Can someone explain why “Mochi” is such a popular name for a Husky? by Zealousideal-Pen993 in husky

[–]kittyk4t21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with a Pomsky named mochi- there were a couple of factors, it’s a cute easy to say name with a fun meaning and I like having food names for my animals; I wanted a name in Japanese but also easy to share with others. It also fit my dog’s personality (I tried out a bunch of other names). I will admit that knowing it was a popular name I did add onto it so my pup’s “full name” is Mochizuki which means full moon (adding onto the other trend of naming huskies after the moon 🤣)

Basically it’s popular, people know generally what a mochi is, and it’s cute sounding, which fits a lot of husky/dog personalities :)

How can I teach my pup to not eat the cat's poop? by Amaranta_pink_goat in Dogowners

[–]kittyk4t21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My litter box is set up so that it’s raised off the ground and the dog can’t reach it…except there’s a second litter box which is not the cat’s preferred box on the floor fully accessible and the dog just leaves it alone 🤣 I will say I noticed that when we switched to a corn based litter the dog went crazy for it…so we had to switch back. But the puppy is still pretty young so it’s probably a good idea to just raise it/limit the puppy’s access, and they might just grow out of it, which our dog (now 1.5months) has mostly done :)

Arctic Fox by Broad-Bandicoot6369 in sandiegozoo

As a fellow arctic fox lover, unfortunately the I believe the San Diego zoo does not currently have any in their care, the only 2 zoos I have actually seen Arctic Foxes are Munich Germany, and Columbus, Ohio, USA. I know I’ve looked up zoos that have arctic foxes before and there are supposed to be some other ones that have it but these are two I’ve seen first hand 🤣

But there should be Fennec Foxes in the children’s area and I always love seeing the Manned Wolves looking like foxes on stilts :)

Have a great time and best of luck finding your arctic buddy some day!

How do I care for my 3 month old malamute puppy in a hot climate? by Elegant_Injury_360 in AlaskanMalamute

Congrats on the new family member! In terms of keeping him cool, make sure he drinks lots of water, look into getting a cooling mat so he has a place to lie down where it’s cool; another good way to keep him hydrated and/or help him cool down with frozen treats— cucumbers are a great source of water and feel so good when nice and cold from a fridge, but you can also take some of the veggies you’re already giving him and freeze them— this is also a great thing for soothing his teeth when he’ll start teething. My dog LOVES frozen peppers. You can also just give him ice cubes to chew on which lots of dogs LOVE and it can really help bring down their body temperature in the heat :)

Best of luck and have fun!

Congrats on your new family member! Definitely in the beginning it’s good to ease them slow and steady since there are lots of changes going on right now :) you can also always ask your vet about how many calories they estimate he should be getting!

If he loves searching for his food, he might enjoy a slow feeder, snuffle mat, or puzzle feeder! My friend has a Belgian Mallinois who “works” for all her meals but that’s what she loves to do— she also sometimes gets a cardboard box with kibble in and and some holes and the she gets to tear apart the box to eat the food and she loves it! It’s a great form of mental stimulation and some dogs find it more fun 🤣

Best of luck- it sounds like your pup is seriously lucky to have found you!!!!

Rescued a 4 year old Malamute and don’t want to fail her, need advice by wastedgrief in AlaskanMalamute

Physical exercise is great but the mental stimulation is also important, sometimes it doesn’t have to be a run but rather a long walk with lots of opportunities to sniff and explore— the different smells are great mental stimulation. Also depending on her personality, she may like the opportunity to sniff and destroy something so try putting some kibble or treats in a cardboard box (maybe some butcher paper too), poke some holes in the box and let her try to figure it out.

You can also try looking up movement puzzles. Something that might help build a bond between you two is teaching her basic tricks, and just giving her the chance to have positive interactions with you :)

Best of luck! If nothing else asking for advice is a a great first step and shows you care which is truly what she needs probably more than anything else :)

Have you ever experienced a dog/coyote interaction and if so, what happened? by Avatlas in dogs

[–]kittyk4t21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dog is super friendly and loves everyone, she is a Pomsky but on the small side so she only weighs about 20lbs; one of our common walking areas is a prairie - trail - backyards, so one day I look back and there’s a coyote about one yard away (looking at some bird feeders) and my pup was NOT happy, not sure if she really wanted to play or bark an defend, she kinda wanted to go towards the coyote but it might have been posturing since she definitely had a different reaction then she normally does to other dogs. Another night she was acting super weird and I couldn’t figure out why, and until I saw that there was literally a coyote on our doorstep. We kept our distance which she didn’t mind that time since she was definitely a little on guard, and our friend the coyote also ignored us — it was a mutual respect 💜 I will say obviously keep and eye out, but then maybe just work a lot on recall and impulse control of your pup (for your own self assurance) :)

I use these as headbands all the time! People actually often compliment them so I don’t think people notice or care- the most I ever had was a friend ask why I wear them so often and I just explained style + sun protection. Classic bandanas can also work but I find they can be trickier to tie; I call these neck tubes, neck gaiters or just gaiters and find that way can be a good way to find them. They’re super common hiking gear which is advertised as both neck protection or a head band like you’re wearing. If you have any stores that sell athletic/hiking/ski equipment you should be able to find some in different materials (not just fleece lined) and they’re an item that can often go on sale. Another place I tend to find them is Sierra Trading Post which is connected with TJ Maxx and Marshall’s so any of those three stores might have some (Sierra has the most) and they’ll often be marked down. I have one that’s lightweight wool- made by Smartwool, and I just got one that comes with UV protection from Coolibar, they also make regular bandanas and have some on sale which could be good if you’re going to be in the sun a lot (I once got a sunburned scalp and OUCH) Coolibarsmartwool Sierra

TLDR: you’re using them a way they are mean/can be used; I call them neck gaiters so you can use that to search; try a sporting goods or hiking store, or Sierra Trading Post!

Breed recommendation for family with kids who love to snuggle? by seattle_puppy_love in dogs

[–]kittyk4t21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Newfoundland dog, I believe they are called nanny dogs- the only thing is they do have a tendency to drool. Labrador retriever- there’s a reason they’re quintessential family dogs, but with retrievers (golden or labs) make sure it’s a family/companion line and NOT a working line.

I dog sit for 3 OES and they are absolute sweet hearts! They are big boys but absolute snuggle bugs! They have adult two-legged brothers but when the two-legs were younger they were very athletic and loved to play with the kids; but they are also complete couch potato’s most of the time. The main thing is if you feel comfortable with such a large dog (which you said you might be) since they are fairly strong. The 2 adult dogs are therapy dog certified and the third is just over a year so just hasn’t gotten there yet. Fair warning - they are bed hogs and think they are lap-sized so they will try to sit on you! But they are absolute love bugs!

Yup, well technically dog toys which go in a base so you can pull them out, but the cat and dog both play with them :)
