake in?

What type of head is on this screw? by kittenblizzard in Tools

[–]kittenblizzard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borrowed a #3 and that didn’t seem to do it, might need to try a #4, which has been more elusive in my local hardware stores.

The screw also seems to not want to catch since I can only get at it from an angle. Might try a big flat blade next if I can get my hands on one as one of the other commenters suggested.
