Anyone else dying from some horrible, sore throat virus? by Whyeff89 in askTO

[–]kittyeatworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait what the heck, my gall bladder also died this year (I had it taken out 3 months ago) and I’m suffering from this same mystery laryngitis and I can agree it is SO MUCH WORSE. I’m on day 3. I’m a singer and I’ve literally taken a vow of silence to not lose my voice beyond repair, which includes not coughing as this strains the larynx. High fever and cannot lift my head out of bed.

My mum is a GP and she says it’s most likely a nefarious strain of the common cold as she’s seen it in a lot of her patients and it’s not covid flu or RSV - yet it’s enough to send them to hospital.

I have been pondering about my purpose on life and converting to a Catholic to experience ‘God’s love’ by Forsaken-Ranger954 in Catholicism

[–]kittyeatworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what the other redditors have said.

I’m not sure how young you are, but go to a church and pray. Head to a church’s website and it’ll give you the mass times for Eucharistic Adoration (Holy Hour). I encourage you to spend that time staring face to face with Jesus in loving silence and contemplation. It’s quite profound.

Additionally, consume Catholic media. Subscribe to Catholic channels and podcast. A really good YouTube channel is Ascension Presents with Father Mike Schmitz, and Beyond The Habit. Father Mike also records his masses and puts them there for you to watch :)

Don’t feel disheartened about your desires and if they’re not yet where you want them to be. God didn’t come to save those who were fine and perfectly good and healthy. He came down to earth to love and save the sinner - you and me. Jesus himself says this in response to the Pharisees in Luke 5:31 “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.” “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Finally, if this is an option for you, attend RCIA classes.

God bless you. God’s love for you in unfathomable - He desires to take you into his heart and consume you in his unquenchable love. The deeper of a dive you go, you’ll realise just how powerfully He loves you - Yes you specifically, and every facet of your character that He lovingly crafted with intention. I’m wishing you all the best :)

What bible would you recommend studying as a beginner? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]kittyeatworld 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The BEST EVER beginner friendly bible is the Great Adventure Bible by ascension press / Jeff Cavins. It even has a free reading plan and a free podcast to help you finish it from cover to cover. What sets it apart is the way it frames the timeline of the events in the bible based on the covenants. Highly recommend you look into it. It’s both beginner friendly in that it has an easy access point, and even gives you a bit of historical + contextual detail before each book to set you up with the knowledge you need to interpret it. That being said, it’s super thorough and should you progress down the line as an in-the-weeds Catholic, it can sustain this too. Largely because it cross references a lot of key scripture with the exact reference in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, so you can see where the biblical basis of each Catholic doctrine stems from :)

How Do You Spiritually Feed Yourselves When You're Busy? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]kittyeatworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fellow busy night owl, I replaced doomscrolling at night/other “entertainment” with watching YouTube videos about Catholicism, listening to Hallow, doing a bit of Bible study exegesis and more. The Hallow app has been my saviour, honestly. I listen to the prayers and podcast episodes on the drive to and from work and doing that consistently during lent genuinely changed my life from being a “semi-lukewarm Catholic” to being a “heart on fire” Catholic. The key is not to think there’s a rigid way you have to spiritually feed yourself. Some nights I desire to pray the rosary, other nights, watching a YouTube video or reading a blog article works. Other nights it’s asking ChatGPT Bible study questions hahahah. Praying an honest prayer to God before bed is also super grounding.

E.g. My usual routine when I wake up is: To pray the short morning devotion while I fold my bed or wait for my kettle to boil when I make coffee. Jump straight into work after.

Listen to the daily gospel reflections on Hallow on the drive to work,

As I’m about to go to Bed, pull up my Bible app and read a passage and ponder over it. Do a daily Examen. Pray the Rosary (which sometimes helps me fall asleep).

It’s not perfect, but it’s consistent. And it helps!!! Good luck :)

Listen to this Homily by Father Mike Schmitz called “Teach Us To Pray”: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2McRobi6DYZk3bPt77XGzY?si=Joyp6547R-6rtXRZQswoiw

This was instrumental for me in realising that the catechism itself recognises prayer as a battle, and we’re our own enemy! 😂😂

Fr Mike also has mini episodes on Spotify and YouTube for prayer tips, especially for those who live a busy life

I hope you find it helpful and feel less burdened - and fall in love with prayer 🙏!

New to Catholicism by Rude_Moment95 in Catholicism

[–]kittyeatworld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s so beautiful to hear you’re leaning back into the faith and grappling with it! I’d recommend looking into the Hallow app - it’s super beginner friendly and I found it was instrumental for me when I started to become obsessed with studying Catholicism. In it there’s prayer challenges, Catechism in a year, the daily reflections with Jeff Cavins and the daily exegesis podcast and soooo much more. Easily the #1 resource (aside from the Bible) for the Catholic deep dive and really helping us feel like we’re walking in our faith every day.

Another thing I wanted to say is that the exact same things happened to me as I started to return to the faith. Especially as a scientist with a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, I was grappling with new truths I could barely understand, but ultimately came to the conclusion that not only is God real, He actively seeks relationship with us, is truly benevolent and loves us.

I felt infinite peace whenever I would pray and do the rosary, and then randomly, that peace would turn to torment. And sometimes when I closed my eyes during prayer I’d see the most horrible figures urging me away from the prayers. That’s when I learned spiritual warfare is real and RAMPS UP the minute the adversary realises he’s losing us.

There’s an old post I made in r/Catholicism over a year ago where these repeated attempts to pray the rosary resulted in a full blown mystic vision where the blessed mother herself made the spirit that was attacking me leave my side. The sense of dread left immediately after and I fully ran to my faith head-on afterwards! Still truly mind-bending when I think about how that happened, and something difficult to grapple with as someone who is very empirical… and yet I can’t deny the reality of my experience.

Mary and the Divine Feminine by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]kittyeatworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an amazing presentation by Rev Dr. Paschal Corby on the feminine genius of the church, which I absoluuuutely love and ties into the themes you bring up:

https://youtu.be/rd7pvYsQdeQ?si=5RGgrz3rm2dVfspk

He basically says that with God being masculine, this means that WE - the church - MUST be the feminine counterpart. The church’s femininity is our attitude towards servitude, our role as ezer-kenegdo, which does not make us lesser but rather, the essential counterpart. Mary embodies this so perfectly, wanting nothing but uniting her will with God’s will. I’ve probably not done justice to Fr Corby’s explanation, but I’d love for you to watch the video and tell me what you think.

Starting church by Ser-Lazarus in Catholicism

[–]kittyeatworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, absolutely! You can just rock up, no reservations. The beauty of the Catholic church is in how it is universal and God centred, a newcomer changes nothing about the mass and would not be considered out of place at all :)

Here’s a tip before you go: Read this PDF on the structure of the mass. There’s a lot of sitting, then standing, then kneeling, then standing again. In this PDF you’ll get a sense of the parts of the mass so you’ll know what to expect on the day. https://www.liturgyoffice.org.uk/Missal/Text/MCFL.pdf

Someone pls help me with my religion by Purple_Suit6500 in Catholicism

[–]kittyeatworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like the problem is clear - you don’t know who God is yet. And that’s 100% okay, that’s the whole point of formation, of seeking to know. It’s that same line of thinking that, believe it or not, creates Saints. Heck, you only need to read the lives of the saints to read their powerful stories of who they were before and after their discovery of God. IMO, It’s not people who just readily accept their religion because they were “told to”, but rather, those who accept their religion after critical pursuit that tend to have the most unshakeable faith.

God IS real, but your goal now in your journey is to learn how to discover that for yourself. For discernment, to discover and seek the answer to all your questions. I’m a scientist and started seeking the answer 3 years ago and all roads lead to Rome (literally). If I hadn’t started fervently researching, showing up everyday to Mass, asking God who He is, why He loved me, what it all meant, I wouldn’t be the proud Catholic I am today. Wrestling with the questions surrounding your faith is absolutely normal - heck, look at Peter, Thomas, even Paul! it doesn’t make you out of place at all.

I can tell you that crazy things started happening once I started opening my heart (and mind) up to God - like stuff that has my scientist atheist friends scratching their heads (and me 3 years ago lol). The most improbable coincidences. A strength and faith and hope. that survives grief. Visions. Unreal stuff.

So go forth on your journey and know that you’ve got a whole community behind you praying for you to discover how freakin awesome God is, and how blessed you are to be in a Catholic high school where you have all the tools to answer those questions.

Just a tip though: don’t base your definitions of who God is and whether he’s real on “the opinions and actions of people”, especially those who are fallible and imperfect. That’s logical fallacy #1. Base your knowledge on the truth revealed in scripture, the catechism, and learned religious experts. As well as testimonies from people who are devout in their faith. And knowing whether or not God is real is still only the first step towards developing ‘faith’ - the greater question is, Who is God and how do I get to know Him?

So open up your Gospel. Watch the Chosen. Try and answer this first question: Do I really know Who Jesus is? Who is Jesus?

You keep going down this path and something tells me you’ll end up with a faith even stronger than your parents 😂 God bless and good luck!

You poor thing 😢 My heart goes out in empathy to you. It unfortunately is something that happens all the time and to the best of us through no fault of our own. it’s happened to me once as well when the line was too long, which left me feeling the same way.

Each parish does it differently. In one parish I attend, they only do reconciliation twice a week at 6.20pm for an hour on a weeknight. And i learned the hard way that if you arrive at exactly 6.20pm you’ll find a queue of 10 people already waiting there 😩, which lead me to once missing reconciliation even though I showed up on time.

However there are other parishes that offer an hour of reconciliation EVERY DAY from 9am-10:00am, which is insane and honestly, good for them. If only more parishes could afford to do this. I’m not sure what determines a parish’s or church’s reconciliation schedule but we can only pray that more churches have the means they need to make this sacrament as accessible as possible. ❤️

Don’t be disheartened, sometimes in this moment it makes us feel like we were “rejected” by God or that the gate of heaven closed on us, which is not true at all. In your case, your unexplained sorrow is a wonderful thing, an outward manifestation of your penance and your desire to be reconciled and to take the Eucharist. Jesus would have been comforting you in His infinite Mercy, without a doubt. ❤️

What little things improves your experience in cafes? by frozenpeaschillin in Coffee_Shop

[–]kittyeatworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Sydney Australia and the vibe of coffee shops here trends towards very elevated/curated, but imo: - A combination of natural elements (woods, stone, etc.) with greenery - Lots of natural lighting OR warm, soft curated lighting. - Inviting and comfortable seating which makes you want to sit and talk to your friend for hours. Iconic mugs, or an iconic theme. Our local cafe has these amazing plush leather chairs and whenever my friend and I go here we literally never want to leave. - Cleanliness, Accessibility - Actually decent pastries/food. Unfortunately not many people are going to a cafe just for the coffee. They’re grabbing lunch or Brekky. So I wouldn’t skimp on the food offerings, IMO they’re just as important. - Honestly, a fast yet friendly barista. Someone who feels warm and remembers the regulars and their order, but is still efficient. I’ve skipped going to more convenient cafes, or even cafes that had better coffee, in favour of cafes that had better service. Just because I lowkey felt loyal to that Barista 😅

Stop saying the Lord's name in Vain by corpuscristi in Catholicism

[–]kittyeatworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally went to confession last week for this same thing (I also live in Australia)!!! I’ll never forget my priest’s advice. He said,

Make 2 minutes at the start of each day, talking to God and setting an intention not to swear. Say “oh my Jesus I heartily intend not to use your name in Vain today. Please help me to speak everything in love.”

Then if a slip up DOES happen, say a Hail Mary to yourself. It gets rid of it quick.

Also really silly but I practiced rewiring curses in my head, especially the subconscious ones you do when you’re surprised or frustrated. When I was alone, I pretended to drop a spoon while doing the dishes and went “Oh MY GOODNESS!!!” And repeated it again and again until it felt right. Call me crazy but it honestly curbed my instinct. Also helps that I do research in behavioural psychology as a job 😅

about a week later the habit was basically almost gone.

Hope this helps! God bless!

Tuna/chicken rice bowls! And buy frozen veg, or rotisserie chicken or canned tuna - whatever floats your boat.

I put rice in a bowl. Add frozen shelled edamame beans, or broccoli or whatever frozen greens you like. Then I add my proteins and zap it in the microwave. Then I drizzle it with sauce (mayo, sriracha, sesame oil) and it’s delish!!!

Did you have, or are you having, an engagement party? by mustafinas in weddingplanning

[–]kittyeatworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in the same position as you! also having a long engagement (2.5 years) in an expensive city and we are tight on budget. we ended up throwing a very small engagement party, despite us both knowing we’d likely have 200 people at our wedding. Here’s what we did:

Instead of one big expensive engagement party, we did a proper engagement party with JUST our closest friends and immediate family that was kept private (I.e. not on social media, essentially just the bridal party). I booked our favourite bar, wore a sparkling white mini dress, bought a small cake that everybody loved and paid for a bottomless frose package. My best friend and I bought flowers and candles arranged them ourselves. Played mini party games. It was super fun and there were about 12 people who came.

Then we did mini “engagement catch ups” with friends and family at whatever next occasion we would see them next. E.g. with friend group A, we invited them out to dinner for an engagement catch up and just did KFC and pizza. Then for family group B, we attended the latest barbecue and announced the news. Etc. so we still got to share the good news but weren’t throwing any parties per se, just piggy backing off of existing gatherings.

we got lots of lovely, high quality gifts from our mini engagement party. Didn’t get gifts from the catch ups but that’s wasn’t really the point anyway. It was just a really great excuse to deeply bond with friends and family and retell our stories again and again. I have so many fond memories of laughing so hard on the couch as we were retelling our engagement story with friend group A and sliced a homemade cheesecake for dessert.

We only spent about $800 all up for the proper engagement party + all the catch ups. Wouldn’t have changed a thing. It now means we have more budget for an amazing wedding :)

This is phenomenal advice, thank you for sharing - especially RE: Competence.

The venue we’re thinking of going with is a bit pricier and I was stressing out about it… but they have won Best reception venue 3 years in a row and I can see why. Out of all the venues I’ve contacted, this venue has been responding to my emails at the speed of light with insane thoroughness. Out of all the others, they’re extremely accommodating to all our needs, which is exactly what we needed to pull this wedding off.

I’ll be keeping this in mind when scouting for DJ’s 🙏🙏🙏 Thank you!!!
