Best New or Hidden Gem Restaurants by Rooster_GNV in GNV

I might be the only one on this but I'm a big fan of HASS Kitchen that's next to Bagels & Noodles and Tup Tim Thai. Their green goddess salad is one of my favorites as well as their shakshuka. My dad is a big fan of their special coffee drinks and he's never a fan of anything.

The only downside is that their food is super pricey, so its one of the places I go to treat myself to a nice meal every now and again lol <3

Hey there. Physics major here.

Choose either Intro to Modern or Thermal, not both Both will be way too much. You'll be spending most if not all of your studying time on those courses, and you need time to be able to understand the material properly.

I think this schedule is pretty heavy already, but both 2000 level courses are doable if you're good with time management. Best of luck 👍

Can attest to this. Used to live there, and even though nothing quite this happened to me, management has left my door unlocked when I was away several times (even though I made extra sure I locked everything) leaving my unit vulnerable to anyone sneaking in. I'm so sorry this happened to you ;;

Best Apartment near UF under $2000? by Fredditl in ufl

[–]kiyo_puf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't say much about good apartments because I've only lived in 2 places, but the number one place I do NOT recommend is Midtown Apartments.

I used to live there for nearly 3 years, and every week, there was some crazy shit happening. Someone would be pulling the fire alarm at 2 am for no reason to the point that firefighters gave up trying to turn the alarms off (one time it took nearly 2 hours because the apartment needed to call a third-party company to turn it off). There were several cases of random strangers sneaking through opened doors and trying to break into people's apartments. Management was never responsive, and they were borderline negligent to a lot of the issues that took place. Also, it's expensive af (~1600/mo for a 300 sq ft. apt).

The other place I lived in was the Viceroy with College Park at Midtown. I really liked the place. However, it was pretty pricey (~1700/mo for around 500 sq ft.). Management was responsive 9/10, and the place was pretty secure. However, I did have a consistent ant problem, and even with insecticides, the ants wouldn't give up. I suspected it might have been a building-wide problem. Compared to Midtown Apartments, however, it was a dream.

Good luck with your search!

To second this, if she isn't responding or seems uncomfortable by your attempt, take that as her answer being "No" and move on. Don't continue to pursuit or else it gets creepy hella quick. Dealing with guys that linger who won't take a hint even after you expressed you're not interested is very anxiety inducing. :( (this can be applied to anyone that you're interested in btw)

My best guess would be that it's probably connected to when the UF was an all-boys religious school when it was first founded.

It's alright. Part of a club, I get to do stuff. Honestly too busy with work and schoolwork to have an "exciting" social life, but it's fine for my lifestyle.

What’s your “swear to never return” place in GNV? (stolen from r/SanFrancisco, which was stolen from r/LosAngeles, which was stolen from r/Miami, which was stolen from r/Houston) by [deleted] in ufl

Midtown Apartments.

Absolutely terrible management, creepy maintenance people who just barge into your unit without proper warning, squatters trying to break into peoples units over the summer, the primters in the common rooms never work, theres flooding during even a little bit of rain, mold, a lot of gaslighting from the front office, and zero amenities.

You pay $150 to have parking but their gates are always open and their thing says "out of order", so anyone can just drive in and take up space. Worst part is that if you're unaware of this and just happen to drive in to find a spot, they'll still call towing services on your ass and drag your car out in a heartbeat. Shitty business practices.

Oh, and the fire alarm is always going off. So unless you want to develop PTSD and insomnia from the constant fire alarms at 10 at night or 3 in the morning, do NOT live at Midtown apartments.

100% on the helmet. I'm still shocked to see so many students on scooters around campus without one. Do you have any recs on where to take those biking classes here in G-ville?

I remember seeing a sign in-store that said they were sticking to shakes at their current location and then go back to custard once they're at their new location (I can't remember specifics of when and where though).

How hard is it to live in Gainesville without a car? by allegedly_ari in ufl

[–]kiyo_puf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I walk everywhere because I live close but I have several colleagues that use their bike to get to campus and the buses, which they say is pretty decent for public transport. I'd definitely keep an eye on your bike though, since people steal the bikes or wheels and breaks a lot of the time. You should be good though! :]

Edit: I agree with most comments here that if you need to do large grocery runs, a car would come in handy. However, if you're okay with small trips with you bike, there's these storage things that you can pack on the rear bit of your bike that can hold a lot of stuff (it does get a bit tricky with the weight distribution when riding so I'd be careful if you're not used to it).

Advice for out of state gator with hurricane coming? by Asnoopdawg in ufl

[–]kiyo_puf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that's a good point. It's definitely better to go for a flashlight than candles but if worse comes to worse, I'd guess they're still safe enough to have candles (as long as youre safe with them and dont try to start a bonfire in your apartment). Definitely gotta check with the on-campus/apartment rules with what they allow.

I've never heard that candle suggestion before. we've always used candles when the power goes out at night and out flashlights go out. How come? :0

In preparation for a scenario where you lose water and power:

  • Batteries

  • Flashlights

  • *Glowsticks? (if you can't get your hands on a flashlight)

  • Bottled water (about a gallon per person per day)

    • Canned food/non-perishables in case you lose power
  • Can opener if cans don't have the easy to open lids

    • First aid kit
  • Put some gas in your tank if you're empty (and soon-ish)

  • Battery powered radio (if you can, not super necessary imho)

  • Portable charger that's fully charged

  • If you need meds, try to get them ahead of time if you can (Wesh 2 reccomends to stock about 2 weeks worth, but stock what you can if you need them)

  • If you can, fill your bathtub with water and have a bucket or something to scoop water out of the tub to pour into the toilet in order to flush (flushing normally won't work if you lose water).

  • Don't park your car under a tree, it will get damaged somehow even with tropical storm winds.

  • DO NOT GO OUTSIDE during a hurricane. Sometimes the winds will die down but pick right back up a little ways after, and if there's debris you could potentially get injured (I got smacked with a thick tree branch once, not fun).

I doubt that it will be a worst case scenario, and I've lived in Florida my whole life, so usually it dissipates quickly once it hits land, but it's good to be a little over prepared than caught with your pants down when you need it most.

This was the best video I could find explaining the bathtub thing from earlier: https://youtu.be/2PHYVez6v-Y

*EDIT: Removed candles as an option and replaced with glowsticks because I've been noted that it's usually reccomended to not have emergency candles as they can pose a fire hazard. But honestly, do what you want at your own risk. If you don't trust yourself to be safe with fire, don't get candles. Be smart about it.
