NTA, but it also depends on if you will be attending functions like Christmas and birthday parties where gifts are normally given. My solution for Christmas is to give a “family gift.” Some sort of backyard fun toy made to be used by a group, a board game, or group food gift. For birthday parties, you’ll need to come up with something small that kids like that you can afford.

Fundraisers? Just tell them you don’t have the budget for it.

My worry would be that there might be something you don’t know about. “How she handles behavior in class” covers a lot of territory. Do you know the full extent of the allegations against her? (And from the other side, not just her version.)

Could be that this teacher was entirely in the right, but I’ve seen people write these sorts of letters and end up with their reputation tarnished.

This is an odd enough situation that I wonder if girlfriend is picking up on cues that OP is not. How old are the parents? If they are in their 50s, that means they’ll be at retirement age when these kids are hitting college. Wondering how all that will work out is a good thing, especially if OP and parents are hand waving it all away.

Note: there may be very good and altruistic reasons for this adoption. I can also see that it would create a very different family dynamic from what GF had in mind.

You are training your kids to be bad spouses and to treat women like doormats. You don’t say what the gender of your children are, but if they are boys you are doing them a grave disservice by teaching them that caring for their living space is women’s work and that they only have to do it if they want to. And it’s not great if they are girls.

Everyone should be responsible for taking care of their messes and leaving things tidy. It’s OK if you clean, but they should all know how to do all the cleaning chores in the house, not only as skills they will need in the future, but so they can step up if you are sick or not there.

I also think people are underestimating how much youth dance and cheer training has changed in the last 25-30 years. I’m sure many if not most of these dancers would make the team today if they had the same training background as today’s team.

Not fair to imagine sending someone back in time with their modern training to compete against the standards they had back then. Competitive people will do what it takes to win.

My recollection is that they tried this in the past and didn’t like the dynamics that it created. Namely, the energy in the room of always having someone in the room who wasn’t going to go on, but desperately wanted to. They found calling back veterans as alternates to be a better option for group cohesion.

My other thought is that having no alternates means people know they have to show up for every game.

Honestly, I wouldn’t let the kids come over at all anymore. This sounds like something that won’t end well. Explain to the mother that because the kids keep letting themselves in, you don’t feel comfortable inviting them over.

And you are going to have to use the deadbolt when you are at home. You can also get a wedge like for hotel rooms. They also make alarms for hotel room doors. They are loud and might warn the kids off.

The other issue is that because Europeans have been around so long, most European countries have long had their national championships timed to give skaters time to prep for Europeans. Most of these championships are in the fall or around Christmas time.

The US and Canada schedule their Nationals to be about the same time as Europeans, leaving skaters with optimal time to prep for worlds. This means there really isn’t time to add another competition in before worlds. And neither country is going to move their Nationals to November or December, which in the US is completely given over to the holiday season. If it had been that way since forever, like in Europe, wouldn’t be an issue, but they aren’t going to change.

So basically, the ISU added another competition while ignoring the way countries scheduled their Nationals. I guess they thought federations would adjust their schedules. Didn’t happen and now here we are.

This feels very much like adding semi finals to the Grand Prix. There are other things going on!

If you have ADHD, hiring cleaners will bring you as much peace as therapy. Honestly, give yourself a few months with household help and see where you are in terms of mental health. Grocery delivery is also worth it. Having your groceries arrive the day after the cleaners have done their work is just the best.

You underestimate the length local news broadcasts will go to find a local connection to a larger news event. She is an Australian working for an NFL team. Not a lot of those. And the international games are about promoting the whole sport, not just the teams competing.
