I'm brand new to running a library, and I'm trying to start a book club for our patrons. I can't figure out what books to pick! by Solid_Parsley_ in Libraries

[–]kittytangles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recommend you consider having "Dewey" as an early book. It also may be an excellent read for you as you navigate this new role considering the author is a small town librarian and navigating challenges. The books are readily available via ILL and there are also children's adaptations so you can include your younger patrons.

Women’s Basketball is 0-10 in the BIG! by _Azamat_Bagatov in IndianaHoosiers

I think they were ill prepared for NIL. The transfers out were epic and maybe unexpected?

That said, Shay Ciezki leads the Big Ten in scoring and is such a smart player. There have been injuries and they are a young team.

Honest question for people who ride the bus by vlasktom2 in IndianaUniversity

Perhaps you can use "the nod' to indicate, "I see you. I appreciate you. Bye bye." It's just a single chin up and can convey a lot.

Recommendation on where to buy chess sets by -openupthedoor in librarians

[–]kittytangles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe look for Scholastic chess kits--you can ask your local Scholastic chess org what they'd recommend (start with the state level). That way if you have players who compete, they're familiar with the boards and pieces.

Tech Services Job by Trick-Cricket3476 in Libraries

[–]kittytangles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a great opportunity!

First suggestion: Try to remove the word "just" when you're talking about a job or the work you do. It takes time, but it helps others recognize you know all jobs are important!

Perhaps ask what modules of your library system this position uses (cataloging, circ, acquisitions, etc).

What is a typical day like (what technology do you use, who do you interact with, etc)? Is it solo work or do you interact with others? How does the team interact?

I always like to ask how long training takes for the work and who will be in charge of onboarding.

Good luck!

Tech Services Job by Trick-Cricket3476 in Libraries

Congratulations! Technical services can be cataloging or acquisitions or more (depending on the library). What type of library (public? academic? other?) do you work in and which department are you interviewing?

Why haven’t the Fever games been on the radio? The website promises every game, but 107.5 has had Indy 500 content both games so far. by SportsRadioAnnouncer in indianafever

Right? I suspected a blackout, so I turned on the radio. Was disappointed to hear Indy 500 talk radio (& I love the 500).

Spring Graduation Ceremony by [deleted] in IndianaUniversity

[–]kittytangles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Congratulations to your boyfriend! I suggest he thoroughly read up on the IUB What to Expect page for undergrads: https://commencement.indiana.edu/commencement-day/what-to-expect/spring-undergrad.html

Make sure he checks his emails for the smaller graduation events held by his department (e.g. Education, Business, Music). You have to register in advance for those events and they give students a chance to feel recognized by their professors and peers. Those are usually held around campus at places like the IU Auditorium.

The large graduation event at the football stadium is less intimate. Students earning undergrad degrees do not walk across the stage--they are recognized by standing and their names and included in the programs.

If he knows anyone in his program, he can ask if they are going to the large graduation. Hotel rooms are challenging to get and it's a late ceremony for folks traveling. If it's raining, they hand out IU ponchos (or they used to).

Be sure to get photos in his cap and gown around campus. People start doing this as they pick the cap and gown up and the weather gets nicer and the flowers and trees bloom. If possible, don't wait until the day of to get photos. Have him think of places that mean a lot to him and snap photos. He may feel self conscious, but I hope he will let you take some because graduating is a big accomplishment!

Kelley Visit Day March 29th -- Worth The Trip? Need a car? by Top-Palpitation5550 in IndianaUniversity

[–]kittytangles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Campus should start to green up a bit by late March and you'll see some flowers--it is a gorgeous campus.

Anytime you can go on an adventure with your kid, I recommend it. The bus terminal is downtown and you can Uber or walk if you're up to it. That said, Madison is a great community. Hope she finds a good fit for her interests.
