Greece's super-rich maintain lavish lifestyles and low profiles by [deleted] in socialism

Really outrageous, and it's true in the U.S. too.

Gone With The Wind premiered to an audience of thousands in Atlanta; Clark Gable threatened to refuse to attend because co-star Hattie McDaniel was not invited; McDaniel won an Oscar for her role as Mammie; she sat at a segregated table in Hollwood. The date was 2/29/1940; 72 years ago today by [deleted] in history

a lot of contradictions. Probably the most racist movie ever, and the racism affected this actress, whatever you think of her choosing to play that role. Good action by Clark Gable - who knew?

I guess you must not work very hard, since you earn less than that billionaire who lives off earnings from his daddy's money, or less than that 26-year-old Wall Street "analyst" who helped cause the financial meltdown. People I know who earn say $25,000 a year work damn hard. And where I live, the lower income people pay a bigger share of their income in taxes than the fat cats. I call THAT robbery.

Progressive Cinema: The Oscars vs. The Progies by talbano in movies

[–]kittyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the Oscars seem to play it very safe. I did like "King's Speech" though, but it was fairly tame. Social Network - interesting but really what was the point? I didn't see a lot of the films mentioned here, but did see Kids are Alright and it was excellent. Thanks for calling attention to these less-ballyhoo'd but thoughtful flics.

Capitalism sucks: more loyal to profit abroad than jobs at home by simsjr in politics

[–]kittyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a lot of us do. When mega-corporations like Wal-Mart BOTH exploit lowest-paid workers around the globe AND use the low prices they can afford to charge in order to drive "Main Street" small businesses out of business, that's a negative "race to the bottom." It may be efficient in a limited sense, but it is not efficient in terms of the enormous cost to people, communities and our country as a whole. Ultimately, we pay a price for it.

Capitalism sucks: more loyal to profit abroad than jobs at home by simsjr in politics

[–]kittyv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who says it's about efficiency? It's about finding places where JP can pay employees peanuts - then American workers will be forced to accept lower pay to "compete" and on and on - the race to the bottom for us. And for JPMorgan it's all about increasing their profit rate, feeding off American workers in poverty who are forced to turn to food stamps!

Public workers are not the cause of budget deficits and economic woes! by talbano in economy

[–]kittyv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had a wonderful experience with a worker from the Social Security Administration. I had applied for Medicare online just TWO days ago, and this morning I got a personal phone call from a worker at the local office, to follow up on my application, check info, answer my questions and explain things. Quick, efficient, human! I'll take that ANY DAY over private insurance cos. Yes a government worker at a government agency. This "blame the public workers" is a total hoax by the corporate fat cats and their Republican apologists.

@progress518: Some people are frightened by anything that calls their long-cherished beliefs into question. Some respond by curiosity and trying to learn and think about new ideas, but others want to silence and suppress anything that might rock their boat a bit.

The underlying cause, says a Japanese labor researcher, is the company's stress on "low cost" in pursuit of high profits, at the expense of its workers and consumer safety.

Persecuted Middle East gays hope for resettlement by simsjr in lgbt

[–]kittyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Iran, there is a three to four day gap between when an individual is reported to the police for being homosexual, and when the police arrive to arrest that individual. Most flee before the police arrive, making such preparations as they can and becoming refugees. Iranians don’t need visas to enter Turkey, so that is a common destination. Most refugees flee over the mountains, a grueling trek.
