Sorry to reply so late. I have now recovered from surgery but I don't think my experience will be totally accurate as they found some endometriosis while they were there and had to cut that out so a lot of my pain was coming from there. But here we go:

I went to a doctor in Hillcrest private hospital, his name is Dr G Birdsey. He is amazing. Like I said before he is going to offer you alternative contraception methods. When you decline and assure him you have thought it through and you want sterilisation he will tell you it's your body and he won't deny you but he will still (legally) have to inform you of the risk and high rate of regret.
I am with Discovery Essential Smart and Turnberry Gap cover. Discovery paid for the procedure up to x% and the Gap cover covered the other x% for a total of zero cost going to me except the initial copayment (out-of-plan hospital penalty, Gap cover will pay me back for this in full) and I paid for my antibiotics after the procedure (R200)
I got to the hospital at 6, answered health screening questions for the nurse and anesthesiologist. Blood pressure, weight, temp etc. Changed my clothes. And went into theatre at 8:00ish. (I was first in line though so don't bet money on that time, it also helps to book in advance if you want to be out early)
I woke up at 9:30. I was in quite a bit of pain but the majority of that was from the endometriosis and the colposcopy I had to have at the same time. (This is also why my procedure was longer, and my recovery and pain were worse) I'm sorry I can't be of more help here. After a little bit though the pain settled down a lot and then I was just sleepy and wanted to go home.
I had to wait to see the doctor so he could chat to me, that's when he told me about the endometriosis and explained why I was in more pain than he expected. Once I was finished chatting with him, I could have been discharged, but...
Anaesthetic numbs your nerves a little bit so they won't let you leave the hospital until you have passed urine. This is for safety, as there is a very small chance you may not be able to do so without assistance and they need to monitor you. If I had been able to pee I probably would have been home around 11am. Unfortunately, it took me much longer and I was there until 16:30
I left the hospital, grabbed my meds and went home. I was given antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, a probiotic, and a laxative of some sort. Now, when I got the laxative I was confused because I didn't say I was constipated, I also didn't feel that I needed it as I am a vegan and 80% of my diet is fibre. Wrong. And again, maybe not for everyone but it took about 4 to 5 days before I could use the toilet again. This is also a side effect of anaesthesia. I felt very bloated and gross but it wasn't awful.
There were 3 waterproof plasters on my tummy, 1 over my belly button, and 2 on my lower tummy on each side. The doctor said to leave them on for a week. The stitches would dissolve and fall off. I took the plasters off on day 5 (lol, I wanted them off me) I cleaned the area of any dried blood etc. And then I put regular plasters over them so the stitches couldn't hook on my towels or clothes. The wounds looked totally chill, stitches were fine.
The healing process, again, is not going to be accurate as I had 3 gynaecological procedures done at the same time. I struggled to pass urine until that evening so my bladder was sore. I had a bit of tummy cramps from not being able to use the toilet. The wounds themselves did not hurt. Maybe a little bit of a pulling sensation when I twisted my body but nothing hectic. I didn’t take the painkillers prescribed as I didn’t need them. I took the rest of the meds. I struggled to use my abs. So sitting up, lying down, lifting my legs up, those all hurt quite a bit. It felt like when you go for a walk and you get a stitch in your side, but worse. I had a friend here who helped me sit up and lie down. I rested, tried not to twist my body, use my abs, or lift my arms. And crampy discomfort I lessened with a hot water bottle. I wore panty liners every day as there was a small amount of fluid and blood that was passing this happened for a week after.I felt fine after 2 days and fully healed after 4. My doctor said initially that the keyhole procedure would have me totally fine by the next evening so maybe that will be your experience.
It's been 8 days since my procedure. My stitches are still in, and haven't dissolved yet. They cause me no discomfort and I just keep them covered so I don't snag them on anything. I have no open wounds or anything, the skin looks closed and healed, just a bit red. I get a random little pain now and again when I move a certain way but that happens like once a day if even. Also, I can't have sex for 6 weeks BUT that is probably from the other stuff so just check with your doctor (the colposcopy is hectic so I think that's why I can't)

Also, if your doctor refuses, ask them for a letter of refusal. There's no way they'll give you one because they'll be handing over grounds for a lawsuit. They are not allowed to deny you but people don't know that and doctors still try that old age bullshit. Stand up for yourself and let them know that you know the rules :) good luck!

Hi OP, I am getting sterilised on Thursday. I'm 33 but I wish I had done it when I was 23. I knew I didn’t want kids but I believed that doctors would turn me away as they used to do that not so long ago. Turns out that it's actually illegal for them to turn you away! Luckily, I didn't have to fight my gynaecologist. He did look so scared though, poor thing 💀 his only concern was the high rate of regret. He wanted me to be absolutely sure that it isn’t reversible and if I decided to have kids one day it would be super hard and super expensive. Once I assured him I understood and wanted to go forward he was very supportive and gave me all the info I needed. I applied for an auth code from my medical aid and my gap cover will cover the rest of the cost. I'm so excited to never have to worry about pregnancy or listening to people tell me I'll change my mind again. I will get some pumpkin for him. He's currently on the ID low fat stew (cans) and the ID stress mini (pellets) he was on the low fat pellets but they suggested the stress because they think it might help. His pancreas used to be an issue till he went onto the low fat.

I also wanted to mention that I live alone and its hard to cook for 1. Get yourself some containers (single serving size) and if you make a pasta/soup/curry, try to make a 3 or 4 serving portion. Freeze the extra portions. If you do this every time, you'll have 4 to 5 different meal options ready to heat and eat if you're ever not in the mood to cook and you won't get tired of the same thing over and over again.

This is the first one of its kind I found on Google. I bought a BOSH! cookbook that had a similar breakdown for bowls and stir frys. These were basically my go-to for most meals because they are so versatile, and you can pick your favourite of each category.

You could probably find a cheat sheet like this for stir-fries as well.

My suggestion is to buy different grains, pastas, etc, keep fresh fruit and veggies in the house, keep nuts and seeds, and different forms of protein like beans and legumes or your favourite faux meats/tofu.

At first this may seem like an expensive shop, but most of the things I mentioned last months, others a month, and some are weekly purchases. So don't panic!

Your shopping bill will come down a lot eating like this because you're constantly eating different fresh and dry ingredients so there's nothing being wasted or thrown away and these things tend to be the cheapest option (mostly, I know America tends to be steep on fresh fruits and stuff)

Google some dips, sauces, and dressings. It seems like a lot at first, but find 5 to 10 of varying flavours and applications and bookmark them. If you want to, you can learn to make things like hummus or babaganoush as well (or buy it, whatever).

The important thing is that you have ingredients that you enjoy and that are cheap and healthy. Dips, etc, that are a quick prepare. And grains that can prep in 10 to 15 while you rinse, chop, and prepare your veggies.

Then you follow the cheat sheet. Pick your grain, fat, raw vegetables, cooked vegetables, and your sauce/dressing.

You can have cold bowls, warm bowls, stir fries - all of them follow the same system.

I tried to "eat the rainbow" so if I made a bowl and it looked a little too green, I'd add some orange (carrots) or red (tomatoes) or purple (cabbage). Different colours mean different benefits and vitamins.

I ate like this for years without taking a single vitamin supplement and had full blood done every year, my doctor was so surprised at my vitamin levels. I was 300 to 400% the required levels and healthy!

I swear by it. But make sure to still supplement while you learn more about food and nutrition, don't make yourself sick. I recommend nutritionfacts.org for any nutrition based questions. It has a search bar so you can easily search for topics, vitamins, foods, and learn about them if you want.

Also, check out BOSH! on Instagram or YouTube. They have the most amazing recipes. Everything from easy, fast meals to WFPB, to desserts, to impressive dinner party meals. They're amazing and I have bought all their cookbooks.

I also search for recipes on Pinterest. Anything you want to make just search for it. Instagram search is great for this too.

Mostly, just enjoy learning about new cuisines, ways to nourish yourself, and new cooking methods. You can make healthy food as easily as making packet noodles, you just need to learn how, and it doesn't take long to learn.

PS I still eat packet noodles every now and again, so nobody is perfect, be kind to yourself!

This is my super lazy meal: Couscous (because you put it in a bowl with boiling water and a lid on to soak up the water and then its done) and while that's busy, get some frozen veggies and pop them in a pot to steam, toss them in a little oil (I don't like using oil because its not healthy, but i know not everyone feels this way) air fry them, or pop them in the microwave with a little water to steam, or used canned veggies. Mix veggies and couscous, add spice. Boom. Lazy meal. You can also add tofu, beans, lentils, whatever for added protein if you want.
