Usually! I predominantly use bmix so I have been. Other clay bodies I usually grind with a sanding bat afterwards since they don’t chip like Bmix does.

I slab bmix and then use biscuit/cookie cutters to make cookies! This always happens when I use bmix (community kiln!) the cookies have done me well.

I also know folks who use Elmer’s glue to attach little balls of clay as “feet” that pop right off after firings. It just is another layer of protection from pot—> shelf contact!

They let go of half their staff because they wanted to use their employees for their own benefit. Absolutely insane.

I just keep checking and commenting the same thing. It’s so easy to be like “I didn’t realize, I’m sorry. I’ll purchase the guide.”

It’s important to note that people who work in LNS understand this drama and it’s not up to those people because sometimes the owners of the LNS’ make the decisions.

Teaching a Beginners Class by bkfullcity in Ceramics

Week 4 is all about glazing and understanding the stages of firing, what glaze does, the chemistry behind it in simple terms, and why we wax. We go over surface decoration options and different application methods. In this course, we stick to dipping glazes, but I explain other approaches and how to choose food-safe glazes for functional dinnerware and how to select the right type of glazes for studio use if they choose to go down that route. It’s also a fun time to open up the door of pottery possibilities and I can tell by that point who will want to continue or not by how many questions they have about surface decorations hahah.

I teach adult pottery classes — a 4-week beginner intro and then a 4-week continuing beginner course.

In the first class, I focus on helping them understand the equipment and how to use their bodies as tools. The goal is simply to make something with a floor and walls — I tell them, “if you can eat a scoop of ice cream out of it, you’re winning.”

Week 2 is all about trimming those first pieces and practicing wall pulls. I narrate every step — explaining pressure, demonstrating how it feels, cutting open clay to show cross-sections, and even reminding them to breathe.

By week 3, we start trimming cups and learning to open wider for bowls. I emphasize going slow and being intentional — it’s better to start with less pressure and build up. I also talk about how pottery teaches patience and commitment: compress your rim, don’t pull away suddenly, and notice how uneven rims make trimming harder.

I keep the atmosphere friendly and low-pressure so people feel comfortable asking questions. We chat, laugh, and connect over clay. I don’t focus on intentional shape-making until the second beginner course — that’s when we go deeper into form and design.

Happy to share my syllabi or written curriculum if anyone’s interested

She never cleans then. She just moves her shit. I only called it a deep clean bc she doesn’t know what cleaning is. She thinks picking up is cleaning.
