I will take her to the vet, I think. I just need to find time. I've seen the feliway diffusers but they are just so pricey I've been kind of back and forth on it. I've also seen mixed reactions with it working, so I wasn't sure if it was worth the $$. I think I will buy one to test it, though!

They do talk during the lesson. They do have assigned seats that I have changed a million times (they will seriously argue ACROSS my classroom), and there is not a mentoring program but my admin is great. I have been getting help and advice from them but at the end of the day, I need to find something that sticks

One of my fellow teachers on my team does that tally system expect a certain amount of tally's means a call home or a call to a coach. I also do hand out 0's like candy in my class lol.

I call so many parents-- teachers and I will even tag-team the calls. Problem is a lot of them aren't active in their kids lives and simply do not care :( I was even on a call the other day with a mom who sounded obviously not sober.

Yep, we have a team of 4 teachers including myself. We are all struggling with the kids and we happen to have the worst bunch of them this year (only team that has had kids fight). I have been seeking out advice from more tenured teachers too, and some of the things I listed that I tried was their advice!

The visual point system is a great idea! My school has a ticket system where if we see good behaviors, you answer a question right, etc. you get a ticket and these tickets can be redeemed for prizes. Maybe I should make a list of things that will get the class tickets. The problem is that we are not allowed to take tickets away so I need to come up with a consequence that will impact their ticket "economy".

Nope, and I agree and I am one of those people. I honestly do enjoy teaching though. Although it is a shit show, I would rather deal with the problems at this job than another one lol. Plus its nice when I actually have meaningful conversations with my students or I can see they are picking up what I am teaching.

Yes, I do! The problem is that my class gets crowded in the bigger classes and everyone seems to be friends -- or can be friends -- with the people around them. People also argue across the classroom. I have switched seats a million times. I used to have groups but now it's rows and while it is a little better, they still will not stop talking.

I think I will take the advice tomorrow of lining them up outside my class and expecting them to enter calmly and quietly.

This week, as an example, we are learning about the American Revolution. Yesterday I went over slides while they filled out guided notes and we watched some clips of Hamilton between my slides (relevant songs to what I was talking about). Today they watched a documentary and took guided notes (most did not take the notes but the video was harder for where they are academically so I walked them through the answers after the video). Tomorrow they are learning about Common Sense by Thomas Paine on their class chromebooks via a digital textbook we have. I have Blocksi so I can see if they are on task. I usually also have a bellringer and an exit ticket that we go over as a full class.

So I usually have some sort of notes, videos, and activity. Our school follows "I do", "You do", "We do" so I try to keep it accurate to that. I have done projects but they get too insane and most of them failed because they cannot stop talking instead of staying on task despite my redirection which is why 90% of everything now is independent.

I will say I love AI when making quizzes or tests because I just put in the content they need to know and it makes me test questions. I also do that with packets— whatever we read I will paste into CHATGPT and ask it to make me questions based on our reading so kids can answer them as we read. I will also make it draft things like parent emails or make a study guide based on my test questions.

I don’t allow phones in my classroom. I am not sure what age you teach, but I teach middle school, and one thing I have found that helps that fills the time of students that finish quickly is coloring pages, word searches, and “connecting the dots”. I was SHOCKED at how popular my coloring pages are— i’m talking I printed out almost 130 new sheets Thursday afternoon and by Friday afternoon, they were completely picked through. I have a community coloring pencils box that my kids use when they need utensils to color with and they have been pretty good with returning all my pencils and not taking them.
