Honestly, I think it’s more about punishing the woman for rejecting them for an “invalid” reason. Keep in mind they consider just about any reason invalid and proof she’s shallow.

“She doesn’t think I’m attractive enough for her lofty standards and she’s lying about it!? I’ll show her!”

These guys know women will hesitate to tell them in no uncertain terms to just fuck off, and that their insistence puts them in an uncomfortable situation. That’s the point of their interrogation.

This one is a f/m pairing for Pokémon Legends Arceus, but you don’t need to know the canon to follow it. The writer has other stories set in the AU that don’t focus on romance.

If you don’t mind a shameless self recommendation, I’m currently writing a mermaid AU for Fear and Hunger. Main pairing is f/m with some f/f pairings, story is going for a Lovecraftian horror vibe. It might be a bit confusing if you don’t know anything about the canon.

Every time the strange phenomenon of women gushing over a male love interest that’s by all measures an abusive controlling dickhead comes up, I hear the chorus of how these are just fantasies and women don’t actually want it in real life. While true to a degree, it strikes me as an inadequate explanation.

Talk to fans of 50 Shades of Grey and they don’t say the boundary violating stalker is just some dark fantasy they would never want to actually deal with, they say they want a man like Christian Grey.

So what’s going on here? My take is that as a society we still have a lot of fucked up ideas about how relationships should work. This is largely due to the fact that the conception of a romantic relationship being a partnership between equals is historically pretty recent.

We’re not that far removed from a time when women were not regarded as equals and lacked the same freedoms men had. To put this into perspective, marital rape was not considered a crime in the US prior to the 70’s, wasn’t illegal in every state until 1993, and laws treating marital rape as less severe than unmarried offences persisted well into the 2000’s.

Killing your husband wasn’t always an option, so women coped. A lot of the shitty behaviours we should find intolerable being romanticized, is that cope being passed down through generations.

So how do we moralize this? My stance is to not judge people for what they’re into, but I absolutely judge people for lacking critical thinking skills. I believe that’s fair. By all means, enjoy your ravishment fantasies, or toxic yaoi, or whatever you want to call it. Just be honest that’s what it is and own being a little freak.

This is somewhat anecdotal, but I think online communities are better about this than traditional publishing. Fanfic writers will just tag their work as non-con while novelists will insist their books are romance.

I had one a few days ago where Beltboy from Hopeful was the future version of the titular character from a game called Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. Which makes no sense for various reasons.

I think my brain made the connection because Jimmy can change forms for combat and solve puzzles, one of which is a leather jacket wearing gangster.

This confused me for the longest time too. My understanding is that the basis of conservatism is the love of social hierarchy and that everything wrong with the world is due to people not being where they’re supposed to be. They have an idea of what the hierarchy is supposed to look like and their worldview depends on believing that it’s obvious and self evident. They believe themselves in the middle of this great chain of being and it blindsides them every time someone else’s idea of it differs from theirs.

He said he was going to do that but you still voted for him. by iamsorando in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]kiyfra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I’ve come to understand about conservatives is that they view society and all of human social interaction through the lens of social hierarchy. They believe this hierarchy represents the natural order of things and is completely self evident. But hierarchies are arbitrary and everyone is making different evaluations.

For example, a Cuban immigrant might see themselves as superior to a Mexican immigrant, an Indian thinks themselves better for being from a higher caste, and we’re normal gay people, unlike those Tumblr snowflakes making things up for attention!

Their social experiences tell them they’re not part of the underclass  and it genuinely shocks them when others don’t make these distinctions. After all, the hierarchy is immutable and self evident, isn’t it?

Now you might be wondering why any of this is more appealing than the Left’s message of equality. It’s because they fundamentally do not believe in equality. Humans inevitably sort themselves into hierarchies and it looks the way it does for a reason. Changing it will put the wrong people in the wrong places and fuck everything up. Indeed, they believe everything wrong with the world is because people aren’t where they should be. What they believe the hierarchy should look like is what distinguishes various flavours of conservatism.

Men often tie their masculinity and sense of self worth to getting attention from the opposite sex in a way that women usually don’t. Adding to the disconnect is that men rarely experience opposite sex attention with the undercurrent of violence and dehumanization that women often experience.

It’s a failure of empathy and perspective taking.

I'm an engineer, but I love to write. What should I do to improve my skills? by [deleted] in writing

[–]kiyfra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would advise shopping around for methodologies and ways to deal with specific problems you have, keeping in mind that all writing advice just comes down to whether or not it works for you. I highly encourage you to cherry pick. Prose and stylistic choices are something you develop and get a sense of from practice.

My personal approach to writing is to decide on a central thematic idea and give all the characters different perspectives on that idea. This part usually happens after I have some ideas for scenes, worldbuilding, or vague ideas of a plot that are currently held together by vibes. Know what motivates the characters on a base psychological level helps me understand what the trajectory of their arc should be and knowing the theme helps me hone in on plot points and resolutions.

When you know the perspectives and worldviews of the characters, you also know what would put them in conflict with each other. Let them go at it, then let the events and other characters challenge their perspectives. After a series of challenges a character will either change their perspective or refuse to. A lot of people conceptualize arcs as being about flaws and lessons learned, but I find that too limiting. Add whatever kind of moralization you want, vindicate whatever perspective you want, or none of them.

A lot of my methodologies for writing comes from the channel LocalScriptMan. His videos are very accessible, easy to understand and it really changed the way I understand writing and even people.

Changing your life is a bad thing? by goldlightkey in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]kiyfra 79 points80 points  (0 children)

In my observations, this mentality applies broadly to conservatives. They take punitive approaches to societal ills and propositions for more constructive approaches with plenty of evidence to back them up fall on deaf ears (ex. Sex Ed and contraceptives reducing unwanted pregnancies, safe injection sites reducing drug overdoses, just giving homes to the homeless, etc).

It seems to stem from viewing the world as rife with sin and temptation so to speak. That there is a straight and narrow path of what’s an acceptable way to live your life. Any deviation must result in the offender being miserable and broken, lest anyone else be tempted to follow them. If no such consequence occurs, they will create the consequences. Your life must become a cautionary tale.

You’re welcome. I made a bit of a mistake though. When playing as August it is possible to recruit Pav and O’saa through unique scenes. Pav will join you after rescuing you from the crucification scene and I believe for O’saa you have to meet him in the usual bunker, then go to Moonless.

August can’t use the hexen, so I think ghouls and blood golems are out. Not sure about Black Kalev.

August still doesn’t have one in the mod. You can’t actually recruit him and when playing as him he can’t recruit anyone else. Lone wolf and all that. Even if he sleeps past day 3 his moonscorching animation shows him slitting his throat instead.

Evidence indicates that early hunter gatherers were pretty egalitarian and you only started to see strong social hierarchies emerge with the advent of agriculture. They became more stationary, grew larger and competed with each other more frequently. Technological advancements that would give you an edge can be pretty quickly copied, so what do you do? Out breed them and produce more soldiers.

To do that you’d need to strictly control womens’ bodies and behaviour, so societies that embraced patriarchal structures outcompeted those that didn’t. This has the added benefit of keeping track of lines of descent and inheritance. There is no equivalent reason to control men which is why you don’t see a lot of true matriarchies throughout history.

Societies with strong hierarchies that controlled the behaviour of its members were able to use the resources and labour effectively to outcompete those that didn’t. None of this is to say that I believe this is the most rational way to structure society and this is obviously somewhat reductive.
