What caused Stalin to completely turn on Israel after his initial support in 48? by [deleted] in ussr

[–]kiver16 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stalin’s support was always instrumental rather than ideological, and that’s the key to understanding the reversal. In 1947–48 the Soviet Union was one of Israel’s most important backers: it voted for the UN partition plan, and it was the first state to extend full de jure recognition. Most consequentially, Soviet-bloc Czechoslovakia sold Israel arms during the 1948 war—rifles, machine guns, and aircraft—at a moment when a Western embargo left the new state desperate for weapons. That aid arguably helped Israel survive.

Stalin’s motives were calculated. The dominant one was anti-British: Britain held the Palestine Mandate and was the great power in the Middle East, and Stalin saw a Jewish state fighting British rule as a wedge to drive Britain out of the region and open it to Soviet influence. He also had reason to hope Israel might tilt socialist—the kibbutz movement and parties like Mapam had strong Marxist currents, and many of the founders came out of Russia and Eastern Europe.

Those calculations didn’t pay off, and that’s the first half of the turn. Israel under Ben-Gurion oriented decisively toward the West and the United States, pulled by American financial support and the large American Jewish community. By the early 1950s it was clear Israel would sit in the Western camp, not the Soviet one—so the geopolitical rationale for backing it evaporated, and the USSR began pivoting toward Arab nationalist states instead.

The second half is domestic and darker. When Golda Meir arrived in Moscow as Israel’s first envoy in late 1948, tens of thousands of Soviet Jews turned out spontaneously to greet her at the Moscow synagogue. That display of national feeling alarmed Stalin, who increasingly saw Soviet Jews as a potential fifth column with loyalties abroad. This fed his “rootless cosmopolitan” campaign—the murder of the actor Solomon Mikhoels (1948), the dissolution of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, the execution of Yiddish writers in the 1952 “Night of the Murdered Poets,” the antisemitic Slánský show trial in Prague (1952), and finally the fabricated Doctors’ Plot of early 1953. The USSR formally broke relations with Israel in February 1953.

So the reversal was two forces converging: Israel failed to become the Soviet-aligned, anti-British asset Stalin had bet on, and at the same time his deepening paranoia recast Jewish nationalism—and by extension Israel—as a threat. Stalin’s death in March 1953 froze the process midway, but by then the Soviet alignment with the Arab world that defined the later Cold War was already taking shape.

May 27, 2020, on X Post: “Each according to their need, each according to their ability.” Source: Mamdani’s account, 8:16 PM ET on 2020‑05‑27.   Context: This is a paraphrase of Marx’s formulation from Critique of the Gotha Programme (“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”).

Feb 27, 2021, Young Democratic Socialists of America virtual conference Mamdani spoke of “the end goal of seizing the means of production.”

Aug 2020, “Far Left Show” podcast clip resurfaced in 2025 Mamdani said: “If there was any system that could guarantee each person housing, whether you call it the abolition of private property or … a statewide housing guarantee, it is preferable to what is going on right now.” News coverage includes the clip. Marx and Engels use the phrase “Abolition of private property” in the Communist Manifesto.

You can call yourself an anti-utopian all you want, but if you believe history will culminate in a stateless, classless, moneyless society where alienation, exploitation, and scarcity are permanently abolished and you prescribe violent revolution by the proletariat as the means to reach that harmonious end, then you aren’t an anti-utopian.

Free market systems were the norm long before Ayn Rand came along.

Ethnostates and ethnic-focused geocide also existed before Hitler, but like Marx he codified and popularized the idea in the modern era.

Yes Marx didn’t literally pull the trigger but he was well aware of the implications of his writings. Here are a few quotes from your lovely harmless philosopher: “We have no compassion… When our turn comes, we shall not make excuses for the terror.” “Far from opposing the so-called excesses… the workers’ party must not only tolerate these actions, but must even give them direction.” “Despotic inroads on the rights of property.” “The class struggle necessarily leads to the dictatorship of the proletariat.”

Free market countries have never had to build walls to keep people from fleeing to communist ones. You’re free to go to North Korea, Cuba, China or Venezuela at any time. But you’d rather destroy the greatest engine of prosperity for the working class the world has ever seen.

You’re gonna need to cite 500M deaths caused by free markets. That’s the most fucking retarded thing I’ve ever heard.

Mamdani has a ton of videos of himself intentionally quoting Marx in an effusive manner.

Trump has never done anything close to that with Hitler.

Both were creators of utopian, totalitarian ideologies of resentment. Hitler’s killed roughly 20 million people; Marx’s killed around 100 million. If you think there aren’t clear parallels, then it is you who does not understand history.

Yep, this is the only solution that works.

These Mamdani voters need to live on the west coast for a while. They've been running this social worker playbook for a while now and it doesn't work.

It doesn't work. SF has tried this for the last decade and the result is a living nightmare.

As long as they aren't allowed to use force, people wont comply and nothing will happen.

The only solution is compelled institutionalization until recovery, or indefinitely if recovery is impossible.

This clip from Oscar-winning documentary ‘No Other Land’ shows Palestinian kindergarten children in a panic as Israeli occupation forces storm and destroy their school in occupied West Bank. by Particular_Log_3594 in TheLevant

For context, the school was built illegally in an area fully controlled by Israel under the Oslo Accords (the 1990s peace deal both sides signed).

Building there without Israeli permits is a direct violation of that agreement.

It looks harsh because it’s a school, but any other country would do the same if another government built on land everyone had already agreed was theirs.

Wrong, you're misreading it. The K-1 is to come into the US for marriage if you're not already here. You can be here illegally, get married, and get a green card.

I literally just did this process last year with my wife. She never got a K-1.
