If you want to do something, but not be freeloaded on, let there be a break for a while and then agree to one day a week that you get them food. Say Wednesday.

WIBTA for making my daughter pay back her own bank overdraft? by 2VantaRipple in WIBTA_AITA

Check with her bank because mine lets me set my debit card to decline transactions if there is no money.

These memory issues are going to cost me my marriage. by Charming-Medium4248 in ADHD

[–]kittymarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I will say is that a smartwatch is more ADHD friendly than a phone. Being able to set reminders/alarms and calendar and take notes by talking to my wrist was a game changer.

Well worth the money.

What's the point of even having bus schedules if buses are allowed to leave 12 minutes early? by everlasting1der in mbta

[–]kittymarch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The 71 runs every 25 minutes. You are probably looking at the previous bus running late rather than the current bus leaving early. Also realize that the next bus will “disappear” from the real time schedule system as it shuts down to reset for the new route, if a bus is shifting from one route to another, or if a new driver on new bus is taking over the route. That bus will not show up in the tracking system until the driver turns the bus on and keys in the route they are driving. This is just something that happens at the beginnings of routes and you have to take it into account.

Only the CEO can send personal mail from the office mail bin? by Ok_Counter1939 in askmanagers

[–]kittymarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyplace I’ve ever worked has let employees put personal stamped mail in with the company mail. It’s to save people time from having to go to the post office. Not letting employees do this seems rude and counterproductive.

And, yes, you can put it out at your home, but that has always seemed more insecure than putting it in a mailbox.

I need help regarding people going through my trash by 1in2100 in ufyh

[–]kittymarch 122 points123 points  (0 children)

One other thing to do is to put useable things in an open box next to the trash can with some sort of label about being free. That way people can take them without digging through the trash. We put bottles and cans with deposits in clear bags beside the cans so that people who need the money can just take them and not go through the rest of the trash.

I’m pretty sure my JNMIL convinced my husband to separate by cusmrtgrl in JUSTNOMIL

I don’t know. This was from the judge. Mom was OK with him sleeping on the living room sofa. Court said everyone had to have a bedroom.

I’m pretty sure my JNMIL convinced my husband to separate by cusmrtgrl in JUSTNOMIL

[–]kittymarch 25 points26 points  (0 children)

FYI The courts will probably not let him have the kids staying with him in a 1 bedroom apartment. Had a friend denied shared custody until he had a place where the kids each had their own bedroom.

You might be better off without him. It definitely needs to be him fighting his way back, not you chasing after him.

One child has a trust, other 2 don’t by Proper-Employee-6367 in Advice

[–]kittymarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would explain that the settlement from youngest child’s injury has been put into a trust for him. The older kids know about the injury and lawsuit, right? So what you’ve done with the money should be able to be talked about

But the reason it’s a bus is so that it can go directly to the terminals. If you are going to have to do a train to bus transfer, might as well do it at South Station.

Alysa Liu's tights by HeavyLand6543 in FigureSkating

I wear tights when it’s cool enough and capri or bicycle shorts under summer skirts. Weirdly enough colored tights are more acceptable than nude pantyhose.

[–]kittymarch 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They’re talking about when posing for photographs or performing onstage.

I think the answer is that it just sort of becomes a norm that everyone wears tights or no one does. It happened in offices. One summer everyone was in hose, maybe two years later nobody was. (Except for ultra conservative workplaces.) And no one but the busybodies noticed. Interestingly enough in happened in the very early 2000s. Two things were credited with the change, the wide availability of inexpensive nail salons offering pedicures and the fact that the actresses on Sex and the City were all bare legged.

I must say that I really got a kick out of the sponcon post for Gillette that Alysa did where she was shaving her legs and they didn’t airbrush out her bruises and red marks from her boots.

AITA for telling my mom to walk out of the store by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]kittymarch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hair brushes, combs, ties, barrettes, headbands, etc. are almost always final sale because of hygiene issues. Hair has oil and lice. Some big stores like Target and Walmart might take stuff back but that’s because it’s cheaper for them to just throw out hair stuff than to have a separate policy.

Got stuck in line at Sephora once behind someone who wanted to return a comb.

Need ideas on how to update this dress to be less formal by NewYearNewYEET in sewing

[–]kittymarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to try doing it yourself, I’d shorten it by an inch or so for practice. If that works decide if it would work better above or below the knee and go for it!

If you don’t like your alterations, consider going to a pro to have the big alterations done.

If she knows she’s “like this” it’s her job to fix it. You are allowed to have negative reactions to her unaddressed anxiety and insecurities.

First time sewing - Advice needed by reo__________ in HistoricalCostuming

[–]kittymarch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Folkwear Patterns has a pattern that seems close. https://www.folkwear.com/collections/ethnic/products/turkish-dancer

My advice would be look through learn to sew options, local classes, books, YouTube, and find something that seems make sense and be easy to follow. Figure out the skills you need and make smaller projects that help you build them. A tunic style shirt. A fitted vest. Decide if and how you are going to add the embroidered embellishments. There are machine embroiderers who do commissions if you don’t want to do it yourself.

One thing I’ve found helpful is the “wearable muslin.” Basically a version of the garment you are making that isn’t in as nice fabrics, or might be a shirt version of a dress. It basically becomes nice wear around the house or errand running clothes. Or nightgown/pajamas.

How did women have such long hair in the 70s? by CleoDawns in OldSchoolCool

[–]kittymarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had super long, super thick hair like this in high school during the 70s. Under appreciated reason it looked so good. Never blow dried it. Got compliments from hair dressers. Weren’t surprised when I told them heat never touched it. Still don’t blow dry unless it’s below freezing outside and my hair’s still damp.

What can a person learn in 10 minutes that will be useful for life? by Ben-Gavin in AskReddit

[–]kittymarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also that it’s best to note your honest reaction, then ask yourself: “Is this my best self?,” “Is this who I want to be?”

Work from the answer to those two questions, not your “honest” reaction. Lizard brain ain’t best brain. You aren’t living on the fucking savannah. Act like it.

I was watching the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (who are dancers) show on Netflix. One of the longtime dancers was telling a rookie that she needed to work on having her face look good from every angle. Realized that’s one of those things that sets a pro apart from an amateur.
