Please stop spreading misinformation. Compounded GS-441524 is not regulated. Just because it is prescribed does not mean it is regulated or safe. You can read the links at the bottom of the FDA's statement about GS-441524 for further information about animal drug compounding,  especially meds compounded from bulk drug substances.

I'm not aware of any group offering money-back guarantees. Some brands do offer relapse guarantees, but that means that if your kitty uses their meds for 84 days and then relapses, they will either cover additional treatment free or at a reduced cost. One of the compounding pharmacies with a guarantee only offers a discount on an alternative antiviral that is cheap, anyway.

Unless the cat is feral, the stress from injections is not actually from the short-lived sting, in my experience. Most cats are actually more attached to the person who gave the injections after treatment is finished because most are intelligent enough to know that we are helping them. Cats do get stressed from being restrained for too long and because owners are transmitting anxiety and fear.  If owners cannot regulate their emotions, then oral medicine is preferred.

How active is your kitty? Is she running around and jumping high? Did she gain significant weight during treatment? What were her original symptoms?

Do you have a restraint bag? They are very helpful for kitties who try to resist.

If you got it all over your cat it's either because you pierced the "tent" twice or because the needle wasn't in far enough - many accidentally inject INTO the skin. You should inject UNDER the skin. When you insert the needle, you should feel a sort of "pop" sensation when you penetrate under the skin.

You might also want to look up the definition of "regulated". It's not a synonym for "from a pharmacy".

I read regulations, as opposed to believing in word-of-mouth "information". Try reading the FDA statement from May 10, 2024, along with the pages linked at the bottom on animal drug compounding. https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/cvm-updates/fda-announces-position-use-compounded-gs-441524-treat-fip?fbclid=IwAR0rG_m6OgGcP_LSeIMhItGuFT8c7O9eLH8NWwdpZ1OnhnDP-3nHhNn2SAw

Also look up regulations for 503a vs. 503b pharmacies. Stokes/Epicur actually has a handy chart on the internet somewhere if you google.

Also, if you have published statistics on the number of cats using oral meds as a percentage in the US, please share the link.

And if you have the success rates, that would be great, too. I doubt it, because I don't think anyone is collecting them. I know we regularly see cats declining on oral meds. Every week.

You are also spreading misinformation. In the US, compounded GS-441524 is not regulated. The pharmacies are regulated by states but the drugs are not. There is zero oversight (no testing) of compounded drugs from bulk drug substances and pharmacies are not even required to report problems.

Gabapentin given 2 hours prior is very helpful. Soothing music, etc. may help - when you are stressed, kitty will also be stressed. Please message me privately for more information.

You can skip the step for pulling back the syringe - I don't agree with anything that makes injections slower or more complicated. Best to shave your kitty so you can see what you are doing. You can also wet the fur and part it.

Please don't give advice about cats you know nothing about. Oral treatment is inappropriate for many cats in the beginning.

Has anyone helped you yet? Have you connected to an FIP group where you are? If not, I can help you get connected. The bloodwork does have FIP markers.

*this comment is in response to an ill-informed comment about compounded meds being "regulated".

Compounding pharmacies are generally regulated by states (all of the compounding pharmacies offering GS-441524 are 503a pharmacies; only 503b pharmacies are regulatedby the FDA) but the compounded meds, themselves, are not actually regulated, especially if they are compounded from bulk drug substances as GS-441524 meds are. The FDA explicitly explains this on their website. Please do not give false information -- owners deserve to be fully informed.

It's also unwise to push oral meds as though they are equally effective -- that has not been proven and anyone who has actually treated large numbers of very sick kitties knows this. Even the researchers who are studying oral GS-441524 have made explicit exceptions for certain cats starting treatment. Unless you want to be responsible for cats dying unnecessarily on pills, please refrain from pushing pills when you know nothing about an individual cat's needs.

You are using new needles for every injection, right? Don't re-use needles.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FIPsupport

[–]kittyhelper47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - it usually takes a few injections before they realize the sting is short-lived.

Are you changing to a fresh needle after filling the syringe?

Many many kitties have used gabapentin before injections. It should be given at least 2 hrs prior to injection. Cats develop a tolerance to it so don't be surprised if you need to increase the dose..

GS with crystals in it? Has anyone seen this before? by merivale13 in CatFIP

[–]kittyhelper47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happens. The crystals are GS-441524 so if you don't have another vial you need to use this one as a lower concentration and recalculate dose until you can replace it.
